I think Miguel earned Daniels respect at the conference because he started to see that he was more similar to him than he thought. And when he said he was from Reseda i think he started to see him as more than Johnny student.

Out of the series... This was my favorite episode hands down. Miguel regained mobility, Chozen got his "revenge" and Daniel-san's business was saved.

Yeah writers did it purposely. That speaks about character for Daniel going to country club at Christmas has become a regular thing since last 30 years. He even said "it's a tradition". So he didn't put up that much work while Johnny wants to impress his high school ex gf and was probably going to country Club first time after 30 years
