What can you do with this magical wand ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to have missed your question, Hamouda. As for what you can do with this particular wand, you'll have to ask Tom! By now, both Tom and the wand will be very much attuned to one another, and I'm afraid I have no idea what he uses it for - indeed, in our world, that would be rather impolite to ask, and equally I cannot divulge what Tom has gone on to do. (He is in his early 20s, now, and lives a good way off, so we have rather lost touch, though I usually see him, once each year, when he visits at Christmas.)

Professor, what are the properties of rosewood in wand making ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
Rosewood is a dense, hard, many-coloured, often brittle timber, and as such it is suited to the witch or wizard who makes decisions and takes actions spontaneously, without too much consideration of the alternative possibilities. This can be a good or a bad thing, of course, depending on the character and natural inclinations of the person concerned.

My pleasure! As far as I know, the trick with the thumb was my own idea, after I had spent almost 2 weeks trying to find out how to tie one of these things. Of course, it may well be that someone else thought of it first, and I have seen it appear in the odd video since this, rather old, presentation was first put on. The magical community has to live in the same country as the non-magical one, so we are affected in more or less the same way, though we do have the advantage of being able to isolate ourselves rather more effectively, by the use of charms which discourage others from coming too close. People with magical ability are really no different from anyone else - leaving aside the magic, of course! We have our likes and dislikes, our triumphs and failures, our friendships and those with whom we do not get on. There are the good, the bad, the selfish and the selfless, the stupid and the intelligent - just like any group of human beings; and, like any other group of people, how far we get in life depends upon luck, opportunity, education and application.

Professor, are there spells that can hide the house of a wizard from the view of a non wizard ? If it exists, do wizards use it to hide their settlements from non wizards in the UK ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
There *are* concealment charms, it is true, but these are usually used to hide small objects from anyone - magical or non-magical, in the same way that you might hide something inside a hollow book. It is not really a practical method, and it certainly would not work for something as large as a building.

I'll be honest, I had tried ordering a pre-tied three-piece accessory set for my fiancé during this quarantine as he is not well-versed in fashion (yet), nor could I afford even a moderately priced ascot for him. He and I are both financially struggling and in a private American University. However, I have nearly three years on him and have slightly better financial standing, hence why his accessories come from my pocketbook. Anyhow, we marry in just over a week's time, and I'm still sewing my own gown and making my own jewelry and shoes only to realize the tie is not going to arrive. I'm going to have to make him one with the leftover cheap satin that I'm using for my dress. Mind you, I know the frustration of cheap satin and how to make do as it's all I can afford. Thanks to this video, I now have the confidence to not only make an ascot, but also how to tie it. It would surely dress up my groom's untailored tuxedo that his uses for choir with Uni and will noticeably be reusing for our wedding ceremony. Here's to making fabulous out of frugal! 🥂
@Offshoreorganbuilder
@Offshoreorganbuilder 4 жыл бұрын
A great comment, and I entirely agree with you, regarding 'making your own.' Most people are completely clueless as to how to tie or wear an Ascot, so there is no recognised appearance for one. (I imagine that, in Victorian or Edwardian times, the details of how you tied your Ascot would be admired, or not, but these days, when no-one much knows how to tie a bow tie, and many cannot make a proper job of tying a standard neck-tie, any kind of Ascot is bound to attract admiration and general amazement. And when you add to that the remark, 'I made it, myself,' your are bound to be on a winner! Congratulations and good luck on the big day!

Professor, do wizards live with each other in secret communities to prevent themselves from getting caught by non-wizards or do they live among non-wizards but hiding in plain sight ? Has this been observed in the English magic communities ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
As you might expect, Sam, those of use with magical abilities tend to make friends with others of the same kind, and often live amongst those with similar interests. This has certainly led to groups of magical people living close to each other - but it is not a deliberate policy, nor is it uniquely true. You may well know someone who has magic, and never be aware of it!

Dear Krishaa, My apologies for the late reply, as I have been rather busy with other matters, lately. If you do have magical abilities, you are already a member of the magical community, and will be enrolled in a suitable school as soon as you reach the appropriate age. Professor, are there any magical objects owned by non-wizard in museums ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
There are, inevitably, some magical objects which have found their way into the non-magical world. Where these are still 'active' in some way, or capable of being accidentally used, they are traced and either retrieved or otherwise made inert - usually the latter, as removing an object simply draws attention to it. The very few which 'slip through the net' are the ones which turn up as 'talismans' or 'lucky charms'. When this happens, it always comes to the attention of someone with magical abilities, and this results in the 'talisman' being made inert: which is why so few of these objects work as they were originally said to!

Professor, was there an incident of wizards and non-wizards uniting for a common cause ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
This has happened more often than you might think, but in every case it has happened without the knowledge of those in the non-magical world - for obvious reasons. The times when something of real importance just happened to 'turn out right' might well be instances of interference from a person, or people, with magical ability. It is not unknown for someone in the 'non-magic' world to have a friend from the 'other side', and in there are cases of one friend helping another, as you might expect, though always without the knowledge of the recipient!

Professor, are there wizards who are famous in the non magic world ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
Dear Sam, The immediate answer to your question is 'yes' of course there are. With their innate advantages, and human nature being what it is, there has been more than one case of a person with magical ability who has used that gift in the non-magical world to their advantage. The penalties for doing so (from 'our' side) are severe, though, and such people therefore maintain a strictly low profile, both from the magical as well as the non-magical community. Otherwise, the world would be full of such people, preying upon others.

Professor, what do you do in alchemy ? Is it concerned with turning lead into gold and making a philosopher’s stone or can we do much more ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
I am limited in what I allowed to say in answer to that question, Sam, but I can confirm that turning lead into gold was a misconceived ambition of some of the earlier experimenters in what came to be known as 'alchemy'. We certainly do not recognise them, now, as alchemists, though their early attempts did lead others along a more fruitful path. Alchemical Studies - as a school subject - deals with the basic principles of the nature of materials, both living and dead, natural and man-made, and the way in which they react and influence each other and the human beings, plants and animals around them. For instance, Tom's relationship with what we might reasonably call *his* wand-tree would fall within that subject. His presence had an influence on the tree, and it its turn, the tree would undoubtedly have modified Tom's perception and guided his thinking in a certain way. That would probably explain how he came to perform the complex magic of core insertion; something which should have been beyond a person of his age, experience, and ability. Equally, the manner in which the manticore skin, the wand, and Tom, influenced each other, when he attempted disapparition in the way in which he did, is another example. Alchemical Studies is a very wide and complex area of interest and there are many who have spent their lives in investigating it.
