Thanks for the random recommendation, KZbin. I wonder if the live birth is meant to look like a casual fish poop on purpose. Like if a predator fish was watching and though oh, she just pooped, that might be enough of a distraction for them to leave the babies alone for a couple minutes while they gain strength to swim on their own.
