The Arab Muslim Palestine was created in 1964. The previous Palestine in the Roman Empire was pagan followed by 100% Roman Catholic. The Arab Conquest ended that even if the Christian world continues to use that Geographic name. The Muslim Arab people of that name did not exist until 1964.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. 1964 was the year the PLO was created. It certainly was not the year Palestinian identity was formed. Palestinian identity was formed long before that. And Palestinians who lived in that region held multiple identities at once. They saw themselves as Arabs (ethnic), as Christians and Muslims (religious), as Ottomans (citizens / subjects) and as Palestinians (nationality). I would suggest reading the book "Palestinian Identity" by Rashid Khalidi to know more. Regards, Omar

Actually Christians speaking Arabic may have referred to the Holy Land as Palestine going all the way back to when they may have migrated to the Land, but the Muslim Arab conquerors from the 7th Century onwards did not use that name to describe any Islamic province or peoplehood with that name. We know this from several sources. 1. The Ottomans did make a special province for the Al Quds (Jerusalem)/ Hebron area because of a story attributed to a night ride of Muhammad and to the burial spot of Abraham. But the desolate exspanse of land from Al Quds to the Lebanese border (2/3rds of the Holy Land), at all times provincial capitals were in Beirut or Damascus. 2. In 1949 after Israel's War of Independence the Jordanians did not identify the West Bank as Palestine. Neither did the Egyptians in Gaza. No Arab Nomenclature for a Muslim people called Palestine when they had the opportunity to do so in 1949.

@@bookcafepodcast And the "Christian Arabs" would have used the name Palestine because their Christian heritage was Roman Catholic or Orthodox Christian from the Roman Empire in origin going back to Constantine. The name "Palestine" described no "native" Arab Semitic people who were part of the Muslim conquest.

The Arabs who lived in the Ottoman Empire were never “Palestinians” or “Lebanese” - they were Arabs, citizens of the Empire. And the Jews who lived next to them in this province of the Empire were the same. in Palestine under the mandate of the British Empire, passports were given to both. If we tell the story of the struggle of the Arabs of Palestine against the Jews and against the Jewish settlers from Europe, then we must start with Hitler and Khomenei. And continue the activities of the KGB of the USSR and several Arab aggressions against Israel. And the subsequent seizure of Palestinian lands by Egypt and Jordan, and then the betrayal and expulsion of the Palestinian Arabs by Arab countries.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. If I may...? There's a difference between ethnicity and nationality. And to hit home this point, I'll give an example from my own background. "Bengal" is a geographical region in North-East India. The people who come from this region are an ethno-linguistic people known as the Bengalis. Bengal region today is shared between the Indian State of "West Bengal" and the sovereign / independent nation-state of "Bangladesh". Bangladesh did not exist before 1971. But that does not mean that the Bengali people didn't exist or that the geographical region of Bengal did not exist. Similarly, "Palestine" is a distinct geographical location which is now shared between "The State of Israel" and "The Palestinian Territories". The existence of a modern nation-state doesn't invalidate the geographic identity. Hence, "Ottoman" is a nationality as is "Lebanese" and "Palestinian". But whereas the Ottoman nationality no longer exists, it has since been succeeded by the "Lebanese" nationality and the "Palestinian" nationality. We do ourselves a great disservice if we get bogged down in semantics. The core of the matter is neither one state or two states, but EQUALITY and EQUAL RIGHTS for all the people who live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. We recorded an episode with Isrseli journalist Gideon Levy who articulated this point quite nicely. Hi, thanks for your feedback. If I may offer an example from my part of the world... "Bengal" is a geographical region in the Eastern part of the Indian subcontinent that currently hosts the Indian State of "West Bengal" and the sovereign nation-state of "Bangladesh". In the same vein, "Palestine" is a geographical region that currently hosts the "State of Israel" and "The Palestinian Territories". The presence of West Bengal and Bangladesh do not invalidate the existence of the geographic region of Bengal in any way. And neither does the existence of Israel and the Palestinian Territories invalidate the existence of the geographic region of Palestine in any way. We do ourselves a disservice when we attempt to deny the identity of others. At the heart of all of this is having equality and equal rights for all. Whether there is a sovereign Palestinian state or not is less important than having equality for everybody within that geographic region. Regards, Omar

Hebrew t became extinct as a spoken language By the late 19th century, Russian-Jewish linguist Eliezer Ben-Yehuda had begun a popular movement to revive Hebrew as a living language, motivated by his desire to preserve Hebrew literature and a distinct Jewish nationality in the context of Zionism.

The Genocide Convention is the result of Raphael Lemkin's life work. Lemkin was an American Law Scholar - a Polish Jew who started thinking about the idea after reading a book about the persecution of Christians under the Roman Empire called "Quo Vadis?". When he started his effort in the UN to get the Convention approved, he found out that the great powers did not want to support it and then he decided to talk to other members starting with Latin American countries and realized they were ready to sign the convention and are among the first nations to support it. The Genocide Convention was adopted by the UN in 1948 - the US signed it in full only in 1986.

"We are something good!" - amazing. In the film "Red" by Polish filmmaker Kristof Kieslowski there's a scene in which the young woman, while talking about her brother heroin addiction to the old retired judge, says "I wish I could do something to help him" and the judge replies "you can: be!"

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Yes, I took the call to ask her that question since it was such a huge event in her brother Miko Peled's life (he's the author of "The General's Son). We've not had Miko on the show yet, but we hope to have him on at a future date. It was a difficult question to ask, and hence why I even prefaced it by saying "I need to ask a difficult question." Her response to this personal tragedy is very compelling as you've rightly pointed out. -Omar

24:20 The graphic novel author Will Eisner - the most important creator in his field - published an autobiographical graphic novel called "In The Eye Of The Storm". His parents were European Jews - his father from Germany and his mother from Poland - who met and married in the US before WWII. On some point he tells of when some relatives of his father managed to escape nazi Germany and moved to New York and his father took him to meet them and gave them some home made bread his mother had made specially for them: one of his father's relatives comment "you married a Polish Jew, right? Well, they aren't as good as German Jews but at least they aren't as bad as Russian Jews". Eisner shows in the drawings himself as a child looking at his father looking like "what? I don't understand it!" and his father looking at him as if he was saying "don't worry - I explain to you later". Will Eisner created the modern graphic novel / comic book when he published "Spirit". The Palm d'Or, the Nobel Prize, the Fields Medal of graphic novels is the Eisner Prize. He is often compared to Orson Welles and I believe we could even compare him to Eisenstein - because all of them were such innovators in their areas that the areas themselves can't be understood without mentioning their work.

There's a documentary called "Defamation" by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir that shows (among other things) the visit Israeli High School students do to the main concentration camps in Poland. There's something very funny quite early in the film - something that is not only funny but that also shows how even zionism can't be considered a monolithic ideology. Yoav Shamir did, previously, a very important documentary called "Checkpoint".

People should look into who she is, who was her father, grandfather and who's her brother. People should also look into her life history. I consider her a giant human being - and very few people have the moral authority she has - and that's why her boss had to walk back in his decision to fire her from the University of Jerusalem. Oh ... btw, she's also a pretty competent and serious scholar!

The Arab Jews suffered in Israel by being humiliated, not being able to speak their language, not allowed to listen to their music, even they were asked to change their names. They have been discriminated against by the European Jews who accepted and followed Zionism freely. But the Arab Jews refused to accept Zionism And still going on. They’re considered second class citizens.

That's one of the ways to resolve this ongoing issue. There is a reason for why israelis were raised like that. It was not a paranoide idea that Jewish communities in Palestine were harassed, or chased or murdered. It was well written by the arab leaders, specially the Mufti of Jerusalem. Now, if we are to give opinions, it should be honest to give facts. Israel is not a perfect state, please, tell me one that it is. Israelis are not angels on earth, tell me a country that has them as citizens. Everyone is trying to survive the best they can. But, living with a neighbor that needs to eliminate you in every song and prayer they make, and then in terrorist actions, and those are the palestinians, is not an easy job for any psiche. I deplore the lack of a broader understanding on the state of affairs Ms Nurit shows on her views.

I am also a Jew from the diaspora from North Africa, and we had also other reasons to migrate and integrate Israel. and I am sorry to say that you teach absurd reasons. My first wife was Askenaz from Poland, and we have beautiful family. Not all was perfect in Israel, but there were other reasons for the difficulties. I am sorry for what you are doing and teaching. you are not providing the right message to other people who have no israeli context.

This lady has contradicted herself twice. Is people really listening to her and understanding what she's saying. The safartic Jews we're kicked out of all other arab countries. It's amazing how many Jew hating Jews they are out there. She never talks about how Jews were treated as second class Citizen in all the Arabic countries. She never talked about how Jews. In Arab countries could be killed by Muslim and nothing could be done about it. She never talked about before there was a Israel. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem tried to wipe out all the Jews in Palestine, who had been living there for centuries. Just because somebody call themselves a professor and write books. Don't mean they're being truthful. I feel a little sorry for the Jewish people, because there are so many enemies amongst them. She forget the Jews have always lived in palestine, but for some reason. It's okay for the arabs to bring more arabs, but the Jews can't bring Jews to Palestine. She forget the Jews legally bought land in Palestine. And won the rest of the land through wars, that Israel did not start. But the so-called palestinians, who fought against the Jews, lost a war and feel they have a right to come back and live amongst the people you tried to kill off. She's a professor ask her where does that happen anywhere in history?

Her theory that feelings of revenge against Germans are directed instead against Arabs is not true in my opinion. There is an enormous amount of Jew hatred and revenge against Jews for aiding in the killing of Muhammad in the Quran and books of Bukhari that Arab Muslims earned their own revenge if that’s what you want to call it. She is being quite unfair to Israeli Jews. They have held out a hand in peace so many times only to have Muslim Arabs return the gesture with terror and murder. Like so many Jews, she has decided to make a living out of self-hatred.

I am an Iranian dissident now living in the West. I had the opportunity to work in Israel for 5 years. My wife’s gynocologist was Arab Muslim, many of my children’s professors at the university were Arab Muslims. Our nanny was a Christian Arab….I was very impressed by the diversity in Israel- Christian’s, Druze, Bedouins, Baha’i, etc. I saw no apartheid and was also impressed by the fact that Israel is a democracy, there is freedom of speech, opportunities to climb the latter of success if you work hard. No country is perfect but as a person who was raised in the Middle East I can tell you that if I had to return to the region and could live anywhere it would be Israel.

With regards to apartheid, the apartheid is not within "Green Line Israel" where you were staying, but rather within the Occupied Territories. Palestinian citizens of Israel (also known as Arab-Israelis) have full and equal rights within Green Line Israel, but still face discrimination in terms of where they can live and what houses they can buy. This is as per what the Israeli journalist Gideon Levy said. One question. How did it happen that in a racist state this woman who actively defends the murderers of thousands of innocent Jewish people including her own thirteen year daughter was allowed to freely spread her dirty lies? In what other country it would be possible? Could anyone imagine a scholar saying a single good word about Israel or Jews in any Arab country without being killed? Just think about it before praising this “professor”.
