All good points. Luckily this is just a hobby and my way of giving back rather than a business or a way to make money (I already have a successful business of my own).

Very helpful video but my question is how to make assumptions of future growth rate?
@contentbyed
@contentbyed Ай бұрын
That is definitely the hardest thing to estimate. I would take into account past performance, the competitive landscape (ie what competitors are doing), macro economic assumptions, etc.

hi bro, sorry but I was lost on the initial step. I think maybe some information on how you decided on which fsli's to look at and what companies you are using would go a long way. this is all very abstract and, while edited well, doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me as a beginner

Thanks for the note. Will try to answer here and hopefully it makes sense. The valuation metrics chosen depend on the business type - if it’s a traditional business this might be EBITDA multiples, whereas a tech business (such as software) is likely a revenue multiple. As for companies chosen, you have to find companies that are as similar as possible. So if for example you’re trying to value a healthcare software company, you look for other healthcare software companies that have sold and the multiples they sold for. Using a tool like CapIQ or PitchBook really helps in this research.

Video is gem but what about sharing the template?

I think the best way to really master these techniques is to build the spreadsheet from scratch. Using a template only teaches you about 20% of approaching the problem.

How to actually get the correct growth rate instead of hard coding
@contentbyed
@contentbyed 2 ай бұрын
Good question and probably the hardest thing to determine / assume. Lots of people use historical financials to look at previous year growth rates and base their projections off of that. Others might take market data to look at how quickly the overall market is growing and make assumptions about market share to determine the growth rate. It isn’t easy and that’s why lots of folks might run different scenarios as well.

@@contentbyed is it safe for me to think in the end you are guessing the growth using market data.(Idk much about finance don't judge me pls)

Unfortunately when you’re forecasting anything, essentially it is a guess. It’s just a case of how educated a guess it is based on the market and historical performance.

Can you make a video on how to make educated “guesses” for growth rate? What elements to consider, what to watch or search to predict market trends, etc.

would this not be 95%? [(10,000-500-500+500)/10,000] = 0.95
@contentbyed
@contentbyed 3 ай бұрын
The upsell wasn’t 500, but was 1000. So it would basically offsets the downsell of 500 and the churn of 500. So the formula is 10000-500-500+1000/10000. Make sense?

Great video! I'm curious though, in the early stages of launching Sampford Advisors, how did you approach estimating client acquisition without the benefit of an established reputation? I imagine it's much more difficult to estimate than foot traffic analysis in a competitor's coffee shop.

You’re right, it’s much harder with an advisory business to be able to figure this stuff out. But I was lucky enough to immediately start with 1-2 clients which gave me comfort that the business would be successful. I also did a lot of market research and competitor analysis to determine market size and if there was a gap in the market (there was luckily)

How would you recommend finding forecasting assumptions for complex company structures. For example retail companies with many products/changing lines/growing geographical area/etc . Additionally how much do you emphasise macro factors into these assumptions.

Too many managers procrastinate and do not give constructive feedback. As a new business owner, I must remind myself not to take things personally. Doing what is best for the business can also be best for your team. My team is virtual for now.
