Usually also prefer ex bourbon. Never went for it last year though due to financial reasons. Yet picked up this years even though finances aren’t much better. Still to pop it but appreciate the review and heads up on this one

I'm not a sherry cask fan myself, but when used "sensibly" (which may mean in the right, carefully metered doses 🤠) in combination with bourbon casks on the few 12 yo cask strength releases, I have tasted, it can really add something very nice to Springbank's distilate. Especially the batch 20 which was a combination of 35% sherry and 65% bourbon casks was a cracker imho. Cheers, Stuart - thanks for the review 🥃

I have also been extremely disappointed with a that boutique-y calendar, it almost caused me to abandon the brand entirely simply because there were so many terrible drams.

I like a set of samples with some more exclusive stuff in there that makes a full bottle too expensive. Pretty to cool to shop for that as well, going through those endless lists of options to create a bespoke and personal set.

Hint: You get parched at the chinese takeway due to the MSG they add to it. Tell them not add any MSG and you won't get as thirsty : )

Love the deck of cards... just phenomenal. In the more affordable "end", if you know a newbie in whisky, a poster map of Scotland's distilleries is imho also a nice little gift. The walls in my whisky room slash man cave would certainly not be complete without such a map. I know, I know. Maps will be out of date as soon as they hit the market due to all the new distilleries, but still they provde a nice overview over regions and existing distilleries, and quite frankly I can live with a map without all the new distilleries - and if I find it necessary, I can find a new map in a couple of years or so.

Thanks for reviewing, Stuart. Seems like kind of an "oddball" whisky in this release with those tasting notes. Maybe that's why it's growing a bit on you... because you become curious over time about something that you don't get to taste "every week", so it never gets boring. At least not yet... Thompron Bros. unfortunately not a bottler that I'm familiar with. I think there was a Thompson Bros. tasting in my local whisky shop at some point before the summer break, but I missed that tasting. But heard/read a lot of good stuff about them for sure. Cheers! 🥃

You are on point with these mediocre reviews, but about official bottles, i think there really is plenty of bottles which are quality stuff (i really love Inchmurin 12, Ledaig etc.... )

It's only anecdotal, not scientific, but when corks have broken for me it has been when (or just after) I've first received the bottles (so a problem wherever it was previously stored), whereas I've had bottles on the go for up to 19 years with no cork-wetting and no problems. I've been convinced by people who have said that wetting the cork does no good and may do some harm, but I won't waste time now repeating their explanation...

The distillation process itself also drives the flavours in new make and hence final spirit , still shape , volume , lyne arm angle , etc etc

Nice video, Stuart. I never gave this a thought, not on a conscious level at least. The 2 most "common" for me seem to be colour (darker) equals more flavour and age (higher) equals better/higher quality whisky. Regarding the "primary flavour source", I'd agree with you on it being quite a high number with 80% from the cask, but of course it depends on the cask (first fill, refill, "wet" etc.) and how long the maturation of the whisky. I think it's a point that has so many valid answers. Older whiskies, of course it makes sense that more time in the cask means more time for it to influence the liquid inside. Just a few thoughts from my hand. Nothing scientific (it'll never be 😅), just some hunches, gut feelings and thoughts from the top of my head. Cheers! 🥃

95-100£.... well for what it's worth - the price on a Danish webshop (the only one where I can find it in stock) is currently approx 447£ 🙄 I'm not gonna try telling that webshop how to set their prices, but I can, however, decide not to put my money in their hands, so that's my decision 😆

This one was so much better than the PX. Now I might revisit it tonight...
