It's not illegal to take them, it's illegal to sell home kits for several religious and insurance reasons. It's easy to get pass that and take the test for anyone who wants to.

lol, it is not easy to get them. “It is illegal to sell/buy a dna test” is still accurate regardless of having to apply for a permit from the govt and show reasons as to why, & it is limited to who they approve. Israeli dna test companies can only sell abroad. banning the regular sale of DNA tests “for religious reasons” as a state is not a valid reason as to why israeli govt does not allow it. In fact the government on multiple occasions said that it was bc of potential political use - that someone could use it against the political consciousness of the state. the “all Jews are indigenous to Palestine biologically” latest formulation (including how Palestinians are able to find it, but European, American immigrants would not- or, simply the idea that plenty of mizrahi Jews in Israel have very similar dna tests to Palestinians. Long story short - having to apply for a permit that is granted on a basis of how the govt sees your identity and approves whether or not you are allowed access it is still a ban on the sale of dna kits. And like all the laws of Israel- an israeli Jew may find themselves with ease of access to said permit, and a Palestinian citizen of Israel is refused point blank.

It is NOT illegal to take a DNA test in Israel. That is an outright lie! It is illegal to SELL DNA information in Israel. Most commercial DNA companies sell the DNA information of those that pay for the testing. Israel is one of the most scientific countries and does more research using DNA than most countries. There are whole Institutes that are based on DNA research. Please don't spread lies!

I wonder about that myself. In 70 AD at the destruction of the temple, all records of genealogy were also destroyed. It is impossible to even trace the lineage of the royal line as in relation to who rules the Synagogues/temple.

I am an Iranian dissident now living in the West. I had the opportunity to work in Israel for 5 years. My wife’s gynocologist was Arab Muslim, many of my children’s professors at the university were Arab Muslims. Our nanny was a Christian Arab….I was very impressed by the diversity in Israel- Christian’s, Druze, Bedouins, Baha’i, etc. I saw no apartheid and was also impressed by the fact that Israel is a democracy, there is freedom of speech, opportunities to climb the latter of success if you work hard. No country is perfect but as a person who was raised in the Middle East I can tell you that if I had to return to the region and could live anywhere it would be Israel.

Palestinian citizens of Israel (also known as Arab-Israelis) have full and equal rights within Green Line Israel, but still face discrimination in terms of where they can live and what houses they can buy. This is as per what the Israeli journalist Gideon Levy said. This was a fascinating discussion, what an insightful & principled woman. I grew up around U.S. evangelical 'Christian Zionism', my father was extremely obsessed with 'Bible prophecy', and strong support for Israel was part of that- even though the belief is that most jews will end up damned to hell. As I got older, I left those religious beliefs & learned more of the truth about Israeli occupation - but until recently I had little idea the true extent of the extreme bigotry and racism that is fostered in that region. I recently saw comments from one of the leaders of the 'settler' movement, Daniella Weiss, admit that she constantly "brainwashes" herself- it's like they realize how far-gone their society is, and are enthusiastic participants in their own indoctrination.

You learnt what? How do you know if her facts are facts? Don't believe everything a "professor" is saying. There are thousands of professors on this planet. One thing I can tell you for sure. She doesn't know much about concentration camps, how important they are, that EVERYBODY should visit one in his lifetime! It could traumatise you? So what! People watch awful movies. Why suddenly playing sensitive when seeing a picture of thin and bony Jews close to death? With empty eyes. Nobody should look away so it shall never happen again. Only those of us who have fully embraced the holocaust are able to feel the desperation of Holocaust survivors knowing that they have no other place to go. I am German by the way and a convinced Atheist.

Hi, please permit me to answer: 1. As per what Prof. Nurit Peled-Elhanan said, Israel is presented as an alternative to the Holocaust. So her argument is that to have children constantly bombarded with fear of annihilation from a young age will most certainly cause them to grow up to have a siege mentality. But whereas the German Nazis should be paying the price for the Holocaust, the price is instead being paid by the Palestinians who had nothing to do with the Holocaust. 2. You said you're from Germany. Do Namibians for example do what Israelis do and take their children to see "concentration camps"? Because let's keep in mind that Germany was responsible for the Namibian Genocide as well. The answer is obviously no. Germany gets away with this and instead doubles down on blind support for Israel to atone for it's part in the Jewish Holocaust. But Namibians are conveniently forgotten because they don't make as much noise about it. 3. Let's also talk about Armenians. Do they take their children to Turkish "concentration camps" to induce a siege mentality on them? 4. Let's give another example from my location. Do ethnic Bengalis from West Bengal and Bangladesh take their kids to Number 10 Downing Street to remind them about the 'accidental genocide' that Prime Minister Winston Churchill perpetrated in 1943? Churchill basically starved 4 million Bengalis to death so that he could save all the food as backup rations for British soldiers who were fighting against Nazi Germany. When his officers stated that people were dying of starvation, he peevishly asked, "Then why hasn't Gandhi died yet?" So this is basically what is going on here: exploitation and milking of a tragic event for insidious purposes. No other country or people does this apart from Israel. If it were up to me, I would probably partition Germany to carve out Hertzl's Israel. That, in my humble opinion, would be real German atonement for the Jewish Holocaust. -Omar

It's sick that you use g-side as your and their clutch and/or walking stick to stay broken people. It's weak and cowardly. The Holocaust is not a personal trauma of those living today, yet you clutch at it as if you yourself survived it. You/they did not. You obviously missed the entire point. I pity you. Stay broken and kill Palestinians so your conscience could stay in its comfort zone or in The Zone of Interest, Jonathan Glazer's movie. Nurit obviously hit a nerve with you. Why else would you question her academic work. You know, when someone hits a nerve, what should follow if you were psycho-socially mature and emotionally developed is self-reflection. Not attacking the professor on some non-existent personal ground. People see through that. It's sad that you don't. But all of that speaks volumes about you and you alone. And it says that you clutch at the Holocaust as prosthetic trauma.

Hi, thank you for this feedback. Yes, you're absolutely right. Mr. Modi's Hindutva ideology and anti-Muslim sentiment is something that is (unfortunately) helping him bond well with Mr. Netanyahu. Incidentally, Mr. Modi's negative stance towards Muslims is a political ploy to hold on to his hardline base. It's directed mostly towards Indian Muslims and Pakistani Muslims. He has no problems in fostering good relations with the Muslim majority Gulf Countries, nor with my own country Bangladesh. The external pressure on Israel has to come from the US. They are the only superpower that has the ability to reign Israel in. The question is about "will". Are they willing to pull the plug? The jury is still out on that. I agree. I'd known about her losing her daughter in a bomber attack, how she blamed the government and Netanyahu when Rabin was killed. Of course, I've watched and read Miko Peled's work. I'm not famous, but am very curious about the world, its people, cultures, history and, of course, literature (especially poetry). A day doesn't pass that I don't learn new things about people, culture or history. I love it, plus it keeps my brain functioning better than most people my age.(or even most who much younger). People should look into who she is, who was her father, grandfather and who's her brother. People should also look into her life history. I consider her a giant human being - and very few people have the moral authority she has - and that's why her boss had to walk back in his decision to fire her from the University of Jerusalem. Oh ... btw, she's also a pretty competent and serious scholar!

The Genocide Convention is the result of Raphael Lemkin's life work. Lemkin was an American Law Scholar - a Polish Jew who started thinking about the idea after reading a book about the persecution of Christians under the Roman Empire called "Quo Vadis?". When he started his effort in the UN to get the Convention approved, he found out that the great powers did not want to support it and then he decided to talk to other members starting with Latin American countries and realized they were ready to sign the convention and are among the first nations to support it. The Genocide Convention was adopted by the UN in 1948 - the US signed it in full only in 1986.

Brilliant. Professor Peled-Elhanan’s exposure of the pedagogy of inculcating "heterophobia" - Fear of the Other - points to the essence of our modern horrors: whoever can be regarded as the Other is the enemy, dehumanized, denied personhood, deemed "vermin", erased. It is the exact opposite of the moral imagination and empathy that must be nurtured in order to transcend the brutality that we humans commit again and again. "Never again" must apply to everyone.

I was just speaking with my wife about how many parallels there are between the British butchering of Palestinian societal structures and the way that experience carried over to their next victims in the partition of India. I know it’s been studied and talked about at length, but this is the first time I’ve seen such an honest discussion of it here since October. Future generations have to remember how these seeds were planted. The only thing getting people through the repeated injustices are people like you two. Justin (Trudeau, Liberal), PP (Pierre Poilievre, Conservative, wannabe-Trump-knockoff) & (Jaspreet) Singh (NDP) are the leaders of the main federal political parties. Trudeau has repeatedly said "We support 🇮🇱's right to defend itself" 🙄 Haven't heard much from PP? Cons were making inroads with Muslim pop. But no way I'd believe they're really anything but MOST rabid Zionists. (My Con rep has only posted an 🇮🇱 flag with an "all lives matter" message, radio silence since, won't even call for 🇮🇱 protesters to not block food aid). Singh came out recently as pro-Israel which was SO disappointing! No good options left. 😢 In better news: thank you for the reading list! I'll be sure to check out more of your vids. I was "standard North American white person" clueless on Oct 6 but am learning as fast as I can!

Hello, thank you so much for your feedback and for getting me up to date on Canadian politics, I really appreciate it. 🙏 Yes, that is quite disappointing - shocking really - to hear that support for Israel is a given across all parties and that there's no overt support for Palestinians. I'm at a loss to understand why that is given that Canada has a much more diverse population aa compared to the US. The US may pride itself on being a melting pot, but I much prefer Canada's unity in diversity where nobody is forced into uniformity per se but is instead encouraged to contribute their uniqueness to the mosaic / tapestry that is Canada. I'll always have a big place in my heart for Canada and I do hope that things change for the better. -Omar

24:20 The graphic novel author Will Eisner - the most important creator in his field - published an autobiographical graphic novel called "In The Eye Of The Storm". His parents were European Jews - his father from Germany and his mother from Poland - who met and married in the US before WWII. On some point he tells of when some relatives of his father managed to escape nazi Germany and moved to New York and his father took him to meet them and gave them some home made bread his mother had made specially for them: one of his father's relatives comment "you married a Polish Jew, right? Well, they aren't as good as German Jews but at least they aren't as bad as Russian Jews". Eisner shows in the drawings himself as a child looking at his father looking like "what? I don't understand it!" and his father looking at him as if he was saying "don't worry - I explain to you later". Will Eisner created the modern graphic novel / comic book when he published "Spirit". The Palm d'Or, the Nobel Prize, the Fields Medal of graphic novels is the Eisner Prize. He is often compared to Orson Welles and I believe we could even compare him to Eisenstein - because all of them were such innovators in their areas that the areas themselves can't be understood without mentioning their work.

I have listened to many great historians like Norman Finkelstein, ilan pappe, Miko Paled, Gabor Mate,etc but… this has to be the most informative one hour. 51:32 Peoples litterature. Nurit Elhanan Peled is an amazing woman. Her perspective on the matter of Israel/Palestine is so eyeopening for me. The siblings Miko and Nurit have each their take on this matter, both so very educating. This interview had me crying, I can feel her anger towards those in power and her huge empathy for all victims of this system, amazing woman, brave, hearty and concise, cutting to the core without drama, just with such a true heartfelt empathy, and understanding knowledge, considering her own loss. Imagine loosing a child and still be able to say: "At least he had the decency to take his own life too, not like the army soldiers."!!! Great interview thank you!!!

The comparisons to Australia and South America - yes. It’s such a clear pattern that I can’t fathom sometimes how people today can deny it. I’d add North America and the murdering, driving out, and eventual rounding up of the natives here too. All based on colonial desire to expand, dominate, destroy the “other.” The evisceration of the past into parts that must be erased and obscured, and parts that must be romanticised and manipulated.

Yes, absolutely. It's very upsetting that the US and Canada have never come to terms with their own genocidal past, vis-a-vis the Native Americans and the First Nations. And as a consequence, most North Americans at best sympathize with the Israeli Settler-Colonial movement and at worst they find absolutely nothing wrong with displacing other people from their homes to make room for settlers. This is a huge gap with regards to Truth amd Reconciliation which North America needs to catch up with. South Africa and Australia too their credit at least have done so as far as my knowledge goes. Problem with Peleds book is that it was not published in hebrew, so the books she refers to are hard to track, but once you do you see some problematic translation on her part. A bit like how the bible translated from the hebrew "moses face were glowing" to the latin "moses face had horns"… quite the difference.

I can very well understand what you are saying. I think we are ignoring that while the focys is on jews who were timid (maybe), soft , soft spoken, civilised and therefore weak in comparison to muslims or sub saharan africans in terms of physical power and specifically agressiveness one is also overlooking that those tyoe of jews had produced tremendous talented, cultured people, famous names of yester years we all rever. Now if it is true that jews wanted ti be like muslims i can very well understand that, it us the same way we bengalis, assamese and all other north east indian and himalayan people felt (even including the bengali.muslims) when we had to face the toughness of muslims, sikhs and hindus of punjab and north india and many including me grew up trying to be rough and tough ,virtually looking down on our iwn culture of respect for women and cultures and civilised behaviors and softness and civility in public life because we had also suffered by being too soft compared to others but wgat happened actually is we landed as yiu saud as thugs and petty trouble makers, maybe stronger physically than before but socially divided, fighting with each other and abusing women, loosing our richness in culture in the process and now that is coming seriously back at us to exact its price on our society, we are now poor, not enjoying our lives in our society , not enjoying the musuc, the movies. This decline if i may say so was further accelerated with shift of global.power from a much more traditional and cuktured europe to a macho cultured america and popularisation of that shift.

Surprisingly it was a pakistani pathan muslim whom i met inside europe ,a very soft spoken , civilised to the core pleasing young personality who told me about the decline in bengali culture and about our increasing propensity to copy others loosing the sweetness that was inherent in us. I mean we usually think of pathans as tough guys , but honestly the more i see these people the more i tend to appreciate their line of thinking , the righteousness with which they can tread the fine line, the often invisible line between civility and lack of that where it seems even europeans are faltering post americanisation.

Hi, thank you for this very detailed feedback. You raise some very good points and I'm intrigued by what you've written. Am I correct in assuming that you're an ethnic Bengali from India? There was an interesting debate that took place in Kolkata some 8 years back between Bengali intellectuals from both India and Bangladesh. And the topic of the debate was "Bangla bhashar pit theke giyeche deyale" (The Bengali language has got it's back towards the wall). The conclusion that came out from this very interesting debate is that while Indian Bengali culture has to constantly fight for survival within a sea of pluralism - and as a result get eroded to some extent - the same was not true for Bangladeshi Bengali culture. So in other words, as long as Bangladesh exists, the Bengali people, language, and culture will be never die out. This is one of the byproducts of having a state like Bangladesh where 98% of the population happens to be ethnic Bengalis. But lest we forget, there's another 2% of Bangladeshis that are at this point struggling to preserve their language and culture. God knows what will happen to them. They'll either survive or get absorbed into the larger Bengali culture. I'm personally a pluralist when it comes to culture and religion. Languages and cultures would constantly mix in the ancient world; there were fewer international borders or opportunities to fully isolate oneself. Isolation is not healthy at all. So I much prefer having a balance between global culture and local culture. And the state also has to play a role in preserving and promoting language and culture. Regards, Omar

From your looks I thought you are a Jew and I had not yet listened to the full conversation and I was delighted to find a Jew of Bengali origin but please do not take that as an affront. Well yes Bengali language and culture as well as other regional languages and culture are threatened within India and honestly I think that has more to do with the political necessity of keeping a unified india with its hindu population intact than anything else and that Hindi language push and resulting marginalisation of local languages was actually started during the rule of first indian PM J. Nehru even though I am 100% confident he had no intention of marginalising local languages but was just very apprehensive of disintegration of India from pulling of regional cultures. Yes the birth of bangladesh and helps the bengali language to survive but as you rightly pointed out it also marginalises the 2% of population inside bangladesh left out of that spectrum and honestly the more i seethe new generation of Bangladeshis the more I become apprehensive of the minorities inside Bangladesh, in comparison. I feel the pakistanis ,particularly those from the northern part are much more reliable,humane and cultured lot at present, isn't that a huge shame for all bengalis? However I must say the mob based religious madness, the mob based self styled guardianship of religion and culture and national spirit and mindlessness that is continuously witnessed in south asia and recently in pakistan with an alarming incident as recent as yesterday involving a very decent looking woman having some Arabic calligraphy on her dress which the mob assumed was insulting to islam , as well as the continuous ugliness involving religious sentiments inside india, inside Bangladesh and muslim immigrants, asylum takers inside europe is nothing short of alarming. Without meaning any offence to you or your faith I steadfastly believe nowadays that people who move to another place and applies fir citizenship or permanent residence must first agree and actually let go off their ancestral culture and religion and adopt the culture ,language and religion of the new land. If that had been followed we would not have been facing the tragedy of rohingyas, neither would have the muslim community as a whole faced this severe global polarisation against them. I mean if any other community had faced a fraction of the level of mindless killing of children as has happened in gaza with the palestinians there would have been no israel by now but thats an important point i wish to pass across to everyone and particularly the muslim community. I strongly suggest that a person who adopts a new land must respect and follow not just the rules and laws of the new land but also the social norms, the culture and religion of those places. You see this multiculturalism may sound exotic and spicy but it has its serious drawbacks too. While I also do not wish the world go back to tribal compartmentalisation of the past but this hoj poj intermixing in places as far as near the poles of the world is seriously grotesque and untenable, bound to create problems for everyone. You may point out why i brought religion into this discussion. Honestly, what religious people either ignores or refuses to accept or just is not aware of that religion and society and nations and associated national politics had always been intertwined with each other. Religion to me is another form of social management option that focuses on not just visible evidences but also non visible, non provable and yet existing, persisting natural phenomenon which affects every human beings on earth , even those who derides religion. So it is neither ignorable nor is it separable from society and management of society and associated politics. So when a person decides to make a new land as their new home they must be sensitive and humble enough to adopt the new lands culture abd religion. For one no single religion,no single language, no single culture is suitable for all kinds of people of earth ,that is the plurality I am ready to bat fir not that natural global variety trying to be squeezed into a single place in one corner of the earth because there happens to be some potential economic benefits. That is totally unnatural ,untenable idea.

Every life small or big, physically strong or mentally so has some form of survival mechanism, some strong and some weak characteristics. During 1971 war the bengali people were pushed to the brink and there was no option than to fight back, it does not prove or disproves any theory, theories go as far as they can help sustainance of life and sanctity of it not beyond that

There's a documentary called "Defamation" by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir that shows (among other things) the visit Israeli High School students do to the main concentration camps in Poland. There's something very funny quite early in the film - something that is not only funny but that also shows how even zionism can't be considered a monolithic ideology. Yoav Shamir did, previously, a very important documentary called "Checkpoint".

For all those who cannot really check the facts because they don't know Hebrew. Peled is using Israeli books from the early 1960s when Israel fought Fatah when it just began its activities. Had she opened history or civics books from Israel that are used today she would have found that every student in Israel is taught to respect Arabs, respect diaspora Jews and understand the Palestinian side. In fact, Jews in Israel are required to learn about the Nakba narrative in their history lessons, learn about the rise of Palestinian nationality, learn about the causes of the Intifada and about the peace process with the Arabs. They are also required to learn in Junior High about Islam and its history without prejudice and with great respect to it. In Civics they learn about the importance of Pluralism and Democracy and to respect the Arab citizens of Israel. I am a High School History and Civics teacher in the Zionist-religious branch of the Israeli education system (a branch considered to be more "intolerant" by people like Peled) and this is in the curriculum. I can say that all of her claims are moot regarding today's curriculum and education system and if she had the least integrity possible she would have opened a recent book or curriculum in the Israeli Education System.

@@bookcafepodcast In History lessons we mostly teach that Palestinians have three narratives about their national identity - 1)They are Cannanites who were conquered by the Israelities during the Yehushua conquest (we also teach that there is no prrof for such a narrative and that it tries to stretch the conflict back to Biblical times) 2) They are Arabs who came here after the Muslim conquest in the late 7th century and afterwards. 3) They are Muslims who see themselves as part of the Muslim world and may be Jews who converted to Islam in the 8th century. Some of them (like the el'mahamra, المخامرة, familiy in Yatta) clearly state as such (though not that they were converted as early as the 8th century). We teach (according to Prof. Yeushua Porat who studied the Arab political groups in the late Ottoman empire and the early days of the British mandate) that Palestinian nationality first emerged as a concrete political movement after the Balfour decleration (1917) and mainly as a response to that. THIS IS MAINLY TO SAY THAT THERE WERE NO PALESTINIANS, AS A SELF AWARE, DIFFERENT NATIONALITY UNTIL 1917. We mainly teach that they saw themselves as Arabs, Muslims, Christians or citizens of the Ottoman Empire or part of their tribal and familial ties (like the Nashashibis, the Housseinis etc.) and that the Balfour decleration made them afraid that the Jews will control them which resulted in them establishing, gradually, a distinct national identity that was mostly against Zionism than truly a seperate nationalism from other Arab countries at first. This, in turn, and especially after the wars with the Arabs states in which the latter lost, the Palestinians evolved their nationality into a truly distinct one from other Arab states. We teach about the Muslim Christian groups in the 1917 that emerged as a response to the Balfour decleration and tried to recruit the Arab population of what would be mandatory Palestine. We teach about the "Great Syria" political movement, that the el'Houseeini family was part of in the Nadi el'Arabi group, and how it shows that Palestinians still saw the land that would later be mandatory Palestine as part of a greater whole that included Syria and Lebanon. We teach about their claims against the Balfour decleration and the MackMahon-Hussein letters and how they contradict the Balfour decleartion. We also teach about how the Palestinians saw the Jewish immigrants of the third Alyah (the first being in 1882, the second in 1904, the third in 1918) as colonial, anti Muslim, anti religious bunch that was against their culture and religion (some of them surely were). We then explain how these claims are valid to some point but that the local population in what would be mandatory Palestine were mostly apolitical and that the Zionist immigrants (since 1882) bought land from it willingly. We also teach that the immigrants had no colonial intentions and only wanted to have a peaceful land for themselves in which they could get self determination and for which they prayed to return for 1800 years. We also see parts from Hertzel's Altneuland, written 20 years before the Balfour decleration in which he envisions the Arabs of the holy land and the Jews being united in a modern state that highlights both modern humantiarian values and old ethnic ones and pray together in Jerusalem. We later teach about the settelers' effort to build agricultural communities and new cities and their fight against the British after the third White Book (1939) and Arab terrorism. We also teach about Jewish terrorism at the time (the acts of the policeman Hinkis in Jaffa in 1929, the Etzel and Lehi actions that harmed citizens) why they did it and how it is wrong. We then teach about the 1947 U.N resolution and the fight to get it and the Independence War (including the Nakba and how most Palestinians fled Israel, or were expelled by the IDF, but that Jews didn't becuase they didn't have friendly Jewish states to run to), the Arab-Israeli conflict and the first years of the Israeli state until 1967 and the consequences of this war on both the Jewish and Palestinians. We also teach about the rise of the Terrorist groups Fatah and Hamas, the peace processes with the Arab world and antizionism. We don't teach about the Israeli involvement in Lebanon. These are the subjects we teach about the Israeli-Arab and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict (aside from other Jewish history) Israeli maps in class show Gaza as "the Gaza Strip" and the West Bank as "The West Bank" and they are depicted as being seperate from Israel. Nevertheless, we don't use the word "Palestine" but call them "the Palestinian Territories" or "The Territories" because they lack an official reognition by Israel as a soverign state (though we explain that the Palestinians have political and plice control there). Furthermore, the "Territories" also include many Jewish settlements and parts that are neither in complete Israeli or complete Palestinian control so the maps are quite confusing as they are. When we talk about the land from 1881-1917 we call the place "Eretz Israel" (as Jews call the holy land even when most of them were not there) but explain that it was named "Southern Syria" or Jund Filastine by the local population and the Ottomans.When we talk about 1921- 1948 we call it "Mandatory Palestine" or "Eretz Israel during the Mandate period". When we talk about it afterwards we call it the "state of Israel". We stress that the map of mandatory Palestine was not always the map of Israel and that both the Palestinians and Israelis have a wrong conception ofhow the land was divided politically in the Ottoman empire and how the British created the borders we know today. We also blame the British and French for most of the chaos in the Middle East. In most religious Zionist schools they teach about the sanctity of the whole of Israel but that it may be something that will never happen (only in the End Times). We also teach that the two state solution is a viable solution as long as the Palestinians will prove that they want peace, teach for peace and love and stop their terrorism for good and their incitment to violence. After they prove their true desire to live peacefully next to Israel (and not just build an army with this state that will conquer it and expell its citizens or kill them) then the two state solution can move on. some even teach (in secular or in Israeli Arab schools) that the Palestinians could become full citizens of Israel (one state solution) if they stop their violence and extremism for good. Hope this gave you a broad view on how Israelis see the conflict as portrayed by the Israeli education system.

I've lived in Israel for over 40 years. My inlaws were Holocaust survivors. My husband, my children and three of my children are Sabras. Her English was so bad I couldn't get through the tape. The image of the strong Israeli existed, because Jews could not defend themselves in the Holocaust. But this was short lived. Israelis returned to the image of enlightenment and scholastic achievement, and my children and grandchildren have been taught kindness, acceptance and tolerance of EVERYONE, in school. I worry that this video will be used to negate the actual hate we have found in Palestinian school books such as "The Jew is evil and must be killed", and games where children have to find the Jew to kill him. While there were undercurrents of discrimination in Israel in the 1959s-1980s, it is important to mention that almost everyone was discriminated against in some way. Israel was building a country whose primary goal was to survive, and there was competition between everyone to be the strongest. A few years of peace have allowed Israelis to change and not be ashamed of who they were in the Diaspora. But honestly, my husband makes no mention of anti-Palestinian tropes in his school books. I am worried your video aims to soften and to equalize how UNWRA has been educating Palestinian children.

And her main motivation for writing the book was to try and understand how Israeli school students are programmed to see Palestinians in a dehumanized way once they join the IDF at the age of 18. And the conclusion she's reached is that school trips to Auschwitz and the complete absence/ erasure of Palestinian history are behind the causes. 2. Given that you've given us an alternative perspective here, the best way to settle the debate would be to have a look at her book yourself and then come to a conclusion based on all the information that is available. 3. It was always there, around the world. Inherently, I believe, Christianity and Islam can never forgive the Jews for not joining their ranks, creating open faced doubts on their own beliefs. It's always there, and the more religious people become, the more it pops to the surface. Maybe discrimination or ignorance of the Palestinian history in Jewish history books in schools fueled this return to Shaaria and religiosity, but anti-semitism was always there. I personally believe this brand of anti-semitism is because of Arab pride and maschimo. While I am totally against the Right Wing party in Israel and have been protesting against them consistently for 10 months, I am not ready to blame Gazan anti-semitism on this. This is the first time I have seen your tape, and while I think it does give pause for thought, its appearance now is bad timing. The propaganda, misinformation and blame on Israel and the Jews now is overwhelming. Anything can and will be used against them.

Hello Sue, thank you for your continued correspondence. From my knowledge of history, I can single out two examples of Jewish polymaths who did really well under Muslim administration. The first is Ibn Shaprut. He was primarily a scientist and also Grand Vizier to Caliph Abdul Rahman III of Cordoba. And the second is Rabbi Maimonides, the greatest Jewish Philosopher that ever lived. Maimonides is a product of Muslim Spain. And even though he did eventually leave Spain (possibly due to a pogrom), he found even greener pastures with Sultan Saladin, the Kurdish Muslim ruler of Crusader fame. Saladin appointed Maimonides as his personal physician. And it was also around this time that Maimonides decreed that Jews who couldn't find a synagogue while visiting a foreign country could pray at a Muslim mosque because "God has cleansed idolatry from the hearts of the Ishmaelites." Muslim rulers in Spain also used to keep Jewish garrisons for defending their towns while they were away on expeditions. This to me at least does not seem like Anti-Semitism. Perhaps the root causes of anti-Semitism is from European Christian societies where Jews were seen as "Christ-Killers." Because lest we forget, there was never a Holocaust in Arab and Muslim lands. Arab Jews were proud of their Arab heritage, language, and culture. But they were made to feel so bad about it that rather than being a bridge between Jews and Arabs, they became even more radicalized against Arab Christians and Arab Muslims. This is a long discussion, but I think you're on to something. I'll leave it up to you to come to your own conclusions at the end of your investigations. Hi, thanks for your question. We will need to see at what point in time Maimonides wrote that. Because when one lives to be a Septuagenarian, it's very possible to have views that change with time. The most important thing for me is to note that Maimonides did not have an issue with Muslim religiosity; he stated that Jews can pray inside a mosque. In the 90s she probably studied schoolbooks from the 70s. Show me a society that had no racicm or unawareness of cultural and societal differences back in these times. The more interesting question is how Palestinians and the Islamic world in general teaches their children about Jews.

I find it so interesting, so many Jewish people who either lived in Israel, or not, have been speaking against zionism for decades now and still are trying to bring justice for the people of Palestine. But I have never ever heard of a Palestinian being pro zionism. I think that says it all.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. The best analogy I can give for this is the example of British colonial rule in India. We did an interview in October 2023 with Mr. Kabir Bedi, an Indian film superstar. Mr. Bedi was born in 1946 to an Indian father and an English mother. And his mother had actually sided with India and Mahatma Gandhi's "Quit India" movement against her own countrymen, saying "I love my country (England) but I hate colonialism." In the same vein, given that Palestinians and many modern historians see Zionism as a colonial project - albeit a "settler-colonial" project and not an "exploitation colonialism" project - one would be very hard pressed to find Palestinians who would be pro-Zionism. It is akin to trying to look for pre-independence Indians who were pro-British / pro-Empire / pro-Loyalists. Hope that helps to answer the question. I am a citizen of the United Kingdom, and it was prominent Jewish American thinkers who first introduced me to the Palestinian struggle, followed by similar figures from Israel, and finally Palestinian intellectuals. I first began to question what I was being shown about the issue on mainstream media in my country when I watched an interview with a former Israeli Prime Minister on the BBC one night. It was a seemingly throwaway comment by the former head of state that first made me think twice, yet I often wonder how long it would have taken me to find out the truth if it weren't for those Jewish voices. I still occasionally watch mainstream media coverage of events in the Middle East as if I knew nothing about the subject, and I find the story is still very much presented the same way it was thirty years ago.

I guess everyone has slightly different experiences growing up.. even in the same country. I was born and raised in Israel in 1975.. lived on a very left wing Kibbutz. was proud to be Jewish and Israeli but we were always taught to except and respect other cultures and religions. We were thought to respect human rights and respect diversity. We were taught about the holocaust but also were encouraged to be resilient and not feel like victims. We were taught about our Arab neighbours and even were taught some Arabic from grade 4 as a second language. one memory I have is a school trip in which we went to one of the Arab villages close to our kibbutz and we spent the day playing with Arab kids our age having lunch with them and learning about their culture. We were taught that Israelis and Palestinian should learn to live in peace and that was what we strived for. I think this interview talks about some of the extreme situations maybe. From my experience Israel is not racist and in fact it’s very inclusive and yes there are some issues but overall it is a beautiful country ❤️🇮🇱

And they were treated well by their Jewish neighbors primarily because her school principal fostered a good atmosphere and taught all the things you just said here.
