Here I compare two 19th century tilt-top breakfast tables, one stamped Gillows the other most definitely from their workshops. Gillows held a standard of excellence and both these tables are of exceptional quality. I hope you enjoy learning about the attributes of these pieces.

Hi, I have just acquired an oval mahogany table stamped Gillows Lancaster. It is missing its castors which I notice that your tables have. Could you possibly tell me what they should look like as they appear to be very low profile. Thanks.

Dear Ian sorry for not getting back earlier. Could take a photo of the underside of the area were the missing castor would be please. Then send it to cato@lennoxcato.com with a back up phone number. Then I'll be able to help you further. Regards Lennox Cato.

Hi Paul, no, they didnt always stamp their furniture. It is debatable but I would imagine if it was commisioned for a house, it usually wasnt stamped as it was recorded at both ends, by the supplyer and the receiver. Stamped pieces were usually sold from the London Oxford Street showrooms. Hope this is enough information for you? Regards Lennox

I was an antique dealer in the US for about 10 years and I was shocked at how many quality pieces of furniture were unmarked. If I was a maker my name would have been emblazoned everywhere LOL. Luckily, I have 3 marked pieces in my living room: a matched pair of oak Stickley rockers and an oak and leather foot stool made in New York. Don’t know if you in the UK know Stickley, but they were a famous American family of Arts and Crafts style furniture makers around the turn of the 20th Century. They had several different members of the family who formed separate companies.
