I took a look today, I went to the aircraft museum 1st and enjoyed WW2 Harrington & the SOE operations conducted from there, "Carpet Baggers" and US Air Force. I later put my running gear on, had a walk to where you are filming, took some photo's, then ran 5k or three miles and ran a trail run. There was another guy taking a look, also a man and lady who were struggling to find the site. Worth a look. Gosh, all that work and massive concrete structures for a four year of use base. Thank God Cuba didn't develop into WW3, these would have been fired against probably Poland or East Germany, maybe even toward Moscow

Manchester airport is connected to Stanlow on the Wirral by pipe. That’s why it has stayed operational. Unlike Grangemouth that was far bigger but wasn’t part of the network.

As a schoolboy I lived a few miles from Brieghton airfield which housed Bloodhound missiles and Thor. The Bloodhounds were said to defend RAF Finningley where Vulcan Bombers were housed. Every day we would see Vulcans fly overhead coming and going on their patrols over the North Sea.

Intact, I took a big interest in Grafton airbase and did a lot of research leading to my final video a few years ago. I went to visit Grafton Underwood in 1966. The runways and all the buildings were still there. Mum took me to dad’s barracks. A farmer lived in the control tower. Dad met mum at the 3 Cocks Inn, and he would ride his bicycle to Kettering to visit her. I was very blessed to see it still there. Awesome video and work! Thank you for keeping it alive!

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video. I am so jealous you got to see this airbase still in its original form. I would have loved to have seen this site back in the day. I am very fortunate to live not far away and make regular visits, only to see the undergrowth gradually taking over. I am glad I managed to at least capture some it before it finally disappears. Thanks again for your truly interesting visit way back in the 60's. Best wishes. Kim 😊

Hi Peter, thank you so much for the very interesting information and history of your father’s stay here during WW2 and at Grafton Underwood. I am always so fascinated in the history of this particular Airfield and the airmen and women who served at Grafton and surrounding airfields close by. Walking around this old airbase, one cannot help but imagine how it looked and felt all those years ago. Even to this day , people find old relics left behind by personnel. I am very grateful for your input to add to this remarkable airbase history. John Francis will be remembered for all time and I feel quite humble to have been contacted by his son. Thank you.🙏. Best wishes. Kim

Great video! The concrete pillar is a Trig Point and a theodolite could be mounted in the grooved gun metal ring on top for surveying and lining up to other trig points. I'm from Derbyshire and we have loads but I believe the first one was at Cold Ashby. Must get out and explore some of the places you visit , thanks for the inspiration. The embedded hooks were for transport 'cause they are chuffing heavy.

Hi Ian, thank you so much for watching the video. Yes you’re correct about the concrete pillar and our untrained eye should have realised this. Not sure when these ordinance markers were erected, but I am sure we saw a photo of them being used as a flag pole base, even though their purpose was for entirely different reasons. Anyway, so glad you popped by and enjoyed the video. Best wishes, Kim 👍

It was a good read and definitely made this base come to life a bit more for me.

We had a holiday caravan at Flamborough from 1956 to 1967. We used to drive past RAF Driffield where they were based from 1959 to 63 as well as Carnaby near Bridlington. What a sight they were when erected for maintenance or practice countdowns in full view from passing traffic. They normally lurked out of site in their shelters. Three white rockets pointing to the sky. I'm glad there have been a couple of books published in the last few years and that two sites survive as well as input on KZbin. Few people nowadays realise missiles were based here or that the RAF also had over 100 nuclear V Bombers at the time.

My father was on a US Army Air Corp (Air Force) Base during W W 2 and he ran a ware house on the base in England. And he said the bombers would take off in the morning and come back at night and some of them would be on fire. For some reason I never asked him where in England this base was or what it was called and since he died in 2013 I can't ask him anything now. After we defeated Germany he was furloughed back to Indiana. While back home the US atom bombed Japan and that was the end of the war. Daddy told me that he was going to be re-deployed out to the Pacific to fight but that never happened and he never left home again. A few years later he got married and I was born.

Kelmarsh was the end of the pipeline, so its not as if anything runs through the site which might warrant secrecy. The site is unmanned and unprotected so you can be sure it is truly disused. If there was any hint of activity H&S would be all over it. So why the secrecy with the FOI request? My guess is it still on a list, someone forgot to get it off the list, so an FOI admin says, it's on the list so we will not comment. There are lots of places like this where the site status is way out of date. On the other hand, the old GPSS is alive and kicking though some under another name. There is even a location where you can put your ear against the pipe and hear the aviation kerosene on its way to Heathrow.

There was some activity about 12 months after this video being released involving night activity and road closures at this site.? Why I haven't a clue but does fire up the old imagination some what.
