Hi Hilary. Your videos are very good and very clear. In this, your first video of the “making papier-mâché beads” series, you mention that if you want SMOOTH beads, you then need to use papier-mâché paste. How would you make those to be round? Would I be able to make them perfectly round just with my hands? I ordered the papier-mâché paste from Amazon and I thought I was going to get a powder which I would prepare, but instead I got the finished paste. I don’t have a zipper bag to store it closed so it won’t dry. Do you have another suggestion for storing it? The paste I bought is from the brand Rayher and it says “The finest papier-mâché.” But it also says, “Air-drying porcelain-white modeling material for fine porcelain objects.” Do you think it is the right product and indeed papier-mâché? Or did I get porcelain by mistake? Do you think I can also microwave it dry? If so for how long? If not, how do I know when it is completely dry and ready to paint if I air-dry it? Thank you for your tutorials and refreshing character.

Thank you for your questions. I used the same make of pre-made papier-mache paste when I buy it. I think it's excellent. I don't try to make perfectly round beads but they do look pretty good all the same. Simply by using your hand you will get better and better. I do let them air dry and I also dry them in a microwave oven - both work. Only a few seconds - 5 to begin with and see how it goes. I repeatedly open the door to let out the steam - it depends on how many you're making. I think you will know when they're completely dry - the have a completely different sound when you put a few in your closed hand and shake them together. I used acrylic inks to paint them as it's water resistant. And I like the fluidity. Yes the paste does harden if the packet is left open. I wrap it with a damp J Cloth or similar and put it in a plastic bag and wrap it up as much as possible to keep the air out. This tutorial was a request by Blue Peter the BBC TV programme - I haven't checked to see which country you're in. I was considering being their resident Granny Round the Kitchen Table - an idea for a slot on their channel. I think it's a nice idea and may do it in the future. P.S - There may well be papier-mache paste that's waterproof. This isn't. But they can be cleaned carefully with a damp cloth. I hope this helps. Best of luck. Best Wishes Hilary

@@HilaryBravo Thank you so much Hilary for your answers. I am writing to you from a village in Málaga Spain. We have many British visit our village as well as some wonderful British neighbors and friends. I also belong to a UK weight loss internet site so I chat with a few British ladies there. Going back to the bead topic: I played with the paste today and made beads with my ten year old daughter. It was great. I have them air drying a bit and will microwave them tomorrow as I tried to microwave three today and the plate left a mark on the side on which they were laying on. I will solve that with fine sand paper but since I would prefer not to have to do that to all of them, I will attempt to microwave them when the outside has air dried a little bit more. I attempted to buy the white ink as you suggested on your video but I received fountain pen cleaner instead. I have to check my order perhaps I selected the wrong item by mistake. I may have to take on calligraphy now. 🤣 haha I also bought some iridescent acrylic paint. I didn’t know the reason you bought ink is because it is waterproof. I bought varnish to cover them with after I paint them with the iridescent paint and perhaps that will allow the work to last longer. I also thought about covering them with resin and bought Resin Pro’s transparent resin but I am not sure if I do use that if I have to dip it or what. I don’t find any of your papier-mâché and resin videos. I don’t know the reason why? Have you uploaded some already?? I will check again in case it is some of the plate and other objects videos. I haven’t watched those yet. What area of England do you live in that has beach AND river and shoreline as you mentioned in one of your videos? I live in the mountains of Málaga and it takes me an hour just to get down to the foothills and near the beach. But the beach here is developed for tourists and the land is arid and I miss lush foliage and virgin beaches like I had when I lived in South Florida, USA. (I was raised there). My husband sometimes considers moving to England so our daughter can learn better English than what she is learning here but my mood suffers with grey skies. But I don’t know if all of England tends to have great skies. Also i don't know if it snows in all of England. I assume it does but I haven’t asked my British friends here in our village. I want to live closer to a beach with a virgin landscape, so I could hear the birds etc. Please let me know if you have indeed already uploaded videos using resin and papier-mâché and perhaps their names because when I type in your name to find your channel, I am not finding them!!!!?? The reason I am doing the papier-mâché is because although I love the look of semi-precious stones… I have been seeing the disaster to the earth that the miners cause to collect the stones and i am a little reluctant to using them anymore. although i have to admit they are beautiful. But the papier mache paste is very therapeautic to work with. My daughter says she likes the texture better than clay. I am aldo eager to painting the beads tommorow! Thank you again for your reply. I think the granny 'round the kitchen table is a great idea… go for it.

I hope to find time over our Bank Holiday long weekend to make the next tutorial. I'm away from my studio quite a bit, certainly rather a lot during this last week. I went back to Chagford to take some more photos of some of the beautiful headstones in the churchyard and published them on my Instagram account @hilarybravo. I put lots of inspirational posts there and share my methods.

Lovely to see a new project Hilary 🥰 What’s that paper mache recipe you’re using? Is it just brown paper pulp and glue? You usually mix it with sawdust and chalk powder? I keep meaning to try this recipe 👍
@HilaryBravo
@HilaryBravo 6 ай бұрын
It is simply a pre-formed Amazon packing - it's really ready made papier mache. I added some PVA after I had soaked it, whisked it up with a hand held electric blender and sieved most of the water out. Even though it is a much wetter mix than I usually use it has dried out to a very hard crisp base to work on. Thank you Alex - I'm really glad to be back. All the recipes work very well.

Thanks for your advice. I hadnt thought of using lining paper, to make a mould (which must be stronger than news paper cuttings, What I want to do is take a mould of a sculpture made of foam,(which is life sized but I;'m worried about it sticking,& not coming off, can you or any one else offer any advice? someone suggested using petroleum jelly, people don't seem to make papier mache moulds on you tube

I haven't just in case they stuck to the wooden sticks. mmm could try it and see. I imagine there would need to be some kind of releasing agent on the sticks. Could be Vaseline. I will try it out.

I asked this.... Why are there so many old pipes in the Thames? Considered to be the cigarettes of their day, clay pipes were often pre-filled with tobacco and sold by shops for a single use before they were discarded. It is no wonder that thousands of clay pipes are still found along the Thames foreshore where workers would smoke as they went about their business. Jun 17, 2019 amazing. single use.

just love it. and the idea of a "backdrop board" which makes so much intuitive sense to me, but I never quite thought of it. long ago had a large and low tabletop i painted in some kind of combination of malechite and marble, and it worked so beautifully, my very first go at such stuff. And just looking at it inspired me to create, so i am thinking it was a sort of backdrop table.

It's still Lockdown and I'm making a new series of tutorials etc for my KZbin Channel. Also I'm working behind the scenes - learning how to create 'How To Tutorials' for my new Patreon platform and will be putting excerpts from them here on KZbin too. There's a kind of Time Warp that seems to be happening during lockdown - here in the South West of England everywhere is very quiet and it's winter though quite a mild one so far. I've had lots of time to think about what I can do. I've lost a great deal of my income along with millions of others and so I'm putting my energy into vastly improving my Teaching Platform here and on Patreon. My intention is to have only one tier and keep it at £5 per month. For that I'm going to try to share everything I've learned in my area of papier-mache plus added videos that I hope will convey some of the beauty of where I live in what is called An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - it really is. Also I love beach-combing and collecting natural objects and have always liked to experiment with jewellery that I make from them. My intention is not to show you how to make very quick vessels and pieces of jewellery but to show how to create things of beauty, originality and quality that will become heirlooms for you to pass on. Inspiration is everywhere but sometimes we may need a few sign posts to find it so I'll bring those along too. I plan to have at least one Papier-Mache Vessel and one Jewellery Tutorial every month plus 'Sign Posts' and 'Out and About' videos. It will evolve as we go.
