Hi! Your ply on the fly Turkish spindle video got my trying it and starting to learn this and while I’m spinning I’m finding more of your videos and I so so so appreciate you making and posting these. I’m fostering a toddler (my granddaughter who is three and so all my wheels are locked safely away and I’ve taken a huge re interest in my spindles that I have never really gotten much use of. I’m learning to truly love these and I also have quite a few and plying as I go seems much more fun as well as productive! I have 3 grown daughters and I know two for sure might catch on from my experiences! Just wanted to say thank you a million times over!

@@paulettegaleener6754 Thank you! I’m so glad you are rediscovering and enjoying your spindles. I have a spinning blog at waltin.se/josefinwaltinspinner if you are interested, and an online spinning school at josefinwaltinspinner.teachable.com. In the second half of 2025 my spinning book will be released. Happy spinning!

So neat! Have a renewed interest in the Turkish spindle spinning and hope very much to learn this ply on the fly technique. My grandmother that gave me my love for all textile arts was Austria-Hungarian before coming to America. ❤ I never thought to ask her who taught her to crochet. It’s very interesting that you allow the spindle to hang, spin and balance itself. So fascinating and I’m sure your yarn is very lovely as is your sweater! Thanks for sharing this video!
@josefinwaltin3 ай бұрын
@@paulettegaleener6754 Thank you! The hanging and balancing is possible with a freshly spun single. If the single has been on the spindle for a while, the energy of the yarn would have settled and not trustworthy.

Helpful video. How many people know how to flax dress a distaff?? Flax is a tricky fibre. The music is perfect for the presentation. Better than words.

I'd love to have a go on one of these, I'm *so* bad at long draw currently and this would force me! I can't stop looking at the clock reel though - I have a very similar one but mine has three gears, two of 10 teeth each, the second of which drops a hammer after a complete rotation, so as it makes a 1.5m skein, we've started referring to 150m of yarn as a Bonk. The last gear counts in 16s for some reason but the hammer is missing and it's a bit out of alignment with the others because there were missing teeth. Probably my favourite loppis find, until the surprisingly-good battered wheel.
@RandomAFP4 ай бұрын
...well I was meant to be spinning some random white top which the label fell off into random lace-weight yarn to use for a natural dye session with a friend, but this inspired me so what I've been doing for the last hour or so is carding scraps into rather rubbish rolags and practicing my long draw :D I'm not actually as bad at it as I thought!
@josefinwaltin4 ай бұрын
It was a beautiful opportunity to try the great wheel. Clock reels seem to be hard to find, even the ones without a functioning counter.

@@josefinwaltin Indeed and I've not seen another with three gears when I've searched.

How do you attach the leader to get started?
@josefinwaltin4 ай бұрын
Usually I pull out some fiber from the distaff and roll it into a leader against my thigh and then make a half-hitch or two around the belly of the spindle.

Wow! That's incredible! What are is the wheel "rim" made out of? The design reminds me a lot of Japanese spinning wheels, except bamboo and wood was used.
@josefinwaltin9 ай бұрын
The rims are made of bent wood and joined with a ribbon. The Japanese, Chinese and Indian wheels were way earlier than the medieval European great wheels and inspired the making of them.
