26:48 So you were thinking of Conjure Fey. There’s a difference between the Conjure and Summon spells. The Summon spells were in Tasha’s and you summon a creature of the type with a unique stat block. So no pixies. And now all the Conjure spells have been changed to be almost completely different and don’t function the same way.
@Mrryn
@Mrryn Ай бұрын
And that was specifically because of the goofy abuse cases, like Conjuring pixies who then Polymorph the entire party into T-rexes. Or even just Conjuring so many low CR creatures that they outnumber every other creature involved in combat thrice over and proceed to bog down initiative, swarm block creatures (since you can't move through an enemy's space), and then just spam rolls regardless of crap modifier because you'll eventually roll high and land either a poisonous bite or grapple and/or have them grant you or each other the Help action. They are absurdly busted and I'm (DND) beyond glad they have been completely reworked.

For Ranger, when they say it's a new class they mean for the PHB. Yes, this was in Tasha's but it was optional material and not every table allows optional material (I know this probably won't be the case for people here but it is the case at times) so putting it into the PHB means it's now baseline and every table can assume they can use this now.

45:59 Pretty much all of the features that affect your Hunter’s Mark should move down levels. Maybe Hunter’s Mark shouldn’t have concentration, which means the one feature should be replaced, but then there should be a new capstone. And the damage should go up to a d8 at level 10.

Correction: I realized that you guys had already done the Paladin episode, and I missed it! So, I just listened to it and was very surprised that Will had actually been really gracious about the whole "smite as a spell" thing 😊 My personal gripes with it that smite can now be counterspelled, and also that some multiclassing (like pally barbarian) have become unusable. I wish they would have just added "can be used once per turn" to the old smite... Although maybe they nerfed counterspell as well. The rest of the Paladin changes are indeed pretty good, especially more channel divinities per rest

I'm pretty sure Hasbro's focus for 2024 D&D is to make it cumbersome to play on other VTT style platforms. How weapons now have properties martial classes can unlock to do dynamic things indicate they want a more difficult to track combat system which I'm SURE their VTT will completely track EVERYTHING on a click of an attack button. With that in mind it's no wonder the Ranger is stripped of all non-VTT features like tracking and other very flavorful Ranger abilities, and reduced them to just a damage focused role.

Speaking of collabs, I know it is a very niche subject, but it IS one that is universal outside of DnD to all TTRPGs and RPGs in general. Would an episode on optimization with Treantmonk make sense? The dude has such a cool analytical mind when it comes to breaking stuff down, I always find it a refreshing change of pace, even if I don't necessarily agree with pure optimization as a strategy. Y'all could talk about things like "when do YOU optimize, and when do YOU go for a character concept", "how do you DM for a game where you have optimancers at the table? How about when one person is, but others aren't so you can keep the game fun and engaging", "how can you optimize some parts of a character and not others", I don't know, stuff like that! Find a way to find the middle ground between fluff and crunch. We always talk about frustrations in monster stat blocks, so maybe talking to someone super well-versed in the crunchy side of player creation could be a help to brainstorm how to make player combats more engaging and challenging, or "how to challenge" optimized builds in a way more interesting than just "punches harder, takes more punches".

My Fix for the Rangers Favored Terrain. Natural Explorer Also at 1st level, you are particularly familiar with one type of natural environment and are adept at traveling and surviving in such regions. Choose one type of favored terrain: arctic, coast, desert, forest, grassland, mountain, swamp, the Underdark, Undersea, or Urban. While in your favored terrain Animal Handling, Investigation, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival checks are made at advantage. While traveling for an hour or more in your favored terrain, you gain the following benefits: - Difficult terrain doesn’t slow your group’s travel. - Your group can’t become lost except by magical means. - Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger. - If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace. - When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would. - While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area. At 6th level while in your favored terrain you cannot be surprised while you are conscious, and you gain advantage on initiative roles. In addition, you may choose second favored terrain. You must have spent at least 24 hours traveling through the terrain that is selected. At 10th level you have learned to use your favored terrain to your advantage in combat. While in your favored terrain you always have the advantage of half cover and you gain +2 to hit on your attack roles. In addition, you may choose a third favored terrain. You must have spent at least 24 hours traveling through the terrain that is selected. Capstone ability. All terrains are considered your favored terrains

First and foremost, before I see any of the video I wanna say, the new Ranger is not bad. It’s just not on the same level of the new versions of other classes. And even then, a high level Ranger will still be fun with the new classes. The new Ranger is better than the 2014 PHB and it is slightly better than the Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything version. It’s just upsetting that it hasn’t been brought to the level of everyone else.

2024 Ranger is an enhanced Tasha's Ranger, including "Favored Enemy" the only remnant of 2014 Ranger. Hunter's Mark & Tasha's Favored Foe is now homogenized and the features at 13th & 17th levels had no new features except for gaining access to higher Ranger Spells. Also, if the Playtest of Hunter's Mark goes through, its upcast gains additional damage die & damage is about the main way to lose Concentration. Use the free casting on mobs and Upcasted on mini bosses and bosses. The new: 1. Weapon Masteries 2. Ritual Casting 3. Swap Spells after long rest instead of level up 4. Additional Fighting Styles 5. Two more Expertise TLDR: Not using Hunter's Mark is identical to not using Tasha's "Favored Foe." Let that sink in.

37:46 Just an FYI. Rangers were casters in AD&D and 2e. They were not in the D&D basic game. In 1e and 2e, rangers cast Magic User (Wizard today) and Druid spells but the spells were limited but they had skills and martial abilities then too. Paladins always had a steed same as Rangers had a band of creatures and NPC characters types that followed them.

I play rangers almost exclusively. This is an upgrade to the ranger class. Optimizers will still hate it because it is MAD (It’s always been MAD) but on the whole it’s is a wonderfully powerful class if you know how to play it. I don’t usually judge a class based on how much damage they can to but painting by the numbers I do as much damage and sometimes more than other classes at the same level except the Uber optimized nova builds. HM becomes a good option at higher levels because the advantage you gain from its use and it doesn’t drop due to damage at a certain point. The base class at lvl 20 is a variation of the Guardian of Nature Spell which is a lvl 4 transmutation spell, the difference is you pick a target to have advantage on your attacks at higher levels. The ranger subclasses also have damage boosts baked into the subclasses that stack with HM and their martial attacks as well as their spell boosted attacks, granted it is once per turn but now the Paladin gets to feel that burn with smite. Those thinking they are locked into using HM at low levels, it’s not true except for the hunter sub-class…. That sub class his hard wired for HM…. The other sub classes don’t require it’s use since they are different in flavor like the Fey wanderer is about chaos and trickery who has summon Fey for free when you get access to the spell and it’s not doesn’t require concentration if used for 1 minute….. so you can summon Fey twice and let chaos reign in combat with a concentration and non concentration summon running at the same time. WotC transitioned the Ranger into a new class with some half baked flavor in 5e and didn’t do a good job of giving it an identity until Tasha’s. OG ranger was a skirmisher, scout, and archer. They did not have spell casting until lvl 8 in 1e through 3.5e, I’m researching 4e since I have never played it…. 5e made it a caster. If you want to play a martial ranger….. play a fighter (They took the AD&D UA Ranger updates for multiple attacks and put it in the fighter class). The 5e Ranger can do those things but they can do much more since Tasha’s gave them their new identity as the scout/explorer class. They are linguistic experts that can hold their own in and out of a fight. Some subclasses are also able to tank damage on a reaction so they can be rather hardy.

46:46 Well I can answer that, my man. Rather simple: it didn't. Because it was never in the playtest. This entire version of the Ranger, with multiple class abilities centered around scaling Hunter's Mark specifically, was never a part of any version of the playtest Ranger. Hell, the last playtest packets made available for feedback that had anything to do with the Ranger was in #6 out of 8 total packets, where Foe Slayer let you add your Wis mod to an attack roll of an attack that misses your Hunter's Mark target (an unlimited times) and any attack that hits your HM target you add your Wis mod to the damage. And that was in the same playtest where they changed Hunter's Mark to only deal bonus damage on the first hit per turn and upcasting increasing not only duration but also number of damage die to a max of 3d6. But they also gave Rangers Conjure Barrage and Conjure Volley for free at levels 9 and 17 as always prepared spells. I genuinely think the designers just...really hate the ranger. So absurdly hesitant to give them anything interesting and, if they do, they either chicken out and pull away or they nerf something else around it to the ground as compensation. For reference, in playtest #2, they released the first version of the Ranger that not only gave Hunter's Mark for free, but it didn't count against your number of prepared spells, and you didn't have to concentrate on it with it lasting the full duration...at level 1. And that one hilariously did have the Foe Slayer from here where it changes the d6 to d10, but back then the capstone was at level 18 and it still worked on old HM rules where it applied to every hit. They also introduced the new Two Weapon Fighting rules where the off hand attack no longer took a bonus action for Light weapons. That lasted one playtest with TWF changed was reverted and shifted to the Nick Weapon Mastery immediately and Ranger losing concentration-less HM forever.

Most important thing: Happy 400th Episode, Dungeoncast!!!!!!! All Praise to Demogorgon (Shout out to Demogorgon)!!!!!!! The 5.5 Wizard is a positive for me. While there are some that think that the 5E Wizard was THE best class in the game, most people (including myself) feel that the Wizard was one of the best classes in the game. It just needed some tweaks to handle a few sticking points wizard players found over the past 10 years, and WotC generally did that. I am particularly happy with the improvements to the Illusionist, as that subclass was so dependent on how the DM utilized illusions in their games that the player could be absolutely amazing at one table and one of the worst characters at another table. The 5.5 Ranger is the tale of two polar opposites. When it comes to their class futures that are not about Hunters Mark, most Ranger players thought the Tasha options were much better than the 5E Ranger features, so it is an improvement to move those into the base class. On the other hand, I rarely play the Ranger and I am shocked at the 5.5 Ranger features that center on Hunter's Mark and am borderline horrified at the new 20th level feature. The ultimate form of the Ranger, their Ultra Super Saiyan form if you will, is that they deal 2 more damage per hit on average to the target of their Hunter's Mark??? Needless to say, I will be homebrewing fixes for those specific features, and it will be interesting to see other homebrew fixes that people present on videos. As a Bard main, I am very interested to see how William and Brian react to the 5.5 Bard. Levels 1-9, I am generally extremely happy with. After giving it a lot of thought, I think I am happy with the new version of Magical Secrets as they gave the feature two expansions to go with the one restriction.

@@syvajarvi2289 First of all, props to you for being a Ranger player. It is a really cool class that I wish got more love than it does. I totally do see the argument you are making, and it is a good argument. The problem for me is two-fold. First, the make Hunter's Mark a core feature of the class at level 1 and then do not upgrade it until level 13. Personally, I think that is way too long to wait for that upgrade. Second, the biggest complaint I hear from Ranger players is that they feel discouraged from using other concentration spells. While I am going to wait until I have the 5.5 PHB in my hands so that I can read all the fine print, here is my initial feeling of how I would homebrew a fix. 1) Keep the Level 1 Favored Enemy feature exactly how it is. 2) At Level 8, the Ranger can cast one additional concentration spell while also concentrating on Hunter's Mark. If the Ranger loses concentration, both spells are ended. 3) Keep Level 13 feature Relentless Hunter the same but add that Hunter's Mark now adds an additional d8 instead of a d6. 4) Keep Level 17 feature Precise Hunter the same but add that Hunter's Mark now adds an additional d10 instead of a d8. 5) Change the Level 20 feature Foe Slayer to now say that Hunter's Mark now adds an additional d12 instead of a d10. I might and probably will change my mind after thinking more about this and seeing how others approach this. However, I currently think this would be my fix.
@syvajarvi2289
@syvajarvi2289 Ай бұрын
@@peteraguilar7600 I can see why players may feel pressured into a particular play style. When I first started playing 5e I was use to the OG ranger and tried like crazy to play it the same way. What I found is that 5e rangers were a utility caster that could be played as a martial but was best at mid or long range with most of its power built into the sub classes. The 2014 rules were very DM dependent in several ways but the class as a whole was fairly strong with a two or three level dip into fighter or rogue to shore up its issues. Tasha’s rules improved things and made the ranger very mobile which was part of the flavor of the class but was not very well defined, now it’s permanent in the rules and also helps define the Ranger as a linguist. Tasha’s rules had a similar feature to HM baked into deft explorer, still a BA, still concentration, but no HM tracking feature so it was actually weaker than HM. Basically what they did was give free castings of HM, which is better except for the spell immunities at higher level but even then it only effects a small percentage of campaigns. It also doesn’t change that Zephyr strike, arguably, is still a better spell at lvl 1 than HM, same with hail of thorns….. both BA and both concentration. Until lvl 13, HM is just a value added feature except for the hunter and beast master subclass unless WotC baked something into the Fey wanderer and Gloom Stalker that relies on the spell and as far as we know the Fey wanderer has been largely untouched. I also see this as freeing a feat since at lvl 13 HM no longer loses concentration, so I don’t need War Caster and can take an ASI or another value added feat without worrying to much about losing concentration on at least one spell in my kit. Depending on the game that I run, think high level, I would be looking at the spell immunity rules and adjust them to resistances for half casters. This would also help the Paladin and Artificer since they have the same spell level limitations regarding spell immunity and all three have access to searing smite or ranged damage spells as they level up. I also had an issue with the lack of building into HM sooner when they first announced the class. I had hoped they would have went a different direction but then I looked at how I play the 5e Ranger and saw everything that I do was boosted in some way including healing spells like cure wounds and Healing spirit. I use Zephyr strike more than hunter’s mark for a lvl 1 spell and hail of thorns and lightning arrow as a leveled spell before I run out of spell slots. Favored foe, and now HM, is more of a fall back spell/feature once your better options have been used up.

52:08 I believe that if they mixed some features from Monster Slayer Subclass, Blood Hunter's base class features, throw in some 4e (like they've been doing). And the ranger would have a more solid identity

How does this sound? **Favored Enemy** When you hit a creature with an attack roll, you can call on your mystical bond with nature to mark the target as your favored enemy for 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell). If the target drops to 0 hit points, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature. The first time on each of your turns that you hit the favored enemy and deal damage to it, including when you mark it, you can increase that damage by 1d4. In addition, when you mark you immediately learn whether the creature has any damage immunities, resistances, or vulnerabilities and what they are. If the creature is hidden from divination magic, you sense that it has no damage immunities, resistances, or vulnerabilities. You can use this feature to mark a favored enemy a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. This feature’s extra damage increases when you reach certain levels in this class: to 1d6 at 6th level and to 1d8 at 14th level. Then at levels 9, 13, and 17 give them an array of options feeding off of that. OR make each Subclass play off of it Ala Rogue sneak attack or Bardic Inspiration?

Happy 400! I feel like hunters mark should be both a feature and if it’s so central to ranger identity scale like martial arts dice. Hell maybe give them alternate hunters mark like the paladin has alternate smites. Also shout out to Comic Pop, also demogorgon.

OK, here me out... Get rid of Hunter's Mark, the spell. Give rangers a "Primal Strike" (basically stealing Divine Smite except it does Fire damage), and then you have a feature (we'll call it "Hunter's Quarry," because I like that and it fits) that gives you advantage on Perception and Survival checks to find a creature you've damaged with "Primal Strike". And just plain give the beast master's companion it's own turn sharing the Ranger's initiative. I mean, I know, ACTION ECONOMY! but Druids get access to Summon Beast at the same level which pretty much does the same thing.

40:48 Or cast a different spell first until it’s broken or you don’t want to use it anymore. I don’t think that’s the worst thing in the world.

Ranger is most used by new players, theres alot of popculture whit bow users. and people just love fighting whit an animal companion. EDIT: af few examples: LOTR: Legolas, Aragorn, Shadow of war game: The ranger The blade of Galadriel or the Dwarf.. Warcraft/WOW: Voljin Zu'jin Illidan and Rexxar. or just the hunter class in general. They even have a better working hunters mark. Hell even even LOL gives examples whit there oldest hero's: Ash and Vayne or Rambo and the Katmis.. idk how to write her name from Hunger Games could be called a rangers. This doesn't really translate well and it just seems like there half stuck in the WOW experience of the hunter and don't know how to get away from it or to port it. I am so sorry they droped the ball on this class you could have them negate the acttion to swith weapons. make collosal slayer do more damage she smaller the PC is compared to the target hell emp the mark damage aka small to medium +1 dice incrementaly going up... hold on I should not beposting this. Do say when you make those ranger classes I will find the money to pay on patron just to get them. I am absolutely sure both of you Wil do a better job at this then wizards. Congrats on 400 episodes, just so you know when I send some of your vids to my party of totaly new players to explain clases and some monsters and gods. They understood it alot better then when I explained it. So having someone there who legit doesnt know helps alot. Also convinces alot better then beeing new and not knowing isn't bad because at one point everyone didn't know what they where doing. Keep up the good work.. wow this post got a lot bigger then expected.

Wotc literally cannot fathom a strong ranger, and it's baffling. I've heard so many great ideas from different people, Will had ideas in this video that were on point, and yet they somehow constantly take it out at the knees. So disappointing because ranger is such a cool and flavorful class. It just needs a couple little tweaks to be right, but they're afraid to do it.

Totally disagree with this trend of giving every class the SAME features. Expertise was a Rogue/Bard thing. Giving out skill bonuses to every class just to make em feel better in outside combat situations is dumb. It just leads to watering everyone down and making them all samey....which is just dull. I never tell anyone NOT to play a class. If they want wizard right off the bat and can learn it, everything else is easy. Also, its NOT that complicated. Esp if you are starting at level 1 to 3, there arent that many spells and there is ample information and help likely at the table. What are you saying, again.....dont listen to this dont multi class....its fine. Really, I think people talk up the complexity of DnD when its REALLY not that hard.

If you want to play a Ranger, play a different game. That's my fix for it. Or get permission from the DM to use the Tales of the Valiant Ranger instead, it is so much better than Crawford/Perkins crap.

I hate wizards. The class is the most antagonistic to the DM because of its spell list and most reliant on the DM to allow their bullshit, and the one that is most reliant on their spell list and has the most DM banned spells. The wizard is all about removing the fun from combat through abusing spells to remove challenge or remove DM action. Fix the spell list to remove that bullshit and give more 'fun but fair" options, and you fix the wizard. Will it be a nerf to the spell list? Most likely, but the game itself will be far better for it.
