I just bought 2 spiderback chairs. But how can I tell who they were made by? They seem to be an offshoot of the Hepplewhite design.

Lennox is definitely a product of his environment and upbringing. Could you imagine if he have been brought up with his birth parents he’d of been a cracked dealer pimp in some slum in the East End being brought up by white people he’s an antique dealer in Kent with style and sophistication.

I’d like to send you a picture of what I believe to be an arts & crafts coal scuttle, but in a similar form as these wine coolers. Mine has a metal liner and a copper lid.

I learnt yesterday how wood inlay was done in the 18 th century using a knife and hammer to cut the shape into the base piece and then taking out the appropriate piece and replacing it with a different wood. Some of the pieces were 'shaded' using hot sand and some were scibed and coloured, fascinating to watch. I had often wondered how it was done, now I know and it does affect the way we see these pieces of furniture.

Should be worthwhile having the metal pieces redone. You could even do them yourself with silicone mold and low heat metal casting or resin then gilded and aged. Just for the harmony, not to trick anyone.

Two years ago walking through Paris I saw some homeless people selling stuff on the pavement and amongst the stuff was a pile of gilt ormlu decor from a chest of drawers. The man said that he found the chest in the street one night and not being able to take it he pulled all the decor of it ! I shuddered to imagine what he had done. I bought the lot along with an 18 th century double compartment tea caddy missing one foot, eacy to make.

My best friend used to buy miniature chests of drawers from a dealer in Portobello. He didn't sell them but made them from old timber and detailing and made them generally to order but only to people he liked. After I met him he decided to make me one as a gift much to the chagrin of my friend who had been buying hers ! I treasure it, it is not an antique but simply a well made piece from a lovely man who has since left this earth.

Hobbs got away for years selling fakes and cobbled pieces in the face of 'experts' ! The last person I would feel sorry for is a dealer, I have been around them for years.

Who could I contact for ideas as to who made a large 19th C Arts & Crafts style buffet that I own?

Some years ago I bought at auction an oak Arts & Crafts cellarette probably late 19th or very early 20th Century, when A&C was popular in the US. It was in the original finish with cast brass hinges and lock hasps. There was a hinged lid and a hinged door. It was slotted for air movement. I searched on line for another example, but could find none. I put it in my shop for a couple of thousand dollars as I recall and it sold to a woman who lived 3,000 miles away on the east coast of the US.

I purchased a prized Song bowl from Susan Ollemans at Olympia . Such a lovely memory. Dries Blitz pointed it out and it is still today, a most cherished piece and memory. Good luck to this fair!

I love the plate bucket. What is the purpose of the two outer buckets? I have an oak bucket with liner, pierced carvings through to the liner, handles on two sides and brass domed lid. Late 19th C is my guess.

Hmm, I’ve got an oak craftsman style “coal scuttle” (at least that’s what I think it is. It has a copper domed lid and zinc (I think) liner similar to these pieces. It has the traditional craftsman inverted heart decoration cut into the oak. Do you know the meaning/history of the inverted heart design?

When I was a dealer, I went to a local antique auction. They were auctioning a chest on chest and found a compartment on top filled with money. I bought a buffet there once that was filled with antique lace and linen. Sold the contents for more than I paid for the furniture! LOL
