australia needs only 3 or possibly 4 super teams , rebels , force are a liability any talent that goes there diminishes..

The 2023 World Cup winning Springboks played in the final with a starting lineup made up of players from 11 different clubs. Not just different clubs but also from four different leagues in four different countries. In the Springboks last 26 test matches up to the World Cup final, the Springboks used 54 players. In that time, they only used the same starting 15 twice in consecutive matches and the same match day 23 only once in consecutive matches. The Springboks clearly didn't align with the logic used in this video.

Wallabies are now the West Indies of Rugby Union!!
@MjolnirMarks6 ай бұрын
Growing up in South African in the 90’s, I thought the Wallabies were always a top contender, and that rugby union was a big sport in the country. I’ve now lived in Australia for half a decade, and I now see a very different reality. The love and appreciation for the sport and participation in rugby union in Australia is nothing compared to SA.

As a rebels fan, i always think we need to cut the rebels and force and make it just the brumbies, reds & waratahs. As a Melbourne lad i would support the reds for sure. this would give our national team the best chance for world cup success! Make the 3 teams have youth programs in Melbourne, Northern Territory and Western Australia to pick the best from these states but keep 80% of the teams local talent. It will grow the game and accully make the wallabies a fortress once again.

This is one (very good) theory. Is it also not because more Australian men would prefer to be on Masterchef than a rugby field?

Great video. I’m sure it’s already been mentioned but the consistency of coach (and support staff) is probably even more important as this is what sets the foundation for players.. in that regard ARU have been woeful.. just ask Eddie

Should have a look at the lack of funding that the ARU put into outback and regional areas. Blood from a stone.

We did not come all the way from South Africa and made Australia our home to see Australian Rugby in decline, this need to be fixed as a matter of urgency, my children are born here and they are Australians, I can see the pain in their faces when they just watched South Africa beat New Zealand and they must wonder what is going on. We should not let our children down, Investment in the game as decline, clubs has close down, all because they lack roll models. In South Africa and New Zealand Rugby is a Religion, a way of life it will never change, but having our children play NRL or AFL is a complete waste of time and energy, their is no glory in playing yourself over, and over, and over, we need International participation and unless we can convince all Rugby playing Nations to form NRL or AFL teams (which will never happen) we have to build on Union, stop the decline and get the Wallaby's back on track, for our children's sake.

Interesting. I definitely agree that the expansion from 3 teams to 5 was a disaster however I believe that there is a two other fundamental reasons. The first is the increased funds for European clubs. This has definitely helped SA rugby as our massive talent at school level ( now that the game is followed by all of SA and is no longer the preserve of one group Rugby is being played everywhere at all schools from the townships to the private schools) can now not only play rugby in SA but also in Europe and earn € and £s at no cost to SARFU While the same can be done in Aus and NZ there is one massive problem .. time zones. Although SA is in the Southern Hemisphere our time zones are essentially the same as Europe so you can sit back in the afternoon /evening and support your players in Europe ( all the games are shown here) . AUS and NZ have the tyranny of time … no one wants to watch their team play first thing in the morning. So it’s natural that AFL and NRL will dominate as that’s what people will watch on a Saturday afternoon!!! Best bet for AUS and NZ is to include teams in Super Rugby from Japan/ Hong Kong and Singapore that way you will have competitive teams. Earning $ or ¥ but you can watch the games in the afternoon. SA Rugby only changed when it realised if no longer has the funds to keep its players playing for SA provinces… rather let them play professionally in Europe but still select them for the Boks

Outside of Sydney and Brisbane, club rugby doesn't really exist at the same level. Rugby has room for growth in Australia. It's needs restructuring down to high school rugby. Commercially the shute shield would struggle in an already saturated Sydney market. NRC almost found the right formula with franchises. 3 from NSW, 2 from QLD, 1 from VIC, ACT, WA. Fiji has canned the skipper cup. That opens the door for a Fijian franchise. Super Rugby started as artificial teams that people have gotten behind. The NRC was working imo.
@WilliamStJohn947 ай бұрын
Also how did this argument hold up when NZ and SA provincial rugby also have more than 3 provincial teams and NZ has less of a population? So if Australia wants to win again we need less super rugby teams? I see that as a little simplistic
@WilliamStJohn947 ай бұрын
Think there is something to be said about how ARU Is with its grass roots campaign in comparison to other sports. Here in QLD AFL & NRL are smashing union at every unprofessional level. These are the future of Rugby, not being invested in at the same level. These are the future supporters that are not invested because they wernt introduced at a young age. I think ARU relies too much on Private School Rugby.

Going through the comments how many people here are Aussie? It looks like 70% or 80% are people from other countries, there's one of your biggest problems, if the Aussies don't give a f about their own team why would kids growing up want to play for them?

Personal opinion here: but I blame the 2004 baby bonus for the rise in Eshays in the late 2010's, the slump in general sport performance in the early 2020's and the mullet returning to fashion.

Or you can simply say "Eddie Jones" and that to itself explains the downfall of the wallabies
@hueyh56377 ай бұрын
It’s as simple as this, rugby league is more popular in Australia than union, thus taking all the talent. One glimpse at the International rugby league ranking shows AUSTRALIA at no1 and countries like South Africa at 26 and england and Argentina at 49. Go to the rugby union world rankings and you will see a vastly different story.

Austrailia rugby went down when they did Folau wrong. Karma , now no young prospect wants to go to union, they would rather play nrl.
@RTransportGuy3 ай бұрын
lol Australian rugby was on the decline well before the Folau saga. Getting flogged by 30-50 to 0/7 against the All-Blacks year in year out for almost 20 years isn't a good advertisement for Rugby.

Australian rugby starts from the grass roots level. It focusses on private schools. Plus other codes like rugby league and AFL greatly reduces the talent pool.

The fall of the Australian Rugby team has been the intrusion of WOKE ideology group think into its management and then the the players. I would suggest that Australian Rugby needs to concentrate on "how to win" and focus less on the virtual signalling of woke ideology such as "what a woman is", LGBIQ++, "The voice to parliament" etc and not penalising (ostracising) players who fail to bend the knee to WOKE ideology and dare to think differently and have opinions different than the "enlightened ones".

Rugby leaders should be fired. They have taken this sport in Australia and made it horrible. Paying million dollar contracts for league players to play for two years for no gain what so ever. You can’t watch rugby anymore unless you have foxtel so how do you improve at the grassroots. No one cares about bledisloe cause NZ pounds is every year. It starts at the top.

just watching this after Australia are on the way home from the 23 world cup as they failed to qualify for the quarter finals for the first time. The blazers killed Union in OZ. SA joining the URC will make SA and NH Teams more competitive feeding into the national sides. I fear NZ will go the way of OZ in the next 5 years.

I’d say the main thing was that Australian rugby players were professional long before everyone else. When everyone else stopped being amateur and having full time jobs they caught up and overtook owing to their stronger domestic leagues.

As much as this video kind of makes sense{it doesnt}. If Australia cant field and absolutely paltry 5 teams, you dont deserve to win anything. The Socceroos can put together a team from all around the planet with players from over 20 clubs but you cant put together a squad from 5 teams. Yeah, garbage.
@bruantquentin27778 ай бұрын
The analysis fall short when you compare it with the northern nations. Yes Ireland, Wales and Scotland changed their view. But France did not. It is the same championship with 14 teams and the players are selected from these 14 teams according to their performances. According to your analysis, France should have crumbled down behind these teams. And it didn t happen even if the French team has had a difficult period in the the near past. I think it is more due to an ensemble of parameters, than to only one. Lack of transfer of experience from the more experimented players to the youngest, keeping with the "golden era" team far longer than needed to merge several generations, a lack of infrastructure for the young teams to gradually climb for competition level, etc. Again the example of the French team is quite clear, the team playing today has dominated the U21 world championship for three consecutive time even if they play within the 14 teams of the first division in France and even in the second division
