Mediocre 3.8 (229ci) V6 and a 4.4 (267ci) V8 were not for California due to dated leaded fuel engines. The 5.0 (305ci) and Z28 5.7 (350ci) V8 required regular and premium unleaded respectively.

Yuck. Crappy cars. Pushrod, low tech garbage motor, garbage transmission, and front wheel drive. They couldn't have made a less competitive car if they had planned it

I'd like to meet the engineers, if , still alive who ,designed those diesel engines, and the ones approved production., so I can tell them what a garbage of human, and crooks they are.. for building garbage ,and selling garbage.

These C body cars failed miserably in the crusher. The steering knuckles would shatter and lower ball joints would separate. The front struts would explode and oil would squirt out. The rocker panels would distort and buckle. The ‘89 models went to plastic fenders and would shatter thus making a mess inside the crusher.

Were they really painting the cars with another one of a different color just a few feet away on the production line? That seems like a recipe for overspray between cars.

My first car was a blue '80, it was very worn out by the late '00s when I had it, wound up selling it and getting a '79 that I still have. They're sort of awkward step children G bodies but I love them, don't remember the last time I saw another one.

ok I know the HT4100 wasn't great and neither was the transmission, but as I kid I thought this was the coolest car ever. My grandpa got one in late 84 when they first came out and was so excited that it was smaller, he didn't have to push the gas to start it, and that the windows still rolled down after the car was off. I with the powertrain was better because I think these were really great.

There a few minor dilemmas with the EPA Fuel Economy Ratings. They were what you could achieve an not what was avarage. I had a 78 GMC C15 with the 305 2BBl and Th350. It averaged about 17 if I wasn’t in a hurry. It’d get around 15 if I was trying to go somewhere fast. Now in 1981 they had the Electronic Quadrajet that used the CCC commands. Which worked great when new but if the carb had to be rebuilt it was basically useless if the mechanic didn’t have the dwell meters. I could see the 81 C10s getting the 21 mpg. Also Chevy had a lockup torque converter and if I’m not mistaken the C4 in Fords F Series didn’t. 2mpg does add up, but by no means meant the Ford wasn’t any reliable. From my experience the Chevy Engines wore out faster and smoked more then Fords. Seeing a Ford smoke meant something was wrong but didn’t mean anything for a Chevy.

It sure was a great time to be a GM Diesel mechanic... I made $16.65 per flat rate hour in the 80's .. Min. wage was $3.35 back then. There sure was a ocean of cars to fix...$$$$$$$$$$$$ P.S. The EPA mandated EGR valves were and still are a total disaster for ANY diesel engine.... And yes a 5500LB land yacht of a car could get 30 MPG on a regular basis... Just remember CLEAN emissions has ZERO to do with Mileage.......... The government EPA scam...

Had a 1981 custom deluxe with the 4.1 liter inline 6. I didn't dare try to pass anybody unless there was no one coming for at least 2 miles ahead. It was horribly slow. Put a 350 with a 700R tranny in it. Then it was fun to drive!

GM's sad attempt for the small car, fuel efficient, Honda and Toyota buyers back in the day. GM was never good at making small compact cars, and that's because midsize was the limit on small size with them over the decades.
