Just love the Chevy 348 engine. I was fortunate to buy in 1964 a 59 Impala that had the factory 348, 335 horse and Bog Warner 4-speed. A few things were found wrong with the 348 engine at the time. A close friend then, raced the 348 on the local circle track, and he pointed me in the right direction. The 348 engine operated on 35 lb. oil pressure even the 335 horse engines at 6,000 rpm as well. The 409 oil pump had 60 to 70 lbs. oil pressure. A switch to the 409 oil pump was needed. The 348 rocker arms were worn crooked, riding somewhat on the side of the valve stem. All new rocker studs along with springs and valves were needed, a new 335 horse cam as well. The exhaust manifold heat riser was stuck shut, forcing all exhaust out only one side of the exhaust pipe. Finally the front and back two barrels would not open at all. Cyclone exhaust headers fixed the exhaust issue, and progressive linkage on the tri -power fixed that. A cylinder hone with new pistons only, along with new bearings and a balance finished the short rebuild. End results was a very fast 348 engine of the day, that surprised many of the early muscle cars . A few early GTO's of the day only seen the eye brow taillights. Of all the Chevy's I have owned over the years, that 1959 Impala was the best ever. It was Grecian Gray with beautiful red and gray interior. If only I could have kept it to today, if only.

There is reason, after long time of use, valve cover bents slightly and your rubber gasket will leak after a while. Always use silicone on old cars.

I'm about to change a valve cover gasket on a Matrix. Got the felpro gasket and have some Permatex Red RTV high temp silicone to put on the two spots near the timing chain as recommended. You think it's gonna hold?

Gaskets these days are rotten from the parts store too. Hard n brittle from cheap overseas manufacturing and reduced quality. I miss the old days.

Very clean finished product: well done and glad that this sort top was given a new lease on life. 2nd Gen A-bodies certainly are special cars and deserve to be preserved: budget workhorses that are reliable and fun to drive. They're also incredibly well built and easy to maintain. Curious: what disc brake conversion set-up was chosen for the build? So often, kits seem to push the front tires outward toward the fender wheel opening and this set-up leaves it looking OEM. Thanks for sharing.

What you are going to rebuild in not a motor, it is an engine! A motor runs on electricity and an engine runs on some type of fuel like gas, diesel, etc. I just dont undertand why many experienced mechanics call engines motors, which they are not.

I always Loved 348's I remember the Saying We Had Back then at The Drags at Maple Grove Pa. -- You'll Win At The Gate With a 348. And I Loved the Good Old 409 Later down the road Cars were Exciting then waiting to see The Brand New Models on our Old Philco TV when Detroit Had the Yearly Car Shows. We Lost so Much of the Good Old Days from back then And 1957 was Such a Special Year For Gm Chevy, Chrysler and Ford! My Favorite saying was and still is Chevy's The Best, Wholesale The Rest! She's Real Fine My 409.

I'm a 75 year old farm-boy. There was a 1958 Chevy Apache on the farm with the 348-340 hp engine. The truck was ten wheel with a live axel closest to the engine with a "fan belt" attached to the rear axel in between the wheels. The biggest problem was keeping engine mounts and tranny mounts on the thing. And you could tell when one of them would let go, because there were engine or tranny shifting, especially with the thing loaded and being "under pull". That is the only problem I remember having with that truck. 1958 Chevy Apache...wow.

I recently went through an issue like this for 9 months on my vehicle that was well serviced. I kept getting the same code and replaced multiple parts. Went to another mechanic who could care less. I finally found a mechanic who inspected the vehicle thoroughly and was pissed off for me. If it was done properly the first time my time, money and family would not have had to suffer so much.

Don't know much about engines but a couple of my friends or at least one of them told me one time that the 348 was also known as the garbage truck engine motor that used to power a lot of garbage trucks back then in the late fifties into I believe the early 60s .
@miguell10183 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was an engine made for trucks but GM did not even mentioned it.

Had a 348 340 horse back in 65 being a kid I thought it was a world beater but in reality it sure as hell wasn't a 327 I have a book from General Motors on test that they ran on 348 the best they could get out of the 340 horsepower model was 280 horsepower so basically they lied in their advertising Too Short Stroke no RPM for the most part and they really want worth messing with but they were a good engine for a pickup truck that was about it

If you're using a rubber gasket and only place to use rtv sealant is on the corners and /or in small amount on stepped casting to fill in a gap. Excess rtv will do a few negative things. It will cause uneven pressure when tightening bolts causing splits, droop off on sides and worst excess could fall into pan and into openings and block flow, and it will make the gasket slide due to too much lubrication and that would cause a leak. It's not rocket science guys. It's just common sense.

I modified my slant six exhaust manifold by cutting off the outlet and welding a mild steel plate that I made into a 2 1/2 inch flange so there is no heat transfer to the intake manifold for added power as well as a bigger exhaust pipe. I doubt the customer would go for that. I used 7018 welding rod and a Lincoln 225AC.

just stumbled across your video . Ya it's amazing how someone watching someone else's video can nit pick things in the video 🙄. Very nice car. what did you or they use to paint the engine , intake and exhaust manifold? they look like they where dipped in clear glass 😎👍. the only thing I didnt like about factory slant 6 exhaust pipe on a slant6 is that it was restrictive . on my slant 6 in my 65 dart 2 door post car the exit port on the manifold is 2 or 2.25 wide and the factory exhaust flange was 1- 7/8 or some thing ? causes the heat to build up in the manifold and burns out the flange gasket over time . I switched to a flange and pipe that matched the exit port on the manifold . much better flow and performance and still looks stock. still a very nice car 😎👍🏁🇺🇸
