Stupid question, but I don’t assume this would be an optimal board to learn to ride switch, with the swallow tail?
@Drift-Products6 сағат бұрын
correct. You don't need a twin to ride switch, but this definitely won't be best. It's not just the outline, it's the shape of the entire board. It's really only meant to go one way.

@ thanks! And for the Jones surf series, would you recommend “the mind expander” for the best option for a freestyle board, conductive for learning to ride switch proficiently and the park as well? I love my storm chaser but I am also looking for a more versatile option to add as well.

Superb review Brigs. I have a 162 (6'4"/220lbs) and love the SS. Haven't had it in powder yet but after a weeks riding resort you can sense within the 1st 30 seconds that the SS is a real keeper. ✅Pretty surfy ride ✅✅ and can carve reasonably okay on piste but you can push the flat top past it's extreme with aggressive slashy turns, which is a nice thing.✅✅ ✅
@Drift-Products3 күн бұрын
Thanks for adding your take! I’m not sure I really captured what makes this fun for me to carve so I appreciate your thoughts adding to the overall description.
@Craig.643 күн бұрын
@@Drift-Products Not sure what length you rode if not both but the SS has a pretty long EE for it's size and a tight SCR at 7.3m @156 and 7.6m @162, so I feel you get the bonus hold for carving from the longer edge with that turny joy from tighter SCR. You can see that tighter sidecut on your review when you hold the SS up on its side. It's probably just one of those things that by joining all the right ingredients into a profile it produces something pretty damn sweet.

Yep. I rode the 162 and the 156, but I didn't get as much time on the 162 as I would've liked. I think it would be the better size for me in general.

If this isn’t your top pick for powder board what is? Do you have a favorite Resort powder board vs backcountry powder board?
@Drift-Products4 күн бұрын
Hard to pick one but on a perfect day I’d probably grab a Powder Glider, Uberegg, or Bataleon Surfer over this. But I’m being pretty picky. I do think certain pow boards are better in the resort where you have some variable terrain. It’s not a big deal but on a resort pow day I don’t mind something a little shorter, stiffer, and maybe some camber just to handle the chop that inevitably comes. In the best backcountry, it’s all about float. Longer, wider, and more rocker on the very best days. But don’t get me wrong, any good powder board will be fun in either situation. It’s just when you get real picky, you cater to the differences.

Thank you for your review. I'm a Burton guy, HTH 160, Custom 158 and 3D Fish 161. At 200 lbs , would the 150 Short Stop be a good choice for steep pow ,trees and groomer carving? My HTH feels a little stiff at times, where as me being at the high end of the weight range for the Custom feels pretty good. Also, is the Short Stop similar to the Korua Dart? Thanks

Thanks! How tall are you and what’s your foot size? I’d would lean towards the 156 personally but hard to know without those other details. The dart is stiffer and has aggressive camber. The Short Stop is a more playful carver. Pretty similar in the pow depending on what size you get, but. I think you get a bit more width from the dart if I remember right.

Got it in some heavy (for Utah) powder over the holidays and it floats effortlessly. I also ride it centered or even a little forward like you mentioned. I found it plows through tracked out terrain pretty easily too. Just got back from Banff where we got unexpected powder one day at Sunshine and frigid temps the next two at Lake Louise. So, fast firm groomers for the most part, with some bumped up bowls off the back side. I haven't been able to get it in the trees much yet, but it's definitely maneuverable for its size in those bumps. I don't find it holds me back on the groomers much. Thanks for this review!

Great content and informative review! Riding 2025 alchemist in 160. Switched after totaling my 2024 flagship pro 161. 185 pounds, size 9 boot, usually ride with dakine vest that adds 15 pounds (backcountry safety equipment). Goofy stance +18, -6, 22 width, utilizing .75 setback incorporated into board design. Board is a rocket ship and nothing is more fun to ride hard and fast. Had about 10 perfect days on it until Day 4 of heli trip with Great Canadian in BC. I was too gassed for my typical aggressive style of riding and style required to enjoy the board to full potential. Temps were also super cold -10F. Had just gotten a new wax job 3 days prior. All the speed and maneuverability seemed to disappear with serious cold. Sticky and slow on the flats (had to use collapsible poles to navigate in flats which is a first for me in downhill situation). Maybe would have been different if I was well rested and riding normally but the extreme cold seem to significantly change board performance, style, feel in powder but especially in tree traverse. Performance was fine when straight lining pillows. Does this have to do with new space tech materials? Other ideas? I’d like this board to be my backcountry daily driver but maybe need to bring out another option in similar conditions when I’m not riding at 100%. Other options in quiver are flagship pro 2025 164, jones project x 159, stratos split 159, Cardiff crane 162. I had stratos split with me on the trip. Prob should have used that last day but didn’t want to sacrifice performance in pillows with a split board. Any thoughts or suggestions ? Appreciate you! 🙏🏻
@Drift-Products7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the love. Sounds like you get to ride some great terrain! I wouldn't worry too much about the performance on the cold day... unless you put on a wax specifically for super cold temps, in my experience, every board base feels kinda bad when it's super cold. I do agree with the idea of a backcountry board you don't have to push so hard. A few that come to mind for me that kinda mix free ride and pow and shred without being crazy demanding: Cardiff Powgoda, Amplid Surfari, Rome Ravine Pro, Korua Pin Tonic, Bataleon Cameleon. All of these do great in pow and are happy being pushed pretty hard. They're also solid on groomers and handle crud pretty well as far as it goes, but in my eperience are less demanding than the Alchemist.

It’s about 274. The cameleon is not as tapered as those others. In a perfect world I’d love this to be just a touch longer and wider but it’s good. No Stranda for me yet sadly but the Powgoda is softer, surfier, more setback and more tapered. It’s definitely more of a pow board than this. In my experience, as far as float and glide go, the Lone Wolf was their best powder board. Ashamed that they removed it from the lineup. The OG Stormchaser is better than the Lone Wolf at steep tight trees and making tighter turns. I never felt that it floated that much more than a hovercraft. I always felt that the Stormchaser could have used some camber, even if it was just a small back foot camber. However, the more I ride the OG stormchaser, it becomes easier for me to adapt to variable conditions outside of powder, and in turn makes me like and appreciate the board more and more.

How does it compare to the Korua Dart now that it has some camber?
@Drift-Products16 күн бұрын
The storm chaser is the sort of board where the camber helps it do better outside of the pow but it’s still mostly a pow board. The Korua on the other hand, is about as much a carving board as it is a pow board. Stiffer, more aggressive, more camber… both awesome, just depends what you want to emphasize.
@spqm16 күн бұрын
The redesigned storm chaser is actually my favorite board currently! I totally hear your complaints though. For a dedicated powder board I'm sure the full rocker design has an edge, and the lack of bigger sizes is definitely a big bummer especially as they're trying to make this board more approachable with camber. That being said, I find that board insanely fun on the groomers and all around the resort. My specs are pretty close to yours- I got the 152 and this thing is nimble! It does awesome between the trees, has a good edge hold, and the carving has a lot of personality. I only had the chance to take it in 7-8 inches of Colorado powder (and tons of dry days) and the float was excellent for how small this board is. It does particularly well in low angle powder. I ended up getting a storm wolf on top of the SC and my gripe is with that one if anything. I like the SC being a small and nimble powder board, and would love to see the storm wolf in 1-2 sizes above 162. Still absolutely love how both ride but yeah it's a bummer they don't have more sizes like they do for the rest of their lineups

I don't think it'd do really well in deep powder unless you're in steep terrain- it's more of a charger and down the line carver than it is a good all around powder board. That being said, I really love the way it turns and how stable it is at speed. Would love to see your review on it some day and hear how you compare it to the dart

Definitely not against what you described. Just seems a little narrow for my tastes. Not a dealbreaker, just not ideal at 27.5 underfoot.

Completely agree. Camrocker is great but would be nice if Jones had kept a few unapologeticly powder boards in their lineup.

i feel this way too and yet constantly run into the "camber is better at everything" crowd. :/
