I think one of the key things for an adaptation to work is that the characters have to have the same vibe/feel as the original. Even if they have new stories or the stories diverge from the original, if the characters have the same vibe/feel, or are even fleshed out more then it still works. Like I agree that they did a good job with Zuko’s characterisation such that even the differences in some of the events that occurred he still felt like Zuko and was enjoyable/worth watching. So many of the other characters just felt so flat. I think the girls Katara and Suki got it the worse and were so flat they didn’t feel like their original characters at all.

I agree with a lot from this video, but i disagree that the netflix adaptation is a thematically darker and more mature take on the original. It consistently misses the mark when dealing with the big issues of belonging, loss, and purpose - unlike the original, which is exactly what made it so compelling.

I should have been more specific - it "feels" like the show wants to be darker by focusing more on war and showing more violence, but you're right. It fails at actually "being" more mature when it comes to how it approaches the adult themes

It's not bad, but I have a problem with a lot of the awkward acting, and how they literally sucked all the personality out of katara's character. Also what you said about the visuals and cgi perfectly explains why something felt so off when I watching, the whole show feels very dull and gloomy compared to the original and in a way that makes it forgettable and more boring tbh.

@@doomcotti yeah i get that, and that's literally my problem with the show 😭 if you and others like this more serious version then cool! this is only my opinion. they can still make it less gloomy even if it's live action, by making the visuals brighter in some scenes and giving the characters actual defining personality traits like in the original, it kinda feels like they sucked the life out of the main 3. also why not let the children goof off and act like children? especially when u consider the fact that aang in the remake is always talking about how he's "just a kid who wants to goof off with his friends" but then proceeds to do none of that during the show. again, just my opinion, you can disagree.

I just don’t get people saying ‘it’s not bad’ and list like all my dealbreakers. 🥲 I can agree that the young cast are very sweet and charismatic and I can tell that people that love the atla universe were involved in the set, prop and costume department, but besides that…uh…. I guess you mean ‘it’s not bad, but it’s not good’ a middle of the road type of deal. Writing is God. Good Writing can be forgiving for awkward kid acting and the dialogue was NOT lending itself to these young actors. Either the reads were very dry, underwhelming or repeating the same exposition, if we were lucky they’d chew the scenery. I have no patience for elements that break immersion or try to have the message precede the story. So…basically chronological plot beats, diarrhea of the exposition mouth, mischaracterization and pacing are my sins in media. Anything that spoils presence, natural reveals, kills natural dialogue, mystery and just…having an entertaining experience makes me wonder how they managed to do all the faux pas’ of writing. I also wonder why I’m even trying to make myself like it. I’ll give flowers to some of the actors and some isolated scenes that did visually look good, but yeah…

I think we got Avatar Studios earlier because of this. I’m happy Paramount realized they have a legitimate banger here, and I hope they prosper. I feel it was inevitable that they eventually got the studio I just hope that this sub par version brings even 1 new fan to the original.

It's just bad. Bad casting, bad acting and delivery of lines, not funny. It's interesting to watch, and criticize in a group binge session with friends. That is all it has to offer, a different perspective of the shows story and plot, a bad perspective, which we get to criticize and laugh at.

The way you present a story matters way more than the summary of the events, which is why the writing in the live action doesn't even begin to come close to the one in the original. Also the changes to the characters alone, especially Katara, make the changes more radical than the minor 5% you're saying.

Episode 1 was the worst episode, which is a shame. I never watched One Piece, but one interesting difference I noticed was how the different Netflix teams talked about the original shows. Netflix One Piece showrunners seemed very proud and respectful of the original, whereas Netflix Avatar showrunners came across like they were almost embarrassed of the original's depiction of sexism and other themes

The live action version of one the most popular series ever made went nr. 1 in popularity in its first season, which has to be watched in order to judge if this adaptation is good? Yeah, that's how it works. It has nothing to do with its actual quality or lack thereof. Companies make remakes after insanely popular media because it's assured it will bring in cash thanks to nostalgia alone, that's all. If you like it, good for you, but your arguments for why people shouldn't "hate" on it are absolute nonsense. Also popularity doesn't equal quality, also there's plenty of shows with few episodes a season that don't feel rushed because their writers are very good at what they're doing, but okay.

You don't understand what people want because you're not really listening. Either do a very faithful adaptation or make it different enough to stand on its own, this live action is in the uncanny valley between the two. That much is stated clearly in this video.

People need to stop telling us not to compare these copies to the original. If you want something to be judged on it’s own merits, then make an original show. I wanted it to be vary different. Send the characters down a different path. Like: What if Zuko wasn’t sent to get the Avatar, but just sent to the earth kingdom, and left alone? Instead they chose to follow closely to the original but throw in random changes here and there, but without moving the story into a different direction, it just keeps going the same way but now it doesn’t make as much sense.
