Seeing everybody else's comments I'm really torn. I try to be understanding but I don't know everything she has done to Ody. She seems like she genuinely loving him and respects his space and when she reaches out and pulls away. This song really hurts because it makes me think how hard I have tried to love everyone around me but it has always been one sided effort. Been dealing with when my mom left me when I was young and it just now (I'm 29) is effecting me. Sorry if this makes me a bad person.

Honestly. I don’t hate Calypso, yeah what she does is hurtful and everything but people have to understand. She’s been stuck there for her entire life, Lonely, sad, alone. But when Odysseus came she actually had hope and he left after seven years. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like Calypso but I don’t hate her either. In PJO when Leo lands on her Island in House of Hades you can tell she’s lost hope in love sense there’s been about four people to her island before him. She tells Leo something along the lines of “So you can go back to your Penelope, Elizabeth, Annabeth?!” (I don’t 100% remember but something like that). You can clearly tell she’s just accepted her fate of never having an actual loved one. And it was all because she was loyal to her father. Again, I don’t like Calypso but I don’t hate her either.

Not gonna lie, my emotions change depending on an animatic of this particular song. One where they make Calypso sympathetic and actually sincere, I go " NOOOOOOOOO 😭😭😭😭" Then we have this and the others where she's manipulative, and I go, "YEAH SCREW YOU CALYPSO"

Ok, but considering that everyone sees sirens differently (siren song makes them hear/see what they most desire) that opening scene is probably confusing as heck for one of the crew members who just wants to see their dad/mom/family member. Like, your ultra loyal, will not so much as entertain flirting with another person after 12+ years away from his wife, is just… flirting and holding your dad so sensually???? Imagine if they didn’t know that about sirens and just saw that.

AAAGH WHEN SHE WAS LEFT SOBS

Something pretty off topic, but the animatic actually kind of characterizes Calypso and Odysseus, along with their dynamic, pretty well. I keep seeing her get mischaracterized as a terrible person and a b-word (no name calling here!!!) for what she’s done. Although, yes, it was pretty shitty to, y’know, trap a mortal on her island for 7 years. But, for one, she isn’t a person. She’s a nymph/minor goddess. These are more of personifications of things, or just not people in human society. Therefore, it’s pretty normal in her standards to do so. Secondly, she’s been alone for most of her life, aka HUNDREDS OF YEARS. It’s common for people of abandonment to attach themselves to others, in an almost and sometimes a fully unhealthy manner. And, I find it irregular that the average person would do otherwise. So, although her actions were dogshit and her actions are not justified, it would be understandable she would trap Odysseus, even if it isn’t the best. Additionally, Odysseus seems more socially detached in the animatic, and clearly had no genuine happy memories with Calypso. I’ve seen other animatics where he sympathizes with the nereid/nymph, despite trapping him away from his wife, and possibly could’ve sexually assaulted him and what not. He seems mentally damaged from the experience, hence the blank expression, little speech, etc. I mean, who wouldn’t? Overall, I think this animatic paints both struggles of the characters. Calypso’s isolation, clear attachment issues, and generally the common effects of abandonment… also the fact her man’s leaving her and she’ll probably see another. Odysseus is mentally harmed from the experience, scarred and socially detached… I’M SPEAKING YAPPANESE YOU CAN TRANSLATE IN GOOGLE/j

AAAAUUUUHHHH THIS IS SO GOOD. I love your style, especially your eyes-they are so wonderfully expressive, both the desperation in Calypso’s and the emptiness in Ody’s; it’s all so perfect. And yes it’s been said in every comment but I’ll say it again: HIM NOT LOOKING AT HER EVEN DURING HIS LINE WAS S U C H A GOOD TOUCH!! I’ve always felt a little bad for Calypso. It’s not her fault she was stranded (in mythology she’s being punished for the crime of being a Titan’s daughter). But it isn’t Odysseus’ either, and she does her damnedest to make him feel responsible and guilty. Odysseus is a married man completely helpless on this island, desperate to return home; and Calypso has, at every turn and every moment for seven years, completely ignored his feelings, desires, and grief. It’s a shame she’s probably genuinely in love with him, or at least what she believes to be love, because he’s the one person in all of humanity and divinity who has the literal god-given right to absolutely _despise_ her.

I want to bathe in your art. It’s sublime. I got shivers watching this. I love the emotions across Calypso’s face throughout this piece. The sulking, begrudging apology and the anger and sadness. It takes real skill to portray such an emotionally complex interaction through animation. It’s a tough scene to capture for so many reasons, but you‘ve really done it justice. Thanks for sharing your talents with the world. I hope to see more from you! …Also the spin shot as Calypso unravels around the 2:07 mark is exactly how I envisioned it in my head. I absolutely love how you expressed these two; especially the more manipulative aspect of Calpyso. Even with showing her as a victim herself she herself became the abuser and harmed Odysseus even if unintentionally. And then Odysseus never even caring to spare a glance. I know a lot of people say he says he loved her and means it but I don’t think he did. I think he literally said it either to be spiteful or because he that’s the only control he’s been able to have that entire time. That even through all the emotional abuse he’s been able to deny her the one thing she’s wanted. I just love how this is closer represented from Gigi’s official animatic from the livestream where were we he truly doesn’t care. Why say he loves her only to correct her? I think it’s just him getting that one jab in, and as he should.
