The Right is militantly opposed to even the idea of a "civic covenant". Great interview ! I was born 25 years too early. Every time l quit school and started hard physical labor, l and everyone else felt l had failed. I worked outside every day in all weather, including snow, and l “loved” it. But intellectual workers really put me down. Now I’m retired and when l tell people that l pruned trees for 25 years, (l’m a woman) people seem fascinated and respectful. Well, l’m so happy to see farmers and skilled trades making a big comeback. It really is satisfying work for many of us.

A very interesting conversation. I can sympathize, given that I'm even more of a failed academic - completing my masters's but failing my Ph.D. thesis - and then losing my mind to drugs and to pornography - ended up in prison (for nearly 5 years) - and then deported to France, whence from I'm watching this. Things ended rather more badly for me - I needed therapy, but I got prison and deportation instead. It's complicated because of the kind of pornography I stumbled on and downloaded for which I went to prison and labeled a sex offender. Things have never been the same since.

Everytime I hear this argument I feel that we forget to take into account the social structure of that time. Roman and Greek history and cultures are the best documented through scripts and archeological findings than any culture of western world and many of the Eastern! Through new archeological methods we add new things we learn about these cultures. The Hollywood model of depicting these cultures is not only inaccurate but mostly disrespectful and insulting. As for the comment for Christian religion preserving ancient scriptures and protecting ancient monumentsis mainly incorect. It is well documented that the Christian Church during the 3rd 4th and 5thcent CE was responsible for the destruction of ancient scientific scriptures and monuments.
