Technically to travel those 4-25cm over the outside of the track where no one can stand versus going the long way with all the scary blockers

hi! I don't understand the part at 13:00, is it what it's supposed to look like "in game"? or is it the C-shape that we shouldn't be doing? TIA and also thank you so much for those videos! they're helping me a lot

Good question. I think this is close-ish to what you want it to look like in game. In a wall you want to be narrower and a less C-shape swoopy (so as not to trip people), though it's easier to be narrower with a little less speed. Although my plows could indeed be narrower here (and I'm not sure the camera angle/wide lens help 😁), what's good about what I am doing is keeping the "standing" leg straight ahead (my left leg here) and really talking my weight onto my left so I start the slide (wheels of right foot actually drifting/sliding sideways for a brief second) and then putting on the weight/brakes to get the chatter and brake. This means I'm fully in control of my weight and stopping power. To say the same thing in the "negative" sense, you don't want your right and left legs going off the straight-forward path, and you don't want to be much wider than I am here, in both cases you might trip people and you will start splitting your weight between your two feet which will make it harder to stop and make you dependent on your wheels/the floor, not your control.

Lol, I can do a power slide but not a plow
@professorlegs

That probably means you are able to get your weight far enough into your front leg to get your back leg sliding on a powerslide. That's awesome, lot's of people struggle with powerslides and always have their weight split! To plow, you just have to reverse (most of the weight on the back/standing leg, so that your front leg can slide).

This is the best tutorial on KZbin for hockey stops on quads - most other videos fail to demonstrate the fundamental mechanics of the hockey stop, or straight up give the wrong advice. Although, the next most natural move after a hockey stop is generally a backwards crossover to sprint as your stance is seated into your heals. Shifting your weight to your toes for a forward crossover costs time and is hard to do if there's a blocker in front of you obstructing your forward momentum.

I'm hoping you make more videos! I really enjoy the science and derby combo you provide. I found your channel and binged all of your episodes and shared with a teammate who also loves the science aspect. I'm sure it's a lot of work making these, but wanted you to know there are ppl who follow and like your content! 😊

Thank you! The main problem is I hate editing :D I've got a new flow and trying to clear out some of the backlog. Hoping to get to some more advanced stuff soon.

I joined my local derby practices to improve my skating ability. But it is the awesome breakdowns you do that help me understand body position and what joints I need to work with (internal hip rotation, ugh!) Thanks Professor Legs!
