You know what is faster, and even looks better? Just use mental ray's preset water/ocean within the architectural and design material. With that you get almost photorealistic water, and it also renders fast as well. Now of course it won't have real geometric waves (it will be all inside the texture), so it is ideal for stuff where the camera is around 5+ metres above the water at all times, it wouldn't be ideal for a camera that drops down near water level at like only 1 metre above water level (since at that point it starts to become obvious there is no actual geometric depth). Of course Autodesk removed Mental Ray, since they got sick of paying licencing to Nvidia, as a result modern 3DS Max has Arnold renderer, which is something Autodesk purchased outright off some startup guy from Spain who was producing it with Sony originally. Arnold is slow and isn't very effective for the average user on their computer. All is not lost however, Vray still exists, the third party renderer. Vray is basically at least as good as Mental ray (in fact, probably a little better than Mental ray), therefore Vray in my opinion is the best choice for a modern version of Max. I still use an older version of Max to have access to Mental Ray, because I find that Mental ray is so mature as a renderer that it has so many options for just about anything, you have so much sampling control (you can set sampling contrast per colour), you can really make Mental Ray render very fast and achieve high quality, you have caustics, advanced reflections and refraction, so many preset materials, subsurface scattering, HDR etc. The only things that don't readily exist are a powerful motion blur system (however that is easily added in post, in After Effects with Pixel Motion Blur). As well as a good depth of field system (however that can also be added in post if the scene is simple), in a complex scene adding depth of field can't as easily be done in post with single frames (but you instead render out the distant stuff in one set of frames and the foreground stuff with transparency layers as separate frames, and via this you can easily add depth of field in post as well). One of the most important things I found as a creator, is practicality and speed. If the end viewer can't tell the difference, then there is no use wasting hours or days doing something that isn't noticed much in the final product.

The Biped structure panel only appears when your in 'figure mode' .... You'll need to press the 'figure mode' button to get started.. help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2024/ENU/?guid=GUID-1360F08E-5976-4752-B775-D1571A817A1F

How to make waviness on a glass surface? Like the windows of of a bulding's glass facade. They are not exactly like mirrors but instead reflections are slightly distorted. I tried with putting a noise map in the Normal (Bump) slot but it doesnt seem to work out.

Each window is at a slightly different angle. You can simulate this by - twisting each bit of glass in the mesh - randomising the UVs on the glass so the each window has its own UVs there are some other tricks but these are the easiest

@@muhamadhakimisabri9227 I think I remember an older version of Max having a glitch in the BIPED UI . the buttons are there but some areas of the UI were rolled up hiding their location . I think if you click around the right area on the UI you might be able to expand the UI and reveal the buttons again.. ( not a great solution but hopeful it may help )

Hi! I'm trying it with Point Cache but it's not working for me (3dsMax 2022). With normal transforms it works, but with Point Cache I haven't been successful so far. Should it work? Do you otherwise know any other script / tool for this? Or any reference / documentation in order to write my own script? Thanks! P.S.: My objective is to get keyframes out of the Point Cache anim.

This won't work with a point Cache anim. Animation data ( in all software ) works on different levels of the mesh . My script works on the object transform matrix and the point cache works on the object vertices

The object transform matrix is a bit like a jacket on a coat hanger. The jacket is the mesh of the object, and the coat hanger is the transform matrix . If i move the coat hanger the jacket moves with it . I could put a jumper on the hanger and it would move in the same way even though the mesh is complete different. However transform matrix is rigid , the way the coat bends and flexes is not stored. to store this kind of flexing you need a point Cache.

The issue I'm facing is that I would need to remove a few frames from a Point Cache animation, but I don't have keyframes in 3Ds Max for this type of animation. Does it come to your mind any Point Cache / Vertex Anim editor? It's not a crucial thing, but it would be tidier & better to export the final model without these redundant frames.
