It’s very obvious what went wrong. Square Enix views ff7 as its biggest cash cow, and they saw an opportunity to get fans to buy it 3 times instead of 2. That’s why we didn’t just get a faithful remake, it would’ve only been 2 games. So that means pad pad pad pad, and the story stuff is just pure fan fiction. Why is Zack here? Why are we fighting Sephiroth 8 times? Why is Aerith in combat after dying? Why a multiverse? It’s bc this needs to be 3 games, and it spits on the story. They took a story about loss and self-acceptance, and made it a marvel movie. Awful.

Rebirth was just a big mini game. They really got old after awhile. Especially when some are forced. I went back to playing the remake Intergrade. Has a more darker feeling, better visuals and lighting and more fun

They do explain why Ellen calls out to someone for comfort. This scene was shortly after her mother passed away, I can't remember which scene this was stated but i think it was the scene where Ellen admits to Thomas that she reached out to Orlok when she was a child

The problem with changing a narrative means you have the original and the new convoluted narrative working alongside each other. It’s so freaking messy, clunky and with a multiverse trope that’s five years too late. It’s so hard within that narrative with all its flaws to care or understand. I found myself so indifferent to all of it and unable to feel the story come through. Ff7 has been a total let down and they dropped the ball so hard for no real reason.

Great review and as a lover of mostly arthouse and world cinema I think your review was just as well thought out as any other I have read especially for reaching outside your own preferred wheelhouse. Since you like The Beast so much you might want to give Trenque Lauquen, Only the River Flows and Eureka (2023) a try. Not sure you will like them but they all share beguiling and enigmatic qualities that I liked in this.

If that was all Cloud being an unreliable narrator, I worry for the story. Cloud has never been that crazy. Sephiroth manipulated a single inconsistency in Cloud's story, but Cloud never truly made stuff up. This would be poor writing, if not nuanced. Personally I think people are just hoping the multiverse in minimised, hence going for this simple solution.

The future of the Beast is up there with Her, Ex Machina, Matrix and even I have no mouth therefore I must Scream as the scariest depictions of Artificial Intelligence I have seen in fiction. The subtlety and absolute domination of human perception that it is capable of. At least in terminator we could shoot the robot overlords if we wish.

This is a film that lingers long after you watch it. Not just in piecing together the narrative, but in putting into context the details in the story based on the reveals at the end. Equal parts romantic, tragic, horrifying and dystopian.

I somewhat disagree with your definitions and examples of video game remakes and remasters. You used the Crash Bandicoot N'Sane Trilogy as an example of a "remaster", but most people (me included) would classify it as a Remake, because they reMADE everything from scratch, on an entirely new engine. A remaster is just upgrading the old game, where as this one was built from the ground up to resemble the original.

I've always prefered game designers to use dashes instead of dodge rolls. Dodge rolls look really silly, and aren't something you'd use in the real world to avoid taking damage. I've studied karate and hema sword fighting. Footwork is absolutely fundamental to those martial arts to avoiding getting hit, as well as for controling your positioning in a fight. Virtually never is the right course of action to jump into a roll to avoid getting hit. You want to stay on your feet, always. The only real thing rolls are good for is to avoid getting hurt when you know you're going to fall. In Judo they practice rolling a lot, as it's a grappling and throwing martial art. For parrying, after playing and falling in love with Sekiro, I was really disappointed when Fromsoft went straight back to treating parries the same way for Elden Ring as they did for Dark Souls 1-3. Again, in hand-to-hand and melee martial arts, parrying is such a fundamental aspect of learning to fight. You use it constantly. But in Elden Ring and DS, Fromsoft likes to treat it as some special technique exploit that's difficult to pull off, and rewards you with a critical hit. I don't find it very fun or rewarding. What they did with Sekiro was so, so much better, and they put so much work into making that combat as refined and fun as possible. You can parry almost everything in Sekiro, and getting good at parrying in that game feels amazing.

I arrived at a similar opinion after failing to finish my first run of Elden Ring after 110 hours. I do not think ER is a bad game of course, far far from it, but the rolling was one of a handful of things that wore me down over that lengthy playthrough. I'm a longtime Fromsoft fan, Bloodborne and Sekiro are my top 2 favourite games. But I think that right there shows where my priorities are. I've played the whole Dark Souls trilogy too, but after a while in Elden Ring I started to just feel more and more how it was very goofy to have a guy in full armor constantly rolling. Elden Ring makes you dodge a LOT, moreso than any other From game it feels like, and that started to make fights feel less engaging for me. I really hope From stops relying on the roll now, and prioritises incorporating more combat elements that were present in Bloodborne and Sekiro. Not just dashing, but more aggressive parrying and countering mechanics also. I think combat is so much better when you have many ways in which to respond to enemy attacks, not just roll away or inefficient blocking.

Dodge rolls are great in the souls games imo but not every game should implement them, I feel like they fit well with especially the vibe of the souls games. You wouldn't really get the feeling of the overwhelming struggle of fighting these enemies if you were just waiting for them to attack you

Riders controls well, the only problem was they should’ve had a proper tutorial for new players like zero gravity did instead of putting it into the options menu

Sonic Riders is not a 'kart racer' it is part of the 'arcade racer' genre just like Mario Kart is, but its not a kart racer, its an extreme boarding racer (skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, etc.) the initial pitch of the game was even made by a studio that did skate boarding games (they had the assets at the time because they helped animate Sonic Heroes) how dare you slander the greatness of Sonic Riders with that 'kart racer' stuff, (Sonic's kart racer is the ones with the cars) know your racing genres (yes I know the 'extreme boarding' one is a bit niche is usage, but you know them when you see them) Mario Kart and Sonic Riders are related thru the arcade racer genre, not the kart racer genre, shame on you. well that's my pet peeve taken care of, enjoy the engagement boost, happy to see we share some feelings, like the Shadow the Hedgehog game being great, idea wise, but gameplay wise being frustrating, like it is so cool, but as always playing it is some kind of frustrating feet of why are you doing that to yourself? great idea, bad experience, but as Sonic game we're used to that and its not that bad, if you can handle Heroes, its fine

Sonic will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart, I genuinely don't know where'd I'd be without it and this was a nice way to look back at it all and keep my hopeful optimism for where it's heading. My first game was SA2Battle. Love Sonic and Shadow but crushed on Shadow more, the story I loved the most and always came back for the chao garden aspect. Wish it would come back tbh

I'm sorry, I think you have put a lot of effort into this video, but I'm having trouble understanding what is it actually about and why have you made it? It's neither a succinct overview or a detailed analysis on the series, nor does it provide an interesting new perspective. I don't think you should have structured the video to be about each mainline game individually, if you haven't played over half of them and can only regurgitate what others have said about them. The first half of the video is actually somewhat interesting, as you talk about your own personal experience with the series and what preferences you have for it, but even then you constantly undermine them by trying to also stay as "objective" as possible. This issue is most prevalent in your section about Shadow 05, in which you state that you "unironically love" the game and enjoy playing it, yet also mention that it's bad in the same breath. It's two conflicting statements fighting over one another, you do a poor job of elaborating upon. The moment you start talking about the 2010s games, the video takes a massive nosedive. You just start regurgitating most common sonic opinions in the most bland way possible. It becomes tiresome to hear "sonic fans disliked that" or "sonic fans liked that" after every other sentence. "There isn't very much to say about [Sonic Forces]" Yeah, of course, there's not much to say when you haven't played the game for yourself and are only repeating popular talking points. It just makes me question why did you bother talking about these games at all when I can look up, here on KZbin, opinions on them from people who have actually played them. The video should've either been fully about your own personal history with the series and the impact it had on you as a person - or - you should've fully leaned into the angle of comparing Sonic to Mario and make the video be about the internal management and history of Sega and Nintendo, and how these factors influenced their respective mascot series.
