I just bought a Fenix 8 and right out the box syncng in with my phone crash the watch and that's it blue triangle of death. There's something in Garmin software that effs up the watch and they won't do anything about it. So sending it back. This is the third or fourth watch I've had this issue with and it's all the new watches. The Garmin connect app crashes the watch.

My dark side of running that nobody talks about is running to the bathroom. During training season, I would discover certain foods that would make me immediately have to go number two without warning. The restroom could be just a few feet away and even so there was no holding it. I would take note of what I ate and make sure that to eat those foods before my runs. I never had an issue on race day but have heard of some runners having issues on Wednesday. Heard some horror stories. I was training in the winter so I had pants when it happened so did it make any messes besides my own. After it happened I discovered that it was totally exhausted and week.

@jillousa definitely, no one ever let me know about the "code brown" in running until I started finding out for myself while training for a half marathon. I now keep an emergency brown issue packet in my running vest, and I try to make sure I know where any public restrooms are on my route and watch my food intake before runs. 😂

The trail and ultra community has been built on trust. Which means some will abuse the system unfortunately. It's a minority. And I'd rather be part of a trust based community than a 'police state'. Does it annoy me to see cheating? Yes! Will I report? Probably not.... Well it depends on what I guess. Course cutting, I'd probably say something if it's flagrant. But the more common ones like a pacer muling gear, aid outside of A/S, not having all mandatory gear - I'll let it go. Sure, it's annoying...but I won't say a thing if a mid packer does any of those things. Cheating at elite level is different. It doesn't affect me but it's of course unfortunate. I'm surprised you didn't mention doping. In a sport where there's virtually no testing (except at some races - but that's easy to dodge since you know it's coming), and you have a suspicious influx of athletes from a sport notorious for doping.... the lack of doping scandals is not explained by lack of doping but rather lack of serious control. I'm not saying everyone is doping of course, but to say that nobody is... that seems extremely unlikely. Why would trail running be the only sport without doping?
@motivationtheoryrunning17 сағат бұрын
Hey Simon, awesome to see you here and I completely agree with what you just said here. Our sports is built on trust and the love of nature and running… I think the next real threat that’s already here is doping… And obviously at the elite level.

Yeah, I can think of 2 races where I'm pretty sure people didn't go the full distance. One was an out-and-back trail race where a pair of runners didn't go to all the way to the turn-around (it was obvious), and another where a runner was behind me but somehow managed to finish way ahead of me. Perhaps I just imagined it. As a DFL runner in several races I almost don't care anymore. Unless they are claiming a podium place they are only cheating themselves in the end. What makes me mad are the people who claim an ultra or marathon was "easy". Like they did it with little or no training.
@motivationtheoryrunningКүн бұрын
😂😂 I have never finished an ultra and thought “that was easy”

Good video. I have def been annoyed at rule breakers of "no pacers until x miles" or "no poles until certain point". I did experience once where I was doing fairly well in a 45mile race and i had passed a guy on the last long loop while also passing others and all of a sudden towards a middle crossing Aid Station, guy is now coming from wrong direction to enter it and then leaves it towards finish line...messed me up mentally for the rest of the race (my issue). Last point, Strava is not as big as people think. I've never used it and have finished many ultras and have little reason to care to use it tbh.
@HNXMediaКүн бұрын
It's not just the "time cheaters" I hate, it is the seemingly innocuous "rule cheaters." I ran a 50 miler that was a qualifier for a larger race and the rule was "No Music/No Headphones." This was the pre-wireless earbud era. So many people got out of sight of race officials and put on their headphones. I did see one get caught and DQ'd, but so many just blatantly violated the rule. I hate that type of thing. Now, yeah, I thought it was a stupid rule too, but I obeyed it - 50 miles with nothing but your own thoughts. That was more challenging than the distance. Hey race officials, don't make a rule that you cannot or will not enforce!
@motivationtheoryrunningКүн бұрын
I agree about the earbuds earphones thing too if it’s a rule follow it. But I’ve seen why it is an issue because it is for safety and communication. I’ve seen in the Marine Corps marathon where wheelchair participants were screaming at runners to get out of the way because the runners could not hear them telling them to make way so they can get by… Other runners actually had to go over to them and physically move them.

My most fulfilling achievements are largely un-recognized. I do, however, understand and appreciate the competition and comparison element and those who enjoy these aspects of any activity. Cheating has always been a baffling psychology to me. The only thing that 1/2 way makes sense to me is the thrill component. I just don't get it?
@motivationtheoryrunningКүн бұрын
Agree! I feel like people who cheat and or fake stuff when it comes to running, probably really admire people who are very accomplished… But lack the ability or drive to actually do it. They just want to somehow bask in the same recognition they think the other people get.
@quengmingmeowКүн бұрын
A couple things: 1. I hate cheaters, not just in running. Test cheaters, card game cheaters, relationship cheaters….it doesn’t matter. The cheater is taking advantage of people following the rules and they know it. And they don’t care. So anyone looking to expose these people are saints in my view. Good people need to take a stand against these people and public humiliation should just be just the warm up. 2. Particular to Boston qualifying, I think the races that serve as qualifiers should pass a much higher bar to serve as a qualifying race…in the form of more timing mats and pictures. My “hometown marathon” is the Columbus Marathon, and I can tell you it would be easy to cheat this course by getting a ride from mile 14 to just before mile 20. There’s a timing mat at 13.1 and one at 20. The back half of the course--especially miles 18 and 19 have virtually no one out there because it’s in a quiet interior suburb. There has to be lots of BQ races like this where people cheat.

Agreed! I like to operate my life around people with integrity because of people find it OK to cheat and something like this. What else are they capable of?

We had a pair of twins cheating on the Comrades Ultra, they swapped halfway but were caught by their watches begin on different arms. I've heard that in Europe you are allowed to take 'short' shortcuts over the course in places where the trail might zig-zag up or down a mountain and then you are aloud to take shortest route.
@motivationtheoryrunningКүн бұрын
I did read about that! Also I have also heard that in Europe, you’re allowed to take the shortest path down. Let’s see a mountain while here in the US. You’re expected to stay on trail no matter you can’t cut the switchbacks… that may have a lot more to do with the integrity of the trail itself to not ruin the trail by going off the trail

For me right now I think that 30 km is a very big achivement and thats why my limitations just are in the way so I really must be carefull if I just run 14 kms I must take a break and take care of my stomi or I must be aware not to trip over because my osteoporosis might cause a fracture very easily. Thats my biggest concerns if I shall run very far. I wouldnt either be low in sugar because my bloodsugar level can sometimes drop down to a dangerous point under 3.0 mmol and it happens very quickly......so there are these issues I must find a way to handle if I want and if i am able to run "just" 30 kms......I also walk-run when I train because then I can be out for a longer time and I love that......Inga dk.
