I share a wrap of a little trip we took to New Brunswick to photograph birds. We went birding along the Bay of Fundy, Grand Manan Island, and White Head Island. Beautiful locations to catch the beginning of shorebird migration in Eastern Canada. Hope you enjoy the video, Happy Birding! I'd like to thank Emily for helping me film and joining me on the trip!

In 1975, my father was a forestry instructor in the area of the Bay of Fundy. The last time there, about 5 weeks, our whole family gathered there in a small village called Alma, a fantastic experience for me, who was then 11 years old and for the first time got to fly from Sweden all the way to Canada. An amazing nature, and not to mention the lobster fishing, absolutely incredible. 🦀🦞🦀🦞🦀🍤🍤

Good to know I’m not too late to catch shorebird migration through Maine. Saw my first little blue herons and rare (for here) tricolored herons last weekend! In the worst midday light ever. Now I just have to learn how to identify sandpiper species! I’m a big fan of your videos! I wondered if you knew if wearing certain colors is better for birding. You wear camo often, but not always.

You are really honing your craft and I'm enjoying the ride. I'll let you know when all those beautiful shore birds, after their epic migration, hit the beach down here in Panama. Their escorts will follow them all the way down, that's right, our friends the Peregrine Falcon. They perch on driftwood near the river mouths to watch over all those exhausted migrants, as they franticly gulp down mouthfuls of Titi in the tidal zone, just waiting for one to fall out of step. But I don't judge him, he's just doing his job. Thank you so much for the excellent video, and I'm glad to see you're traveling again, it has to feel good.

great video and amazing numbers! where I live we only get shorebirds in the tens during migrations... one question: how do you deal with army-crawling elbows? I use the same technique but at the end of the session my elbows are killing me from scraping on the sand... I am thinking about using my mountain biking elbow pads for protection!

Great video as always! Hopefully you have not been asked this too many times, but are you using a ND filter when shooting video or are you just increasing the aperture when it gets brighter. At 5:18 it looks fairly bright when filming the "peeps." Are you shooting 4K 120p? If you recall your settings I'd be interested in your expertise? Thanks for your time.
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! And no ND filter on my 200-600, the 95mm filter size causes a bit of a headache. When it's brighter, what I like to do is be in 4k 120fps, and then adjust shutter speed to compensate for the brightness. Typically you want your shutter speed to be double your frame rate. But I find that makes a bigger difference when filming in real time (24fps for example). When I slow down my 120fps footage, even if I'm using a higher SS than 1/250th, I don't notice much of a difference. But for good measure I try to keep it as close to 1/250th as I can. If I recall correctly, this clip you're referring to must have been at 4K 120fps, f/6.3, 1/800th, Auto ISO (likely at 100).
@outdoorfocus6329
@outdoorfocus6329 2 жыл бұрын
@@StefanoIaniro Wow! Thanks for the fast detailed response. Great tip about experimenting with increasing SS when shooting 120FPS, I will definitely try that. Also, thanks for the mini-review of the Sony 200-600 lens. After watching your video I pulled the trigger and sold my Sigma 150-600C and bought the Sony lens. As you mentioned the Sigma was good, but not in the same league as the Sony and the motor noise of Sigma was horrible when shooting video. If your travels every take you to Las Vegas bring your camera as it has an abundance of easily accessible birding areas. We certainly don't get the numbers of shorebirds at the Bay of Fundy, but I have shot images of over 20 species of shorebirds this year!
@IngmarHensler
@IngmarHensler 2 жыл бұрын
I saw many different shutter times for your photos. on what mode do you shoot? Are you selecting the shutter-time for every situation? I saw a 1/250th - for 600mm; do you have iron arms?!? ;-)
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 жыл бұрын
Majority of the time I'm on Manual but with Auto ISO. If the lighting situation is tricky, I'll go full manual. I tend to use 1/250th a lot since I'm constantly switching between photos and videos, and for 4k 120fps video, I'm usually using the shutter speed rule, which puts me at 1/250th. But otherwise I'm usually switching it depending the situation.

When you were shooting video of hundreds of birds in a flock did you use auto focus or manual focus? Appreciate your input
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro Жыл бұрын
I used both! AF works pretty well majority of the time, especially when tracking. If I wasn’t panning with the flock, I’d usually lock focus in Manual as the flock flew through the frame.

Those are from a rain jacket/rain pants kit from Browning. Sadly I don't remember the model name and the pants/jacket don't have a model written on them.

We’ve got these species on the high desert marshes where I live in Oregon. I’ve long sense ceased belly crawling over the muddy alkali. I sit on a bank and hope they land close or fly over.😊

That's a good strategy, as well. I did sit next to a large rock for a bit and they were still comfortable with my presence. I guess the name of the game is just don't look like a Peregrine Falcon 😅

Hi Stefano, May I ask if the new software update for the Sony a1 really improved the IS? I read an artical which said it bacame much better, but noone really talked about it. Did you experience any change in real life use when taking videos? Thanks for answering!
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, certainly a noticeable difference. Still not perfect, especially when handheld, but that's to be expected. But at least they're going in the right direction. Hopefully future software updates can improve on this.

What are the pros and cons of shifting from a7r4 to a1 ? Did you also contemplate shifting to the 400/600 prime ? But stuck with the a1 becaue its half the price for an an gareeable increase in light gathering ability ?
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 жыл бұрын
So far, the only one I can think of for how I shoot is price. Besides that, I can't really think of a scenario where I'd pick up the R4 over the a1. Maybe the slight drop in MP depending on what you're shooting. But I haven't found that to be a big difference for me. I'm eventually going to get one of the primes. Since I'm doing more and more video though, it's hard to justify the cost for a super telephoto fixed focal length. Having the zoom is very handy when it comes to filming, especially wildlife. I've also contemplated a 300 f/2.8 with both teleconverters, as a versatile prime option when it comes to video, but not anytime soon.

Hi, love your videos. I own the Sony A7R4 and 200-600mm, shifted from Nikon D850 & 200-500mm f5.6. Can you tell me how's the handholding capability with this Sony Combo ? I had no problem handholding with the 45mp D850 & 200-500mm. I am unable to test the sony combo due to restrictions. Thank You 🙏🏽 I shoot mainly mammals specially bigcats & sometimes static birds
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 жыл бұрын
Hard to say considering what's easy for me to handhold, may not be easy for someone else. But if you say you had the D850/200-500 and were fine with handholding, you should be good with the Sony setup considering it's lighter. A bummer you can't test out the combo beforehand. Always good to try it out before committing.

@@StefanoIaniro yeah it was a bummer but hoping for the best. Yes i could handhold the 200-500mm at 500mm @ 1/13s for static animals in very low light. For the Sony, i am expecting atleast around 1/250s and rest if very low light i could shoot short videos on the sony which was a bit problematic on the Nikon due to poor live view autofocus. Thank You 😊

@@StefanoIaniro I tested the 200-600mm and i love the 200-600mm on the A7R4....i can shoot static birds at 600mm @1/250 - 1/320s no problem handheld. I can also handhold it at 1/15s for still artificial objects too. Love its image quality over the Nikon 200-500mm and advantages of mirrorless.
