Great review. I loved the book; I thought it was hilarious. But you are 100% right, it is not for some people. It’s not that they wouldn’t understand, but a reader deserves the choice to live with or without going into that hell. The boredom, the coldness, the sharp hallucination. Very funny Not a super evil book, but I tote understand if someone would rather not eat that shit sandwich

Also when he was doing the research for the book, he came across that study that was done & It showed that most of the people that work on wall street, have psychopathic tendencies... to have a job like that, to take money from people and not feel any guilt or remorse or any motion at all played a major part of Bateman working on Wallstreet. Very interesting no?

I'm about 80% thru and I made it by just skipping both torture scenes and Pat discussing music. In some ways the book is pretty funny, and I wish an adaptation would show more of their inability to tell each other apart, that's SO central to the book; they can recognize brands but not faces. It also feels very intentional the way the book has no plot progression, previous chapters don't relate to the current one, people can disappear and it doesn't matter, actions have no consequences. But he just tortured two escorts to death and it was COMPLETELY redundant. It does feel to some extent like gruesome detailed descriptions of sexually torturing women with just enough padding you can publish it and say, it's satire, I wrote it and people read it for the greater *message* that it fits into in *context*. Yeah buddy. Sure. I wouldn't go anywhere alone with Bret Easton Ellis.
@dorothyv64282 ай бұрын
> he just tortured two escorts to death and it was COMPLETELY redundant This is described in pages of detail at least 3 times. Like, I got it the first time around. The book drags on and ON, and while I do think that's sort of intentional and symbolic, it's lousy to READ. > I wouldn't go anywhere alone with Bret Easton Ellis. One thing that softens my attitude a little bit is I believe he was a teen in LA around the time of serial killings like the Manson murders. Still wouldn't hang out, but I have that little piece of me that asks myself how that atmosphere and fear could have affected someone young. I've met a handful of women who were assaulted and consume a lot of slashers/horror and it's somehow therapeutic.

Why skip the torture scenes? If you are might as well be reading a kids book.

You'll probably get a better understanding of Ellis, and the world he comes from, from _The Shards_ (this is very long but works exceptionally well as an audiobook, as it's also narrated by the Author himself). Give it a go.

Graham you are not alone. I stumbled upon this book by watching the same Audi commercial . The first time I thought okay that's interesting. Then I saw it again thinking okay I need to buy this book. Once that decision was made I have never seen that commercia again. Bought the hard cover, loved it, and have been listening and reading books by Ryan Holiday who has done extensive work on Stoicism. In fact I bought his book Daily Meditations which gives you a meditation for every day of the year. Love it!!!!! I told a friend of mine about Stoicism because she was reading about it, then told her about the car commercial......how fortuitous!! You never know how spirit will speak or lead. Thanks Graham...

I've read (well, listened to) all of Sanderson's books and imo Sanderlanche is not about twists. It's about the culmination of all the foreshadowings coming together in the finale. Yes, if you pay close attention and are good with theorycrafting, all of it will be super obvious, but from what I've seen of Sanderson's interviews and videos - that's exactly what he wants. He wants the reader to pay attention and then pay off on that attention.
