I wish my lens would come out so easily! Mine has sticky seal that is super difficult to get this apart. I will try a heat gun. Thanks for the tip.

Cutting that outer lip makes all the difference. After messing with heat and cutting in different ways, I just damaged the housing. Now I’m going to make a detailed video on what you’re doing here, thanks for uploading this!

Why I'm here: I replaced my adjusters using the ship-in-a-bottle no-cut method. One of the adjusting screws was stuck and needed lubrication. A few drops of oil made their way to the inside of the lens, and that was all she wrote. Lots of time, isopropyl alcohol, and ingenuity weren't enough to get the lens clean. A hard job, wasted. Thanks for this! I was going to use my Dremel rotary but you had a better idea.

It's actual top sheet material that I had custom dye-sublimation printed by a custom ski/board shop. I forget their name, but if you Google it you may find someone offering a similar service

No these are factory lights. Ones produced before mid-2002 have bakeable sealant, not the permanent type

@ hungryforspeed thanks for the insight. I figured it would be the bearing, Im looking to source another diff from my local part yard soon. I may use a 740i for a donor if i cant find a 540. My next question is I have a manual vehicle Dose it matter if the donor is auto or manual?

112285art this was a bad bearing on diff input shaft. If there is play, the bearing is bad.

I have a 2002 manual 530i. What I thought it was a release/throw-out bearing noise it proved to be a driving shaft/differential play as when I release or even when pressing the clutch there's noise underneath going towards the back of the car. My mechanic noticed a play in the driveshaft - once he rotates with the hand the drive shaft underneath he noticed the same play in the differential. He said that it's normal for a used car and my play is very minimal. However my car has only 122k so it is bad because the old owner didn't know how to change the gears releasing the clutch too quickly. I am looking now to buy a new differential - 2.93 gear ratio like the original or even 3.15 woud probably be OK - WITHOUT ANY PLAY. Is it possible to find such one ? Rebuilding a differential would be way too expensive - 700 CAN$ - I understand.

radu197666 stick with the same ratio otherwise your cruise control will not work on a manual trans car. Some backlash is normal in the diff. This side to side play is not ok though! I wouldn't replace your diff just because of some gear backlash.

Thank you for the inputs. I wouldn't care too much about loosing the cruise control. I do 95% highway with my E39 as that's my weekend highway cruiser. I am more concerned about the fuel economy as the car will eat 7.5 or 8l/100km with a new 3.15 or 3.46 gear ratio diff and not 7l/100km as it's doing now -. however it will be much more peppy. The problem is that the backlash is pissing me off and will be there for all the time. I daily drive a TOYOTA YARIS manual as well , shifting is smooth and no strange noises with the car having 170k on it. When driving 2005-2007 ACCORD i4 or V6 or ACURA TSX shifting was also smooth with no differential clunking at all. I understand that those lighter FWD cars are different. I have chased for 2-3 years a low mileage good condition 528i or 530i - manual - and after I got this one I feel confused and frustrated. Engine sound good, fuel economy is great, no leaking at all, no oil consumption but shifting is frustrating with that clunking. You have to release the clutch really really smooth and rev it more in order not too have that clunk. I like the clutch - soft, self-adjustable clutch - I wish though the depressing to be smoother and not too sudden . I still think I will change the differential but it's risky : a manual 525i or 530i with 2.93 or 3.15 are most tempting but how can I be sure they will be better - basically perfect - than mine ? The auto 525i and 530i have 3.46 gear ratio ... can trust a diff on an auto car much more but gear ratio is a bit too high for my tastes !

HuSaM H. I had the manufacturer send me a new unit, the cutoff shield was not moving into place perfectly every time.

All I learned from this video is Trident gum, Hyundai pushing peoples buttons, bring your own phone for unlimited data, when feeling bad go to walgreens.
