The reason the gray one smells like tires is because it is an emergency fire rescue blanket that is chemically treated to make it fire retardant. The chemical is not supposed to wash out. It's not even ment to be washed. It just hangs on the wall until you find yourself in a burning building and need to get out.

So glad I found this! I bought a pair of plaid wool blankets at a thrift shop and they had no labels, but I found the same one on Ebay with a Golden Dawn label. They look and feel excellent. I hope I can find them in an old JC Penney catalog.

I thought I was weird for having six or so. I've thinned my collection - sold a partial wool made in Mex. some years ago. I was hoping you'd give some info. on the Hudson Bay knock offs which are on Etsy. I thought there was a certified Hudson Bay which was actually made in England, but currently can't find verification of this. These are supposed to have a soft finish, and my guess if they are Chinese. The ads are AI written. I've got a Kozy (pink that's why it was given away) and satin trimmed (5 pounds at the Birmingham charity shop in 2002) one both made in Mother England 100 wool, most likely 80s-90s. Also a Mex. made one which was made to compete with the Hudson Bay back in the 90s for the historic reenactor crowd. Tan and brown/gray with trim with a diagonal denim like weave, thick and tough for camping. A great buy. Like your alpaca one, I think ones made in Mex. S Am. etc can be great if they are not made for the tourist trade, or are made to custom specs.

You can get the real deal from a few Ecuador companies that sell on eBay. I’ve gotten a couple from Ecualama.

Just got one of these (the orange/red one on the right) yesterday at an Estate Sale got $18. Thought it was a crazy deal. It’s honestly way thicker than my 3 Pendleton wool blankets. But it shed a lot.

I have one with the same colors. It belonged to my husband's grandmother. We have had it for at least 45 years. It was yellow with cigarette smoke and in very used condition but it still has its tag, though it's different than the one on your blanket.

My Research leads me to the understanding that JC Penney Polar Star Golden Dawn Blankets were manufactured by Pendelton Woolen Mills. No slouches in their own rights in the wool blanket Industry.

Looks like they are more difficult to find these days, and the price has gone up! It could be a result of the war over there. I found them in several different army surplus outlets in Utah and Idaho, and on ebay.

For 25 years I re-enacted the American Fur Trade era and attended many Rendezvous of the early 1800s period. The blankets of choice sold there were the Early's Whitney Point blankets made in England and shipped to North America for the Indian Trade for mostly beaver pelts and other furs. They are 100% new wool in various sizes, colors, and weights. I became a blanket trader for a few years and gave many of these beautiful high quality blankets as gifts to my family and friends. I never used a sleeping bag and tried to be as historically correct as possible. I still use these blankets at home during Winter and sleep toasty warm. The company has been in business since the 1600s.

Thanks. I found out about point blankets when I found one in an antique shop. Based on the information that I could find on the label style and the color pattern, it was made between mid 1920s and early 1930s.??? It's a 3 and a half point indigo and black. It is my most prized wool blanket.
