talk about timing. I just purchased (11/24) this tree (15g with 5ft center branches). I had no idea it can get this big. I wanted a dwarf, but the sales person told me my pruning will control the height. That's going to be a big job every year. Good thing I'm retired. What are your thoughts on my approach. Hole= 2x2x2, lots of clay. I back filled the hole bottom with orig dirt-70% mixed with 30% compose from the big box store. This will give the root ball bottom an 8" platform of loose dirt to sit on. The center stalk will be 4-5ft away from the neighbors fence (good neighbor policy??). Finally, back fill the sides with the same dirt ratio as above. Did you place any fertilizer in the hole or sides as you back filled? How often did you water at first. then after a year of growth? BTW, your brickwork was very creative on your slope.
@backyardorcharddreamsАй бұрын
Thx for your feedback! With clay soil you will want to amend it but I now try use very little compost around the roots because I don't what the decomposition happening on the roots. I'm using combinations of sand, fine granite, peat and heavily decomposed organics with about 50% original soil. Regarding your nectarine it will be easier if you stay on top of the pruning every year. It's a great tree and fruit.

Aaah temptation. Having patience is part of growing grafted fruit trees. Just like you said, short term gain, but it could cost the tree. I made that mistake, but it’s so tempting……😢 Grafted trees don’t realize they are so small. The grafted part thinks it’s still part of an established big tree. A seedling mango tree would not try to bloom and fruit at such a young age. So it’s wise to pick off all the small fruit sets until the tree is at least a few years old and of good size first.

Finally got two mango trees just recently. Glad to see your mango's doing so good, it gives me confidence. Do you do anything special to winterize your in ground mango's or even the ones in pots? I worry about this upcoming winter. Are most of your mango's from graft or from seed? I just got ones from seed from the San Bernadino area($25 FB Marketplace). Just planted one in the ground and moved one of my black water barrels next to it, to somewhat block the wind and radiate heat. Was thinking of potting the other one(in a 15 gallon) and plunge it into the ground just in-case I need to move it if it gets to cold, or should I just put both in ground?
@backyardorcharddreams3 ай бұрын
I don't but they don't like our cold below 40. Leaves get damaged and growth stops for my trees. Smart of you to put water barrels next to it or put in a pot. For a small tree, start in a small pot and step it up every year or 2. All mine are grafted but if I had to do it over I might have grown a seedling and grafted varieties I like onto it.

Pruned almost all of my fruit trees. Glad I did it earlier, makes me feel better about them going into winter. Do you do anything with the cuttings? I've seen a few people sell/trade them. I would really like to possibly root my tree cuttings. Seen a few people with success doing stone fruit. I've done it with mulberry's & figs. Might have to try a few times with stone fruit, I just know letting them sit in water in the shade doesn't work (at least for me). Going to try the mini green house method and cut all leaves next time.

Great video. Glad to see your Desert Delight still going strong. I have the same exact variety, but i've been waiting till they go dormant to prune them. Do you think it's better to do it now as opposed to when all the leaves fall off? Ive been kinda waiting till they go dormant for all my fruit trees. Now i'm second guessing. On a side note, ever ordered any plants off of etsy? Seems to be one of the cheapest places to buy fruit trees (just ordered 6.)
@backyardorcharddreams3 ай бұрын
Never have from Etsy. PlantoGram and Everglades Farms. I would prune now so you can get new growth. Go back again when leaves fall off to clean it up. Easier to see stuff like crossing branches without leaves but I would make the major cuts now.

My daughter lives in Hesperia. She has cherries, plums, almonds, and pistashios. She is having trouble with ground squirrels and rabbits who have destroyed everything she plants. Any advise of what to plant, and ways to control these pests? They do get down to 20 degrees.
@backyardorcharddreams3 ай бұрын
Regarding the cold she can grow most stone fruits like cherries, plums, apples and peaches. Great climate for that. Rabbits are probably easier to deal with than squirrels. She can probably place a barrier around small plants to protect against rabbits grazing, but that shouldn't be an issue for most trees. Squirrels can be a major problem for ripe fruit. I not aware of a good solution for them. Thanks for watching!

Another great video. My blackberries got the same type of damage, although it definitely did not produce as much as yours. But i'm guessing it just cause of the short time its been in the ground. My loquats are loving the heat, plus ive been doing a better job of deep watering (letting my hose just sit there for a while). I'm really looking forward to them fruiting, hopefully they do next year (would be the first time). I really want a mango plant. They just seem so expensive compared to the size, plus none of my local nurseries carry them. My passion fruit is doing good as well, almost about 40ft+ long with just one root stem (crazy how big and fast they grow). Plus I seen it starting to produce additional flowers that I hand pollinated (just cause, not needed). Got a pomegranate but its still a baby, but definitely giving new growth. I also want a miracle berry for these meyer lemons that are ripening. But just another hard plant to find local to me. My grapes are still doing really good, I got about 5 grapes bunches from the two grape vines i do have. But I think next time ill cut the bottom bunches so the pests dont get to them. Sorry to hear about your Lychee tree, kinda makes me want to hold off on trying to grow one. Love the updates, the good and the bad. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your video! Quick question... I have a mango tree that I'm looking to plant but have limited space. The best spot is occupied by a small dwarf tangelo tree (it's shorter than the mango tree). Is it ok to plant it about 3 feet away from the tangelo tree or would that be a bad idea? Would like to avoid having to relocate the tangelo if I can. Thanks for your insight!
@backyardorcharddreams4 ай бұрын
That's hard to answer because there's many factors that go into it. For example how are they positioned vs the path of the sun? Will the tangelo get shaded out? Chances are they might both grow but you may be limited the amount of fruit on both - particularly the tree in the shade. If you have limited space that might be a traded off worth it to you. Another idea is move the tangelo to a pot. Citrus (and mangos) grow well and fruit in pots. Thanks for viewing and the question. Hope that helps you.
@farhanarshad10854 ай бұрын
@@backyardorcharddreams Thank you, I really appreciate your thoughtful response. I'm not too concerned about the sun (at least right now) as it's a spot that just gets a ton of sun but is there any concerns that the roots could run into each other and cause problems? Sorry if that's a silly question, just getting started on this journey. Thank you again for your time!
@backyardorcharddreams4 ай бұрын
@@farhanarshad1085 Not a silly question. In most cases I don't worry about the roots in ground. Roots can actually enable trees to communicate and support each other. Virtually everywhere I plant in my yard there's roots. The main thing is to make sure they have sufficient water.

Great video once again. Love looking at your garden cause we have very similar fruits & plants. Plus it always seems like your harvesting right around the same time. My favorite plum variety is the Flavor Grenade Pluot. I enjoy my Santa Rosa, especially cause its a great pollinator. But I recently purchased Dave Wilson Flavor Grenade and was lucky enough to taste the fruit before I purchased it. Tried 3-4 other varieties (not including what I have) and they seemed to be the best taste. I also had a Babcock Peach harvest, which one of my best tasting fruits. My passion fruit definitely flowered and has produce fruit. But I have none that have ripened yet. So still waiting on that. Have you ever done any grafting? My question is where to get the grafts from for other varieties of fruit trees. Doing a video on that would be awesome. I'm still a beginner and would love to graft some of my newly planted trees. Keep up the good work, i'm always watching the videos. Sometimes even multiple times like tonight.
