great video, a tiny question, why is there a File System and a Logical Volume ?
@Doriandotslash3 күн бұрын
Thanks! To put it simply, the logical volume is just the space where the file system goes. And it can be any file system.

These are built in programs that can be called in command line as well as system default files that are updating, and default option settings for the built in programs. As well as security running in the background. Those files are where the alteration of default settings parameters found only in the file.

It's no wonder that Unix was so safe and secure - the hoodlums couldn't figure out how to use it.

Ok so you were spot on about the annoying naming all sisters with the sane bootloader name. My install of zorin 15.3 is broken so decided to install 17.3 as a clean I stall on a new drive. It's a pain to get to the SSD being an AIO so I used the dvd sata for another SSD. Zorin installer wanted to overwrite or install alongside the existing install on the old drive, then even when I told it where to install and where to put the new EFI system it installed it on the right drive but just added it as another option on the existing bootloader😂 I will have to disconnect the other drive and start again.

Linux scared me as a child but now I have PTSD from using Windows at work. Regardless of a IT teks setting up the Win10 workstations to update every Friday night, unless a critical patch is released, the god damn machines sill update randomly throughout the week. Microsoft is the electronic shadow of Bill Gates, he vaccinates at will.

are all linux file systems structured this same way?
@Doriandotslash17 күн бұрын
Mostly yes. There’s a few niche distros that do things differently like NixOS and Silverblue, but they do special things that can’t be done with a typical file system.

@Doriandotslash Damn, fair play to replying to a comment on a 6 year old video.

Why was so hard for the original creators to name folders more "logically" like in Windows? System Files Users Installed Apps and that's about it. Wth is with "bin" (recycle bin?) 😂 Wth is "LIB" (I'm a LIBERAL"?😂😂😂
@Doriandotslash16 күн бұрын
Unix favored efficiency. Since it was all terminal-based back in the day, they chose short directory names that were quicker to type when typing commands or writing programs.

I like Debian, but I am a little partial to LMDE, which is Debian with some nice finishing touches by LinuxMint.

LMDE is a great distribution. I’ve used it for a while too. But I did switch back to OG Debian. I wish LMDE kept up with Debian releases a little faster.

How come no one talks about running windows and linux on separate hard drives ? That is way more difficult to get to work than on the same hard drive.
@DoriandotslashАй бұрын
Actually it’s easier. Unplug windows drive and plug in empty one. Install Linux. Plug windows drive back in. Now you can either use your boot drive selection hot key to chose which drive to run, or you can go into Linux and update grub to make windows available as a boot option on the grub menu.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves about Linux. You can't tell what's on what drive. Also, filenames should be case insensitive. You shouldn't have to worry about what case someone used in a filename.

I don’t want to imply that you’re wrong about /opt but just want to throw this out there: the best place to install software is in your user home directory unless it needs to be run with elevated privileges, or accessible to other users. If you can install and run the software with your normal user privileges and it doesn’t have to be accessible to other users then right in /home/username is the most convenient and most secure place.

@Doriandotslash Can you make a step by step video on dual booting Fedora 40/41 and Debian 12 in a single drive with Fedora being in control of the grub i.e. Fedora will be the primary OS? No Windows needed. I am tired of seeing people making dual boot with Windows and Linux. I don't know why they think that dual boot means one OS must be Windows?! Strange!!! But seeing your video, I think you are the person who can break this trend and in the process, people like me will be able to learn how to dual boot in these two Linux distros. Can you do that?

extremely useful for new Win users trying to migrate. For dual boot users, it would be very nice ( to say the least ) if a Linux partition had a volid so I could find it
@DoriandotslashАй бұрын
Since a Windows user is likely to install a GUI on the 2nd partition, they can use the file manager to quickly access the other partitions. If using the terminal with no GUI then you need to know a bit more.
