Donovan was great. His Universal Soldier (written by Buffy St Marie), one of the protest songs of the 60s is, in many ways, as relevant today as it was back then. He will always have a place in my heart.

On this day in 1965 {August 11th} Donovan performed "Colours" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'... At the time the song was in its first week, at #95, on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; five weeks later on September 12th it peaked at #61 {for 1 week} and the following and last week on the chart it was at #88... Between 1965 and 1973 he had seventeen Top 100 records; four made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Sunshine Superman" for one week on August 28th, 1966... He just missed having a second #1 record when "Mellow Yellow" peaked at #2* {for 3 weeks} on December 4th, 1966... * The first week "Mellow Yellow" was at #2, the #1 for that week was "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys; and for the 2nd and 3rd week at #2, "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band was in the top spot... R.I.P. Jimmy O'Neill {Shindig's host, 1940 - 2013}...

I really love this guy and his Colours. It has driven me half crazy to see the last stanza of his song wrongly written SO MANY TIMES, as "when I've been loved", instead of "when I've been low." Go ahead and google his lyrics to this song and you'll see what I mean. Correct them if you can. Thanks Donovan for all the memories.

Some of those who were around in those days said that Donovan was not copying Dylan. Both were actually performing in the style of Woody Guthrie. He was the originator of this style of folk music.

I enjoy Donovan as much as anybody, but just watch the rendevous between Dylan and Donovan in DON'T LOOK BACK and you'll see the diffference between talent and genius.
@saskiakneulman72754 жыл бұрын
As Donovan sang that song, in "Don't look back" (great documentary!), so modest, with his gentle, sad eyes, it was very touching. I'd say Bob Dylan was also moved by this friendly soul, behind his dark glasses. He hadn't have to mock him the way he did, being a genius, as he was/is.

Music isn't getting worse, it's just changing. Music is an art, and as an art it's a reflection of the times, issues, and society that it's made in. If you look for music on the radio and tv than you're looking in the wrong place, these days music is being used by big companies for profit, those two mediums are full of garbage that's made to make money because they're regulated by big labels. But if you dig for good music you'll find that music is thriving right now

Society is now cr@p and so is the music.

@superblather Donovan had his own sound and unique vision. He wasn't trying to be Dylan or Guthrie although he may have been influenced by them (and many other musicians were). Not for nothing but most of our some what modern and modern blues music for example has been covered time nad time again by all walks of life. It is a bit hard to find original popular music. Not to mention, artists will at most times cover music that inspired them. I play guitar and nothing feels better than playing and singing a favorite tune. I recently saw America at Carnagie Hall and they covered a Beatles song, it was awesome to hear one of your favorite bands do a cover.

Music is about experiences. Music is about express yourself. It's not a sport, so don't compare. There are good songwritters such as Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and so on. Each one live their life they way they want. If they want to change their way of express themselves Who are we to criticize them?

If you listen to Dylan's first album, he sang mostly traditional folk songs written by other people. Donovan did the same thing on Fairytale. I would say Dylan and Donovan were influenced by the same people. I don't think they were influenced by each other.

The only people who would try to compare Dylan and Donovan are those who don't know either one's music well and find it simply convenient to throw around labels and cheap comparisons Both became famous in the mid 60's playing accoustic guitar, and folk music. But Dylan was a master of lyrics and lyrical phrasing who used folk as a medium. Donovan emphasized melody and ethereal lyrics: colors flowers etc- DL was a flower child BD a vagabond singing about politics, religion, love gone bad.
@Hippeeeee16 жыл бұрын
i love listening to this song i wouldn't compare his music to Dylan's though-only that they both write beautiful music it has to be his look that makes some think he's 'copying' but Dylan didn't invent the mouth organ : )
