This is it John. Get out there and give it all you've got, I know you will. Is this a race we can monitor your progress online throughout the day through a GPS tracker? That would be cool. Anyways, I wish you the best race possible and can't wait to hear about how it went.

Thanks Don. I don’t think there’s any GPS tracking or updates. I’ll have to check. Thanks for the well wishes 1 foot in front of the other.

Was refreshing to find a video like this as I plan my comeback following cancer (and dare I say laziness). I especially appreciate the “run for time” comment. This makes sense. I was always focused on my miles and achieving a good personal time back in my running years but getting back into it, it makes it less stressful to tell myself to say, go for a 10 minute run, regardless of pace or distance. Today will mark day one of my return. 🤘🏻

Wish you all the luck on your journey. I will be transitioning from 1/2 marathon trail races to ultras in 2025 so as you get this process figured out, pass on your nutrition and hydration intake along the way and I will do the same.

I am dead set AGAINST your plan of going out hard. Your night time running will suck much worse, and it’ll be out and out MISERABLE if you attempt to “bank time”. The 2nd commandment of ultra running: there’s no such thing as banking time. Take it at what your normal pace is….your body knows that effort level. Surging harder will throw off your digestion, throw off your water intake, the whole 9 yards. Do what your brain and body knows best…..and if you get to the last 10 miles and have something left in you, then surge st that time. My money is betting you’ll get to the last 10 miles utterly smoked but thanking your lucky stars you didn’t go out like a bat out of hell.
@motivationtheoryrunning5 күн бұрын
Agreed, in Yeti I was fantastic shape the last 15 because of my banking energy not time. I didn’t mean I was gonna go out like a Bat Out of Hell. I mean, I was just gonna try to be more moving better in the areas where I can… This course doesn’t allow for a lot of that unless you’re trying to run through hills and stuff like that which I won’t be😂
@quengmingmeow5 күн бұрын
. I wish you the best in conquering this thing. I don’t mean to come off like a schmuck…..I just don’t want to see any extra suffering than the amount of suffering that has been chosen. Happy Thanksgiving!

Great advice. I'm 56 and have been running mountains since 1993, ultras since 2000. Had one hiccup in 2022 with a minor meniscus tear and 3 months of getting back in running shape, otherwise I've always been healthy. I still have plans on getting after it with more ultras and other big goals in 2025. Your advice of including other training is spot on, and I'd also say MAKE SURE TO LIFT WEIGHTS. Weight lifting must be prioritized especially after 50 because you will lose muscle. Also, I'd add to avoid junk food and eat a lot of protein, and focus on whole unprocessed foods. It makes a massive difference. Get lots of sleep, too.

Another video of yours with nothing but sound and proven advice 👌 I want to thank you whole heartedly for the impact you had on my personal running journey. Having gone frome that out of shape guy in his late 40's, with all sorts of health issues, to running 60k + on my own and hoping to run my first Ultra. This though, was cut short through covid and the last effect of long long-covid that I suffered from for 3 years. Through all of this your channel, personal triumph and tribulations with running, kept me motivated and inspired. Sure there were some other factors, but I'm proud to say I'm fully back in the game , today having rum my 5th trail race in under a year since my last flair-up that left me as good as immobilized, hopeless and having to quit my job. The impact of celebrating, and tracking even the smallest victories, can not be overstated!!! Building on these is what can give you hope. Taking the time to put your physical and mental health first is crucial for progress and success. There's nothing better for me, than being out on the trails and in Nature. Today's progress celebration, was running a fairly challenging 10.64 mile trail race in a time of 1:45:39, and that's despite take a pretty hard spill around mile 9. I'm 53 1/2 now, so it taken some time to get back to this point. Now that the base is back, next year I'll focus more on distance again. For all your fell followers, who might be struggling, I just want to say that, don't give up, if I can come back from where I was, then so can you 💪 ...and this channel is the right place to be!

Where I live I almost always am facing 4 or more hours for race day logistics and I always stress badly over it. Usually to the point of barely or not sleeping the night before the race, especially on longer events like 100 milers. Which just makes the lack of sleep worse. I am slow and will never finish a 100 miler in less than 28 or 29 hours. My saving grace is I seem to handle lack of sleep rather well. At vermont 100 miler this year my son who paced me said he looked back and saw me climbing a wooded section with rocks and tree roots while asleep.
@motivationtheoryrunning13 күн бұрын
Yes the stress and lack of sleep the night before is the worst! lol and the loopy things overnight running does to us😂
