He's five foot-two and he's six feet-four He fights with missiles and with spears He's all of thirty-one and he's only seventeen He's been a soldier for a thousand years He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew And he knows he shouldn't kill And he knows he always will Kill you for me, my friend, and me for you And he's fighting for Canada He's fighting for France He's fighting for the USA And he's fighting for the Russians And he's fighting for Japan And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way And he's fighting for Democracy He's fighting for the Reds He says it's for the peace of all He's the one who must decide Who's to live and who's to die And he never sees the writing on the wall But without him How would Hitler have condemned them at Labau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone He's the one who gives his body as a weapon of the war And without him all this killing can't go on He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame His orders come from far away no more They come from here and there and you and me And brothers, can't you see? This is not the way we put the end to war

I remember hearing this for the first time when I was very young and didn’t know what it meant at all haha. All I know is that I thought it was beautifully well done as I do now.

In the 70s and 80s it was rumoured that Keith Moon played drums on this. He was in a different BEACHCOMBERS band. Then there is the ongoing debat if Jimmy Page played on it. Member or members state otherwise. I own the single and appearance on a compilation. It Rocks!!!

These kids today will never understand, what it was like to be 17 in high school and know that in just a few weeks you'd be going off to Vietnam and possibly never coming home alive. And you had absolutely no say in it. if that wasn't enough to scare you well... one day you are a kid the next day you're a man.

Donovan was great. His Universal Soldier (written by Buffy St Marie), one of the protest songs of the 60s is, in many ways, as relevant today as it was back then. He will always have a place in my heart.

Humans will never learn. There are always greedy and belligerent leaders somewhere who are willing to send young men to fight.

I am 75 and I am watching the look of awe in the faces. It is as if those words have never been heard and are scary in virtue of the self indictment. Yes we are not a well people. But thank God for Donovan.

superb. the great tragedy of humankind is that the only Peace we've ever known on a large scale came from warring one against the other. humankind has 'evolved' to invent more ways to kill our own people. be kind to your self and let that Flow. beats not bombs. monk

Yeah man, I'm the sjaman... Wie in dát nummer de 'hurdy gurdy man' niet herkend begrijpt de ziel van deze man niet. Niks 'idealisme' meer, juist handelen én 'weten', dat is meer dan voldoende.

I see a lot of people here who know this song in a way most will never know. Just know, I was shown this song while working for a friend that fought in Vietnam at 18-19, and the way he described how impactful this song is will stay with me for life.
