I don't think it is weird in its context. It is a very efficient way to insert twist in short staple fibers like cotton and yak. The horizontal movement gives you the control of inserting the twist evenly and the vertical the speed to add twist for strength. A suspended spindle would probably feel very weird in that context.

Great video! This is how I use my akha too. It is a good tool for cramped spaces - I have spun with it as a car passenger.

This is beautiful to watch. I'm in the process of transitioning from wool to cotton, and I'm finding getting the slubs smoothed out without pulling the rest of the yarn apart to be tricky. I will try this on an akha spindle.
