Yeah it’s not literal but still so stupid to me. If I’m not cutting my eye out literally then what should I do then?

In this part of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus is teaching us that it is not our own work that makes us righteous & gets us to heaven but his completed work for us! …Let’s look at the context in which Jesus is telling them to pluck the eye and cut the hand in the lines right above it Matthew 5:27-28. Jesus is saying you may not have slept with the woman but lusting with your eyes is just as bad. Someone who thinks it is up to themselves if they are a sinner may pluck their eye in attempts to stop their sin, but it won’t work. Even by plucking their eye out & trying their hardest not to sin; they can even still sin by their hands with no eyes. So trying harder, they cut off their hands. Still even after cutting their hands off, they can still commit sin with their heart. How can they cut off their heart? Jesus offers to cut out our hearts for us so that we may no longer serve ourselves in sin but have a new heart through him that he may live within us.

Key Themes in Context 1. The Depth of Sin • Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:27-28 reveals the true depth of sin: it begins in the heart, long before outward actions occur. Lust, hatred, and pride-all invisible to others-are exposed as violations of God’s perfect standard. • By highlighting the impossibility of overcoming sin through external measures like “plucking out an eye,” Jesus shows that the problem lies deeper: in the human heart. 2. The Impossibility of Self-Righteousness • The example of cutting off one’s hand or plucking out an eye is a stark picture of how futile it is to rely on human effort alone to achieve righteousness. As pointed out, even if someone removed their physical ability to sin, their heart would still remain sinful. • This reinforces the Sermon’s broader theme: God’s standard of righteousness (perfect holiness) is unattainable by human effort (Matthew 5:48). 3. The Need for a New Heart • The idea of needing a new heart is central to Jesus’ message. In Ezekiel 36:26, God promises, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus, who transforms believers by His Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:17). • Jesus calls for repentance, not physical mutilation, and offers a greater solution: He replaces our sinful hearts with hearts that desire to serve God. Cross-References Supporting This View • Jeremiah 17:9-10: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? This reminds us that sin originates in the heart, beyond physical actions. • Romans 7:24-25: Paul cries out, “O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Paul recognizes that deliverance from sin comes only through Christ. • Hebrews 10:16: “I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.” This speaks of God’s transformative work through the new covenant in Christ. Jesus as the Solution 1. Jesus’ Completed Work • Jesus fulfills the law perfectly on our behalf (Matthew 5:17) and takes the punishment for our sins (1 Peter 2:24). His death and resurrection make us righteous before God, not through our striving but through His grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). 2. Living with a New Heart • Through faith in Jesus, we are born again (John 3:3) and given new hearts that are no longer enslaved to sin (Romans 6:6). While we still battle sin, the Holy Spirit enables us to walk in obedience and grow in holiness. 3. Transformation from Within • Instead of external measures like plucking out an eye, Jesus transforms us from the inside out. His Spirit helps us overcome sinful desires and align our lives with God’s will (Galatians 5:16-18). Summary Jesus’ teaching in this passage is a call to recognize the futility of trying to achieve righteousness through human effort. Instead, He points to our need for a Savior who can cleanse our hearts and give us new life. Plucking out an eye or cutting off a hand cannot solve the problem of sin, but surrendering to Christ and receiving His new heart can.

OR practice mindfulness (like going to church) use your modern brain and just not be sinful.... Instead of committing sins and then asking for forgiveness like a weak primodial brained person....

except the bible teaches that you can’t “just not be sinful.” it is only by the Holy Spirit that we are able to resist the sinful desires of the flesh. read galatians 5.

My phone is probably the biggest stumbling block I have. I find myself using my phone more than spending time with the LORD. I'd like it to be the other way around and I hate that this tiny device has so much power over me.

@@tizzy4202 i feel you on this. i got rid of social media for a couple days a while ago and it helped me a lot with this problem. i realized i was spending a lot more of my day on it then i thought, so since i wasn’t spending those extra hours on my phone it naturally made my spend more time in the Word and prayer!!

My phone causes me to sin, unfortunately. And it’s not just one either. Lust, AND Laziness. And don’t think I’m attached to my phone or anything, my soul desires to destroy it just about as much as my body desires to lust. I’m not just saying that, I’ve been ready to just bite the bullet and do it. And, this may be a weird thing to say, so bear with me here, but I notice a difference when I’m lusting with and without my phone, if you catch my drift. With my phone, I’m fully focused on it, but without it, I’m constantly hearing Christian songs, sermons, and other things like that replaying in my head as if God is literally talking from inside my head, making it much harder to focus, and therefore, making it easier, or even hard not to just stop. With that subtly graphic description out of the way, my phone is absolutely not my tool, but a tool of the devil. I feel sick just typing it on said tool. So, I know it’s dangerous to keep with me, I want it gone, why didn’t I do it a long ago? Because, it’s literally a lifeline to my family, which besides my mom, dad, and nana, live pretty far away (for reference, the distance between New Orleans, Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama), as well as being one of my primary ways of learning Portuguese, and doing 2 of my hobbies, though, I am willing to do them differently, or even compromise them entirely, especially when the stakes are higher than the Burj Khalifa. So yeah, mainly outside pressure keeping me from getting rid of my phone. I’ve thought of alternate ways of communication, but to no avail yet. Any advice, or suggestions? Thoughts, even?? Something, please, I wanna move past this part of my life and live the way God wants me to😭🙏

Read this verse; Matthew 5:37. also stop trying to read into everything, take everything for face value (exactly what it is/doing) & the block feature exists for a reason. Block whatever it is that’s holding you back

There are dumb phones that don’t have access to the internet it’s all the basics, think back to 2007 it has the calendar text calls notes alarm clock maybe pictures but that’s it no App Store no internet, as for Portuguese use a laptop but make sure to add blockers and even use a book on the side.

I've taken measures to cut off that which makes me sin, but my mind still remembers the names. The enemy tempts me by musing about sinful imagery I've seen, as if asking to refresh my memory about it. And while I've mitigated my exposure to sin, I still can remember it. May the Lord Jesus Christ have mercy upon me a sinner.

Eek, definitely catching your drift right now, I feel ya. As for advice, I, unfortunately, am still a step behind you, so I don’t trust myself to offer advice. But I just wanna tell you, you aren’t alone bro. The Devil has plagued the most technologically advanced countries with this sin, that I don’t even need to say the name of, since we both know what we’re talking about. This is a problem that, during this point in time, is probably more common than alcoholism. The best we can do is to remove it from our lives, and not let it curse our children. So, here’s to the generation of Christians that will provide wisdom against this sin to the generation(s) of Christians that will come after us, can I get an Amen?✝️

Gosh it’s extremely saturated in women ads showing off lingerie and everything shows! They’re trying to sell me undergarments but do it in a very suggestive manner it even makes me double take…I can’t imagine how men do it, the countless OF accounts, everything is exposed, teens are their main audience…influencing girls to be Jezabels and men to be perverse… my husband doesn’t even have social media anymore it’s just too much. 10 years ago it was easier to avoid this now it’s impossible!!
