It is once you learn it. But it takes practice in both spinning and carding technique.

Wool, Cotton, or both? I’m still trying, getting better but not very consistent thickness yet. I’m thinking my issue is in the fiber prep.

I'm using wool, but I think cotton would work fine as well. The technique is a good match with short fibers. As you say, it all starts with the preparation of the fiber. The English longdraw requires very well prepared carded rolags. I usually use my hand combs for teasing and then card.
