A simple request as to what another interesting topic may be. I believe there is such a thing and place that a magical device, which looks very much like a Muggle's organ, but has magic symbolism runes carved on the keys, is found. Rumor has it that this magical, Organ-like piece can be, when used properly with the right magical combination, helpful in finding a magical portal. This subject, although very normal to the magical world, may be very different to muggles. In any case, I wish the best to all wizards and witches, and of course The Ministry of Magic, and I thank them for this video.

In this country, there is a shortage of apprentices in both the fields you mention, and I imagine that the same may hold true where you are presently living. These days, we seem to be sending many of our students to some form of career organised by the Ministry, but, speaking personally, I think it a great pity, and very short-sighted, to be neglecting the traditional crafts. For instance, it has now become almost impossible to find double-bottomed cauldrons of the Bentink pattern. Good luck in your future endeavors!

Very pleasing to read that you find this presentation still of interest. Tom did make another on his own, but so far he has not 'got around' (as he says) to showing it, which rather sounds to me as if he is 'spending' his time on the wrong pursuits! May you never, completely, lose your sense of wonder and a belief in the possibility of magic; after all, it *is* real!

Thank you for being the first muggle to make a comment on this, and most especially for pressing the 'LIKE' button, as I'm told you did. It is a shame that our first comment should be a negative one, but I suppose we have only ourselves to blame. After more than 200 years of trying to convince the muggle world that magic in its many forms does not exist, we can hardly be surprised that someone like yourself believes this to be the case. One day, you may change your mind! Good luck - N.P.Petros

I would like to personally thank the Ministry of Magic for this very well put together and educational video. I have always had a feeling there was something more out in our universe than what meets our eye, and now I am certain. I understand that you must only give out information of your world with limited permission, and I am truly thankful for what you have made here. If a time comes again where you receive permission to share more, staff making may also be of interest to us muggles, it would to me. Well, thank you very much again for your information to us.

Drew Norton Thank you for your interesting comments. I am particularly pleased to read that you found our little presentation useful, and I have noted your request for further information in this form, and will draw this to the attention of the relevant parties when this topic is next discussed in committee. (Yes, I am afraid that, even in the non-muggle world, there are committees!) Whilst we have no plans as yet for further projects of this kind, I do know that Tom has made a 'video' (as you would call it) of his own, concerning an unexpected and rather sad culmination of his experiences with the Wand Tree. He created this some months ago, but I am afraid that its presentation has been delayed by objections from some at the Ministry. However, I am hopeful that it will be made widely available in the near future, as I consider it to demonstrate a valuable lesson in life - that things do not always turn out as one might expect! (You may be interested to know that Tom completed his time with us, and opted to further his Muggle Studies by the unusual step of securing a place in a Muggle university, where his fellow students are blissfully unaware of his background! His dispatches have caused a good deal of amusement, here in the staff-room. He really is a most unusual student, and I look forward to following his progress, in the future.)

Dear Sam, I must give you full marks for an enquiring mind! To answer some of your questions: > The obvious choice of wood for Indian wand-makers might be thought to be rosewood, and though this *is* used for some wands, the timber from the Indian Mangifera tree (sometimes called Mango) is probably the most common choice, and accounts for the fact that Indian wands are commonly a dark grey in colour. > Beech: Strength of character in general, determination, unswerving of purpose. > Elder: (Sambucus): Associations with the devil and evil in general have no basis in the truth. Elder wands are best suited to owners whose interests lie in the country, with a sympathy for wildlife and open places. Elder wands have a pale, yellow colour. > Yew: (The wood from the male tree is commonly used.) Such a wand suits an owner whose character is arcane and secretive. Far more than elder wands, it is the owner of the yew wand who should be treated with caution. That said, there are exceptions to every generalization. As for phoenix feathers - equatorial or otherwise - I'm afraid I cannot go into details. This is something beyond the scope of this presentation, on which there are strict limits.

Thank you for this insightful comment, especially regarding the 'Harry Potter' stories, which were intended to have just this effect. As you say, it is hardly surprising that so many people (the majority, in fact) have great difficulty in opening their minds to the possibility of something so outside their ordinary experience. Despite Doyley's recent comment, I remain optimistic that, in the fullness of time, the Initiative will be successful. (But it will take years rather than months.)

@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
There are too many wand woods to list their properties, here, but to give two examples, oak has been found useful in transmutation work, probably due to its high tannic acid content, and holly is excellent when it comes to telekinesis. Phoenixes, in one form or another, are found to be native to most hot lands, so look to countries near the equator, an exception being the arctic phoenix, which is pure white and has thick, rather furry feathers.

I am not familiar with the kind of wand you describe, Quinnton, but if it is from a reputable maker, and if you do possess magical ability, I suggest you start with a simple 'water ripple' charm (creating ripples on the surface of water, when there is no wind or other disturbance.) That would be a good test! Sorry to have taken so long to reply to you, and the best of luck!

You are quite correct. A wand really is useful in all tasks, great and small, but we are at present greatly restricted in the information which can be shared. The Ministry's directions on this matter are full of phrases such as, '... by purely Muggle means ... ' ... only so far as would be possible for an ordinary Muggle ...' ' ... strictly without the use of real magic ...' etc. So, whilst you may make a wand by following this presentation, it will always remain inactive and without a core.

Hello, I did my wand from Aspen tree and I want to say it looks awesome! I thought its not a magic tree so I found a 400 years old pine but I couldnt find any branch so I cut pines root just a little bit :) . I drilled in my wand small hole to put the pines root in it. Can u tell me can the wand work or I have to start all over it. :) ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 9 жыл бұрын
Ingrida Geciene Firstly, let me say that I congratulate you on making your wand. I am sure it looks very good, and it is a pity that we cannot see any images of it. Aspen has been used for wands in the past. It is suitable for delicate work, and so is the choice for those making tapestries, watches, fine jewelry and the like. Unfortunately, I have never heard of anyone using pine root as a magical core, and in any case, the insertion of a magical core into any wand requires certain spells and techniques which are usually known only to experienced wand-makers. (Tom was either very lucky or unusually skillful to do what he did. It is not something which most people could manage. But, then, he is (or I should say, was) a brighter-than-average pupil.) Enjoy your wand as it is, but if you find a wand-maker who can insert a true magical core, then it should work perfectly well.

Professor ,I also have this question,if you might read the Indian Hindu holy book of "bhagwad gita" there are mentions of muggle magic What does muggle magic mean? Can it be used by anyone? Is it good or bad? I'm sorry professor if I may have asked too many questions,I have earnest apologies
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 5 жыл бұрын
Dear Arnold, You have asked some very deep and interesting questions, and I shall try to answer them as best as I can. Yes, of course there is 'dark' magic, just as any human endeavour can be misused by the unscrupulous and those with evil intent. If a person opts to follow an evil path, it is that person's choice, so it is fair to say that they must have been 'evil' in some sense, even before making that decision. It is a character flaw in that person, and to fight against it is very difficult and may be impossible. I think the only way to address the problem is by example; by showing yourself to be opposed to such practices and such people, and by drawing attention to them and condemning them whenever you find them. In the most extreme cases, that is what we have laws for: to prohibit the worst of these practices for the benefit of the general population, and this may mean removing the person or persons concerned from the rest of us. There *are* certain ways to fight 'dark magic' with its opposite, but these are highly specialised and best left to those who understand them. On the subject of language used in spells and enchantments, Latin is not, by any means, the only language used. It all depends on the individual and I dare say that Sanskrit would be as good as any, providing the person who developed the incantation found it useful. Personally, I have never heard of such a usage, but that is not to say it does not exist. I'm sorry to say that I have no knowledge of the Indian Hindu holy book of "bhagwad gita", so I do not know what is meant by 'muggle magic'. In the real world of those with magical abilities, we do not use the term 'muggle'. This is a word invented by Miss Rowling and used in her charming and amusing series of 'Harry Potter' stories, and whilst these bear some resemblance to the true magical world, they should not be taken too literally. So, I am afraid I cannot make any comment on that particular point. And now, I really must go and prepare for my next session; so I wish you well and hope that you will always live in the light and never turn to the shadow, either in magic or in the ordinary things of life.

Professor, what do you think Stonehenge was made for? Most archeologists think that it might be a mass burial grave or some kind of calendar.
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 5 жыл бұрын
I wondered when I should be hearing from you again, Sam! I am no expert on ancient monuments such as Stonehenge, but it is well-known that it lies at the convergence of over a dozen ley lines, and whilst we take little notice of such phenomena these days, it must have been very different in times past, when magic - like the rest of the human world - would have been much more primitive. Ley lines, like dowsing, is a very simple and primitive form of magic, which is why some people outside the magical world can be sensitive to the one and able to find water and so on, with the other. As I have often said, magical ability is a question of degree. Those with none are as rare as those with extreme powers. I doubt if the 'mass grave' idea is likely, but to be honest, I just don't know. Perhaps the ancients thought of that site as a centre of 'power' of some sort: - who can say?

Prof. Petros , another question I needed to ask you. Can I use quartz crystal as a wand core ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
Crystals have been used in unusual circumstances, but these are not common, as the material has to be ground to a specific size, using a mortar and pestle and only an experienced wand-maker will be able to do this successfully. Quartz would probably be acceptable, though I have never used it myself, and do not know what its properties might be. An interesting idea, though.

Prof. Petros , does the wand emulate the wizard by changing itself to match the wizard ? For example : If a wizard become less human by splitting his soul , does the wand start stripping it's outer appearance ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
To answer your three questions: ... No, a wand will not change its outward appearance, even if there is a radical change in the wizard's personality, but such a change will affect the relationship between the the two of them and so affect the effectiveness of the wand. ... The phoenix can be found occurring naturally in most countries with sufficient vegetation and a warm climate. It is not possible to tame a phoenix, though they will become attached to a wizard for reasons which remain unclear. Phoenixes cannot be caught. ... You cannot add any core to a wand without the use of magic, so 'muggle' methods will not work, I'm afraid.

The lack of comments when theyve been shown something that should have turned their world upside down is amazing. They just don't seem that bothered. My apologies for the delay in replying to you. I'm afraid that we have been having trouble with the muggle notifications for this presentation. To answer your question, the kind of charms, spells and enchantments you can manage with a working wand depends in part on the wand itself, and in part on your own abilities. Both wand and wand-holder grow together as each gains experience, both of the world around them and of each other. It is a complex process and one which, even now, is imperfectly understood. At a basic level, you should be able to perform simple control over inanimate objects, such a sliding a small coin or quill along a polished table. Levitation of even light objects is considerably more difficult for the beginner, though extinguishing a candle or lamp flame is not too demanding. I hope this answers your question, at least in part. N.P.P.

Professor, I am very curious about your wands. What cores did they use? Can you also tell me about some other spells that aren't dangerous but easy? Also, if you don't mind, can you please tell the wand movement of the Foxglove charm (if it has any)?
@ProfPetros

For my own use, I have always preferred the hairs taken from a ransogrit's tail. (The ransogrit is a small, herbivorous mammal, about the size of a fox, with a pointed snout and long, trailing tail.) The usual movement for the Foxglove charm is based on a of figure of eight, pointing the wand downwards at the plant. The first pass is downwards at the soil, then moving the tip of the wand up, anticlockwise to form the figure of eight, followed by a long, sweeping movement upwards, to draw the growing stem towards the light. As the Foxglove charm is already public knowledge, I feel perfectly easy in telling you this, but I cannot go into detail regarding other spells, I'm afraid.

Look, let's get this sorted once & for all. Sloth sticks can work (but not all that well) with some wand woods & even then only some of the time.I'm not sure who Samantha Williams is but the most likely thing for her to have done is to use a mixture of tallow and babbitt hair. (The tallow stops the hair from drying out after long use. It also coats the inside of the wand and waterproofs it which can be handy if you use a wand out of doors a lot.) So stop banging on about sloth sticks Dan!

Thank you for your insightful comments and we appreciate your offer of assistance and will bear it in mind should it be needed. You are entirely correct when you say that all of the presentation could have been managed by entirely muggle means. In fact, this was the case - literally. The Ministry was insistent that everything to do with the making and promoting of the project had to be accomplished by means available to any ordinary muggle - or at least appear to be so. The ability to control what we term, 'magic' is present in everyone, but in most people it is so imperfect as to be hardly noticeable. In just a few members of the population it is there to a degree which makes it very obvious to everyone around them. This usually happens from the age of about ten or eleven years. Dear Arnold (if I may), In answer to your several questions, I can tell you that I work and live in Britain and I shall try to answer your queries as far as I can, and as far as I am allowed, but there are strict limits on the information I am permitted to make public. Also, there will usually be a lapse of time before I can reply to you. My other commitments at the school are only part of my day-to-day activities, and I have limited time to answer questions. If I may make a suggestion: ask just one question at a time, and I will find it easier to answer, just as you will find it easier to see which of my answers matches which of your question! Prof Petros , from which of these birds should I take the tail feather to get the same power as phoenix tail feather : 1 : Golden eagle 2: Harpy eagle 3: Harris' hawk 4: Pheasant
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
An interesting question: The important thing to understand here, is that you must never *take* a tail feather from any bird; it has to be given, or it will be of no use, rather like the wood from a wand tree. Secondly, different feathers - even from the same bird - will have slightly (or considerably) different results, when used in a wand. Thirdly, the way in which the wand is made - including who makes it - also has a significant effect, as does the person who uses it. So, no one bird will give a feather which results in exactly the same 'power' as one taken from a particular phoenix, which is why it is necessary that your own wand be made by an honest, reputable maker, and is suited to your own personality. The closest match you are likely to find to a phoenix, however, would be the Bennu.

My dear Mr. Trecker, Full marks for the largest number of questions in one session, which I shall try to answer: Super abilities and making projectiles from one's body parts are pure fantasy, and cannot be achieved either with, or without, magic. I'm afraid I cannot, even if I knew the answer, pin-point the location of a phoenix in any part of the word, as they are classified as a protected species, and classified under Group A, as laid down under the regulations pertaining to magical organisms. They are strictly 'off limits,' and though this does not prevent a phoenix from attaching itself to a particular human being, they can never be kept as 'pets' - i.e. against their will. My thoughts on a world without greed, corruption and the various miseries which one human being can inflict upon those around him are, I imagine, no different from your own: i.e. that we are better off without them, and that no intelligent person would have anything to do with such things or the people with whom they are associated. Your thoughts on magic are, essentially, perfectly correct. It is present in everyone and everything, to a greater or lesser degree. It is only a question of degree which makes one person overtly magical and another not so. I am not surprised to read that you are a friend of Sam. (Hopefully, the rest of his name is not to be taken seriously!)

@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
As I have explained, previously, you cannot take a feather from a phoenix in the same way in which you cannot cut wood from a wand tree. The feather has to be found, discarded by the bird. Only then will its magical properties be useful. So-called 'dark' magic is a very real phenomenon, and, yes, anyone can be in danger from it. 'Science' in the broadest sense, is the study of 'knowledge,' so it is a very non-specific term. Scientific knowledge advances every day, and it is possible that at some stage, scientific study will explain much that we take as 'supernatural' now. But I very much doubt if science will ever be able to explain 'magic' just as it is unlikely to be able to explain 'love' or 'loyalty' or a belief in God, or why one person likes opera and another cannot stand the idea! Some things cannot be accounted for, logically. So, I would have to agree with your suggestion that 'magic' will always remain outside of human comprehension. Your message was brought to my attention during our morning break, but I really must go, now, or I shall be late for my next class!

Professor, what do you do in alchemy ? Is it concerned with turning lead into gold and making a philosopher’s stone or can we do much more ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
I am limited in what I allowed to say in answer to that question, Sam, but I can confirm that turning lead into gold was a misconceived ambition of some of the earlier experimenters in what came to be known as 'alchemy'. We certainly do not recognise them, now, as alchemists, though their early attempts did lead others along a more fruitful path. Alchemical Studies - as a school subject - deals with the basic principles of the nature of materials, both living and dead, natural and man-made, and the way in which they react and influence each other and the human beings, plants and animals around them. For instance, Tom's relationship with what we might reasonably call *his* wand-tree would fall within that subject. His presence had an influence on the tree, and it its turn, the tree would undoubtedly have modified Tom's perception and guided his thinking in a certain way. That would probably explain how he came to perform the complex magic of core insertion; something which should have been beyond a person of his age, experience, and ability. Equally, the manner in which the manticore skin, the wand, and Tom, influenced each other, when he attempted disapparition in the way in which he did, is another example. Alchemical Studies is a very wide and complex area of interest and there are many who have spent their lives in investigating it.

Dear Sam, In this case, I use the word, 'episode', to mean a period in my life when something happened, not in what I am told it has come to mean to some people: one of a series of presentations like this one. So I am afraid that a 'link', as you call it, is not possible. As for inserting wand cores, this can only be done by the use of magic, and a very specialized kind at that - which is why we have wand-makers in the first place!

There is little danger of Bowtruckles being discovered by a Muggle - or anyone else for that matter. This is partly because they are inherently shy creatures, confining themselves to the topmost branches of wand trees and partly because of their natural camouflage, closely resembling, as they do, the twigs of the tree in which they live. For these reasons, the Ministry has never had occasion to be concerned that a Muggle will, as you put it, 'stumble' across a colony of bowtruckles.

Apologies for having, it seems, missed your question. You will know if you have any significant magical ability by the signs of its uncontrolled or weak appearance. If, for instance, you can cause something light, like a piece of paper, to move slightly, just by thinking about it. If you do have true magical ability, it will show in the end.

Dear Sam, I am not certain of the outcome, were you to change the name of the plant. I imagine that there would be some change, but as spells and enchantments are nearly always quite specific, I cannot say what that change would be. On the other hand, it is only by experiment that new spells are developed and old ones improved. (I can remember a time when manticore skin was widely used in all manner of spells, but now its uses are so limited that it can be discounted as a serious ingredient.) So ... if you like, try the change, and see what happens! I cannot image that you would be in any danger from this simple charm.

Prof. Petros , HUMAM HUMAM used lavender oil as a core and the wand worked properly . How do you think he inserted it even though he was a Muggle ?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
Dear Sam, You are assuming that Humam Humam is a 'muggle' as you call it. If he has inserted lavender oil into a wand and it is successful, then, clearly, he is something more. He may or may not think he has a non-magic personality, but to carry out such a task is advanced magic. Regarding the method which Tom used to insert his core, it is, as you would expect, only by the use of magic that this can be carried out, and, as stated in the presentation, we are not allowed to show this, which is why that part of the process was deliberately left vague! Tom's story was put here, only to draw attention to the fact that the world of magic is real, and to show how a non-magic person could make a non-working wand, using only 'muggle' tools.

@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 4 жыл бұрын
As a rule of thumb (pardon the allusion!) it has been noted that a person's wand usually turns out to be three to four times the length of their longest finger. But this may have no significance at all, and it is true that there are many exceptions. It is more the use to which the wand is put, which determines its length.

If you were referring to woodlice, Mr. MacDonald, they are not in any way magical, though they are a common ingredient in many magical concoctions (usually, but not always, of a cosmetic nature. @ProfPetros

Wood lice, though commonly mistaken for insects, are actually crustacea (the only land-dwelling crustacea, in fact) and related to the shrimps and prawns. If you wish to find out more about them, I suggest you investigate 'Oniscidea,' in any of your muggle text-books. Wood lice as such, do not possess any magical properties. They are mentioned in the presentation as being a treat for Bow Truckles (or Twigmummers, as we call them in this country ('mummer' being a corruption of the old English word, 'mimna,' meaning 'forest dweller.') Regarding your other remark, I am not so pessimistic. The main reason for the non-acceptance of the magical world by the non-magical is an understandable reluctance to believe in something which has been presented as impossible. Once this is overcome, difficult though that will be, I think acceptance will quickly follow.

Virtually any wood is capable of being used in a wand, though some are more suitable than others, of course. The native species of a country (in England, for example, this would be oak, or beech, or holly) would all be good options. Sycamore is often used in Italy, as that is its country of origin. Sycamore in a wand can be a very attractive, giving the wand an almost white, appearance. As a 'rule of thumb' harder, denser woods are more difficult to make and more demanding of the wizard, but are usually more powerful in their effect than softer, more fibrous timbers.

Any wand is best suited to one kind of wizard, and (if the match is a good one and given enough time) that wand will become suited to that one individual wizard. If a wand then passes into the hands of another wizard, its effectiveness will be lessened. If the match happens to be a good one, then, again in time, the wand will work well. If not, it will never be so good and may, in extreme cases, be quite unreliable.

I can give you just one example. If you have innate magical ability, you should, by the time you reach your early teens, be able to move small objects (such as rolling a pencil) without touching them. AN interesting question. 'Astral Projection' (or 'Telesentience' as we sometimes term it) has never been proven, because there has never been a case of an actual, verifiable result effected by this means. (For example, no-one has managed to move so much as a feather, whilst in the state of Telesentience.) So I am afraid that this cannot be considered a magical ability - if it actually exists at all.

Is there a magic abilities Different from moving objects without touching them? And why do you refuse to give clear answers?

I'm afraid I cannot be clearer than my last answer. Astral Projection, as you term it, cannot be seen as a magical ability. I gave you one example of a magical ability (that of moving objects) but of course there are many others - transforming the shape of one thing into another, causing something to disappear (at least in the mind of the viewer) influencing the course of events, and so on. I will always try to answer any questions or comments, but there are strict limits on the level of detail I can reveal, and, of course, limits to my time. I have other duties and responsibilities, as you might imagine. Speaking of which, I really must go now, or my third-year alchemical class will be getting into all sorts of mischief, I have no doubt!

I am not familiar with the Indian Magnifera tree, but if my understanding is correct, I think it comes from the same family as ivy, and ivy is too fibrous to be turned into a successful wand, so it is possible that the Magnifera will have the same defect. But this is only an educated guess on my part. You would have to ask someone from that region for a more definitive answer.

@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 5 жыл бұрын
Apologies for having only now had your question brought to my attention. (At the school, we have been rather involved in Trellin week, which lasts for almost 14 days, as you would expect!) The silver shaker is used to distribute the powdered core material along the wand, prior to its incorporation into the wand body to form the core. Any shaker would do, but this particular one, having been used so many times for the same purpose, and being goblin-made, has a retained memory, rather like bending a piece of wire into a certain shape. It just works more effectively.

Professor, can you please tell me the cores that are easily accessible to muggles?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 6 жыл бұрын
Finding a core is not really the problem. For instance, you could use the tail hair from a horse or even human hair, but it would have to be a magical horse and the hair would have to come from someone with really extraordinary magical powers. (Some wizards have tried to use their own hair, only to find it did not work at all, as the powers within the hair were exactly the same as their own, and so they were no further forward and could do no more than they could do, even without a wand.) Then again, the insurmountable problem for a 'muggle' (we do not really use that term, but I know what you mean) is the magic needed to insert the core into the wand. It has to form part of the very substance of wand in a magical way; merely being inside the wand is not enough.

@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 5 жыл бұрын
Certainly, magical abilities can be used for all sorts of purposes, some of them dangerous, either to the practitioner or others - or both. Equally, there must be cases in which someone with innate magical ability is not contacted when young. With so many in the world, it would be remarkable if this did not happen, occasionally, though I have no experience of it myself. I do recall, many years ago, reading something about a sect which denied any form of magic in their community. When faced with one of their number who had undeniable magical power, they taught that person that it was wrong and to be suppressed, which led to a great deal of internal tension and unhappiness. Frequently, such people were either cast out, or left of their own will. So, you see, if a person does have magic within them, it would be very unusual if it did not show itself very obviously, and they would be bound to be noticed.

Thank you. Can it be harmful when someone is not contacted, or would that person be able to live on with his or her normal life?
@ProfPetros
@ProfPetros 5 жыл бұрын
@@wishuponastar9933 My guess is, that like so many of life's challenges, it would entirely depend on their family circumstances. Presumably, if the family and friends of such a person accepted their occasionally unusual behaviour or abilities as 'normal' that is just what it would be: part of their character and hardly noticed. The reverse would also be true, of course.
