I think the issue is that for one, like someone else noted, in the dawn of art there really was just "the sun lights the subject and the sky colors the shadows", so that likely ingrained itself into the teachings of painters. But more so, as a quick and dirty rule it is useful for new artists to get good contrasts in their work. By the time they are ready to more deeply understand color and light, and actually try to parse all that knowledge, they will likely be moving beyond that "rule". So it's really just a way to not overload a new artist's brain and give them something to latch onto for the time being, something they can then expand beyond when they have other fundamentals like their values down. Of course no one will go beyond it without the lessons of how to, so I'm not saying this video shouldn't exist. I just think there is some merit in the simplified "rule" for those starting out.

Not sure why you would think showing pictures of paintings proves your point? The artist could just as easily have stuffed up the concept and gotten it wrong on the art work. Show some photos of real life examples.

dunning kruger is when you think you are more competent than you are but are not that competent. the effect is the inability to see your own incompetence. the other thing where you are good and can not see it, is imposter syndrome

Boy, I can be a perfectionist at time and I wish to strive for imperfection because there aren't such thing as perfect. What art does is more than the look, it's the emotional feel, the substance. When you display what you want to project despise your poor art-style, you did the job right. I admit I am jealous of artists who have better and worst style than me. This is why it is best to drawn for myself and not being pressured by others artists. I made the right choice for leaving DA even if the reason is because of a meme. I believe that art can snap people out of their perfectionist mindset. Nobody is perfect. Embrace imperfection and you will never realize that you are a good artist.

If you are majoring in Art, please don't waste your time. It's very difficult to find a job now. People have some sort of prejudice against art majors, and it's true that you would have a hard time finding a job anywhere.

So enlightening. I struggled with this for the longest time in my paintings. Worked too tight, too hard on myself. Didn't understand yet the concept of the soft edge, the places where a viewers eyes play around and relax... utilize light, shadow and shapes instead ...

Okay so. I honestly barely can relate to the book I feel. I feel like I should be inspired. But it feels alienating. It speaks of the art journey as this joyous thing that you should obsess over and all that. But I just can't relate to it. My journey was and still is painful, frustrating, sometimes confusing, and rage inducing. I have a passion for art, but I am getting this impression that I am just not built for it because I don't have that same innate passion that is being displayed here. Not enough struggle is being shown. The expert voices feel like they want to be encouraging but instead they give off that vibe of "This person was made for art", instead of a person who decided to become an artist and after many trials and pain managed to succeed at getting to the top. At least at the start it tries to say that yeah things will be difficult but it seems to put way more emphasis on just overwhelming amount of work and "just enjoying it" and "just get obsessed" and "just draw". Real "if you aren't born it then you ain't becoming it" vibe with how it seems to dismiss just how grueling this path really is. Also the whole "art reflects who the person is in reality" is a very problematic thing to teach. Especially nowadays as people are actively trying to bring back stigmatization of certain types of subject matter in media, accusing people interested in and creating such things to be a danger to others. That really can mess up horror writers/artists and some of the more taboo subject matter. I should probably go through more of your videos and see if you've had an audiobook that is being more "real" about the journey, or even just a video or two.

Some months ago a friend asked me "if you could choose people for an earth government who would it be?" I didn´t knew any politican or ceos which i was able to imagine as leaders of the world. After a while I said, I think as minister of culture and Art i would choose Bobby Chiu. You are like a godfather of the art world for me. I like yopur attitude and your calmness. It´s just encouraging to hear you talk. One day I hope we will meet in person. Thank you for being here.

Telling the truth is always more better than keeping it quiet and telling it to the other people. You can't possibly expect people to want to deal with you if you lie and even not communicate. It does derail any potential relationships. No amount of trying to blame it on it's just a case of people's personalities being different than yours can make me think otherwise.
