Don't blame Reno or Benteen - Custer split an already inadequate force into three. Reno would have been wiped out if Benteen hadn't come to his assistance. And this isn't an arrogant Brit looking down on Yanks, because 3 years later at Isandlwhana in South Africa we made Custer look like a military genius in comparison. Same problem as the LBH - inadequate knowledge of "native" numbers.....

Both loses were the result of arrogance toward the indigenous peoples. Custer thought that the Indians would have used their usual tactic of a fighting retreat. He had no idea that the Indians were ripe for a battle since they felt that they had defeated another U.S. army at the Rosebud just days earlier. There's no way that Custer would have known this. Isandlwhana was a battle that the Brits should have won but no laager was formed and the units were spread too far apart allowing the Zulus to attack into the British lines once the troops started to run out of ammo. In the end a lot of men died because one government decided to invade the Zulus' land and another felt the Indians needed to be forcibly introduced into modern society.

Custer sent Benteen on a temporary scout. His orders to Benteen included returning to the main command as rapidly as possible. This order was heard by Benteen's subordinate, Lt. Frank Gibson. Why in the world would Custer's last message be addressed to Benteen if he didn't have a clue where he was? Custer expected Benteen to follow orders and return to the command. History is replete with a division of forces prior to a major engagement (e.g. Chancellorsville) with victorious results. Custer knew it was a big village, but he likely did not expect the Indians to stand and fight in the face of cavalry charges. Their numbers were so overwhelmingly superior, Custer simply had no chance.

I was always curious about why cavalry carbines were so small and used reduced loads or really anemic cartridges. I read that the cavalry troopers were really physically small men as the army didn't want the horses loaded to over two-hundred pounds. A trooper could not be over five foot-six or weigh over 140 pounds. Now the officers were a different story as George and Tom Custer were about six-one and very athletic. Another issue was the complete exhaustion of these men and their horses, they had been ridden hard for four days while the Indians had been resting since their Rosebud fight seven days before. Also, the Indians like chief Gall were often physically huge as compared to the troopers.
@NZfabrock

It would be pertinent to mention that the plains indians were not only the larger force but had superior riding skills, physically more robust, superior hunting skills and motivated to defend their women and children. They fought as individuals hunting prey and picked off the bluecoats one by one as if they were deer. I think quite a few had Winchesters and others had outdated mix of rifles and muskets but many fought hand to hand with bow and arrow, spear, clubs, knives and axes. The US trooper didnt have any chance when the real close fighting took place.

@@rogerzucchero2193The battle may not have happened in that case. The natives were constantly moving so a huge issue with this whole series (Custer's main issue- not the series) was that they couldn't find/keep up with them. I think a lot about what Custer could've done and what choices he messed up; ditching the rapiers, leaving a company behind, sending half his men on a reconnaissance; and tactically, he actually had good reasons for his choices. His biggest mistake was not following Benteen's advice ever. Aside from that I agree though, if he had a Gatling gun... the Indian Wars wouldn't be remembered at all, because it would've been so one sided.

@AlternityGM Once again, the single-shot Springfield's had absolutely NOTHING to do with this defeat. They proved more than sufficient for the defense at Reno Hill.

Here's a movie error: when Reno said bugler sound the charge; then when Custer tells his command we caught nappin' there is a different bugler but when Custer gets to last stand hill and orders a skirmish line you see Reno's bugler. So somehow the bugler ended up with Custer instead of Reno😅

Custer apologists will always blame Reno and benteen. Truth is Custer was ultimately responsible because it was his unit. He made the tactical errors that brought about defeat. Custer is at fault...

Why could the Indians not be free? It is their land! It looks like the only way used to put Indians on the reservation was by force not by asking. Let this be a lesson to all that want freedom.

ALEX GILLMOR.

NO iliana, I am not ashamed of Col. Custer. A great hero of the Civil War, and a courageous and resourceful leader on the Plains, George Armstrong Custer's portrait hangs in my den's Gallery Of Great Indian Fighters right between Hernando Cortez and Francisco Pizarro. BTW, Custer was a lifelong Democrat. Gee, they sure don't make them like they used to.

@blacktheknife The Gatling Gun myth. Can you name one engagement of all the Indian Wars in which Gatling guns played any role? They were practically immobile and required an enemy dumb enough to charge directly at them to be utlized. Further, they were being carried by condemned army mules and would have slowed down a cavalry column that needed speed in order to catch the Indians before they could scatter which was the Army's biggest fear.

Reno's men would have been killed to the man had he stayed in the timber line. Indians were already in the timber line when Reno charged ouf of the south part of the timber line, in ranks of 4 with the tell end in disorder. Reno was out numbers near 10 to 1 and that is very long odds to over come in any book. When Reno came out of the timber line the troopers were firing their pistols and broke though the Indian skirmish line to the south.

Custer was let down by Reno....Reno not only lost his head but he failed his commander.A rereading of the Reno court of inquiry shows there was no "ditch" or abandoned river bed. Even Benteen knew that Reno was not fit for command,when Reno came to Benteen on the night of the 25th and proposed to "skip" off and leave the wounded to their fate. Such a proposition was contrary to the maxim of a calvary officer.to Benteen's credit he refused. Reno could should have held his position in the timber

People should seek out and read the following books:- Archaeology , History and Custer's Last Battle by Richard Allan Fox and Red Sabbath - The Battle of the Little Big Horn - by Robert Kershaw - Both authors make it very clear Custer was a fool , his men were tired they had been in the saddle for hours , poor food , no water , no time with their rifles and above all poor leadership . It was no last stand - Custer was overrun - his troops became a rabble with in minutes of contacting the Indians - think of it the Indians had repeating Rifle whereas the troopers has one shot rifles - Custer alone is responsible for his troopers deaths

Let's see unknown number of enemy, told more than he could fight in 1 day, divides command, divides it again, then sub divides what he has left. Custer killed Custer and it is far pass time to give up the ghost on the Reno, Benteen arguments. Benteen is to far away, Reno is righty beat in the valley attack, when they later meet up Custer is a long lose cause. Custer was a gambler and he gambled big and lost big on the Little Big Horn. The Custer luck was gone and as should be the R&B attackers
