When other enemy countries realize that an F35 is up in the air, they know the jig is up. They run and try to hide. 😅

Thanks to Sean Mahany for such a great video. I would like to see a video on the disassembling and transport of these aircraft. It would be great subject matter for say...The History Channel. My father was on the aircrew of a PBM Mariner (U-boat hunting) seaplane during WWII and my brother was a Navy Aviation Electronic Technician attached to a squadron of Super Constellations (Willie Victors) out of Danang AFB in Vietnam. My father retired as a a civilian from Dover AFB in Delaware where he worked on everything from a C-124, C-133, C-141, C5A Galaxy and so on. Meanwhile, I was on the commissioning crew of the first 688 class Attack submarine built by Electric Boat in New London Connecticut. It's a shame that there are no PBM Mariner seaplanes on display on the East Coast. God Bless.

I only saw the F-14 fly once, I was visiting Miramar, San Diego from Australia and these two A-4 Skyhawks flew over being chased by two F-14s. Crazy just how big those things are. 🇦🇺

Awesome video, such a badass aircraft. What a marvel of engineering for its time. Really enjoyed hearing from his perspective, he is so genuinely passionate and obsessed with the aircraft I cannot imagine there is another pilot with more first hand knowledge about the F-14 than him. Thanks for this awesome video!

A little correction for the start. The D model had the tracking camera system and the IR system. That is why it kinda looks like the double barreled shotgun. The A and B models have just a single tube like chin mount that held the tcs which was a high powered camera to allow for viewing targets visually at a greater distance. Every tomcat has a chin mount. The difference is the D will have a double while the A and B is a single.

My fellow old farts have approached the museum several times asking to repaint the RF-4B. About five years ago the guys descended on MCAS Miramar and painted our RF on display there. Seems a shame, would not cost the museum a dime to have a nicely restored plane. We ain't getting any younger. Phantoms Phorever.

I hope that I understand correctly, but the F-14 was a maintenance beast requiring more hours to keep it in flying condition than its replacement(s). Having said that, I still love it as it showed true flying beauty. (Well, okay, I love the SR-71 more but that's a different aircraft type comprised of mostly raw speed.)

Correction: The F-14 normally shot 50 round bursts from the gun, not 500 round bursts. The F-14 only carried 675 rounds of 20mm.

Nicely done Rhino. Rhino and I had a LOT of time in the F-14 together especially in the Persian Gulf off off the Kitty Hawk. 8 hour flights with 2 trips to the tanker in between CAP over Iraq then trapping back at the boat at night made for a long day at the office. There may have been a night bolter or two but he always got us back home safe and for that I am thankful. He was and still seems to be sleeper-smart and as division leads we had quite a bit of responsibility on our shoulders in a squadron (VF-51) that had extremely high standards. I'm sure you remember the cluster F*** at Dharan coming in with 4 Tomcats on a low viz evening and the approach controller froze up so we had to flex and took separation via DME and the AWG9's watching the cranes pass down our right side - that was not a walk in the park. Thanks for passing on your knowledge to a youngster when we were crewed together, you definitely still pass your systems exams, nicely done and cheers. ~ Elvis

My closest friend was a retired Master Chief, ATC. We spent many great days walking around the back 40. Over at the Sailplane airport on Beulah Church Road, the old fellow running the club was my CO when I went through Pensacola. He took my wife up for her birthday. Back on the back 40 another day, an OV-10 was being prepped to display as a BlackPony. We strapped my wife in the front seat so she could see what I did for a living. The Naval Aviation Museum is a magic place. If you haven’t been go soon and take the family.

I lived in Columbus when they were making the A-5s and regularly tracked their sonic booms as they did flights over Columbus. The plane there is the recon version of the A-5, which was the first plane over the target and the last plane over the target on missions in Viet Nam. The North American magazine had comments about the ability of the cameras at 60,000 feet being able to see a golf ball. On NAA Family Day in 1957 I saw the final test drop of one of the production birds before delivery. They regularly landed over our house landing at Port Columbus. Awesome!

I was salvage chief at Oceana 97-2000. I'll bet nobody has had more Tomcats on a sling under a crane than me. When I returned to sea on Ronald Reagan, I watched them try to hoist a Tomcat with an incorrectly built sling. I spotted it immediately and had GSE rebuilding the sling before anyone got hurt.😮

I was a flight deck director from 86-2012. I loved working with Tomcats and have about a thousand Tomcat stories. What he was talking about getting into the engine cans: I once had a blueshirt skating from work and napping in the tailpipe. We didn't know it until we pushed the aircraft tail over water on the fantail. He was in there screaming bloody murder. We didn't hear him until we had the aircraft chained down, the tractor broke off and we were all walking away. The Tomcat was by far the heaviest plane on the deck. They would bend towbars and slide all over the place during rough seas. Fly 3 is Tomcat country and back there the skid is the most worn because of the wires. Tough place to earn a living. The alpha Tomcats made it super hot too. Always in burner during cyclic ops.

question is, if these museums had the significant funds needed to haul an A-3 a their facility and to restore it over there? All that cost for a plane 99% of visitors have ZERO interest in?

I watched a few R A5C take-off and land from a few of the conventionals in 64-65 while part of the screen in the Tonkin. At the time, they were the hottest aircraft in the fleet. This was before the F4s, and the Navy was still flying F8 Crusaders along with A1, A3, and A4s. All the "old" stuff! At night, while in the plane guard position on takeoff, all you could see was what appeared to be a set of owl eyes rising vertically until they just disappeared. Awesome sight! I also had a chance to walk around the Luke AFB static display and their "T6 Texan" had a tail hook on it which tells me it was a Navy SNJ.
