Yeah VW messed up design on these. Definitely not made to be removed.

Not my ride I just filmed my coworker that couldn’t help himself every time he drove it.

They are almost just as hard to get fully snapped back in because the metal plate bolted to the roof wants to move as you press them back in. Very frustrating design. After 17 years of doing bodywork I have had enough of over engineered stuff and retired from body work and now work for myself.

When placing the grab handle back into the roof rail make sure the metal spring clip is centred exactly in the middle. Like the diagram at the start of this dudes video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnjPko2kpdN2aJo. Both the “upper”and “lower”wings of the metal spring clip have to be fully engaged otherwise the grab handle will be wobbling when you pull down on it. You won’t be able to get the final plastic cover tabs fully seated either. So insert the grab handle into the roof the best you can, get a good flashlight and pick tool and use them to push and centre the metal spring clip. Hope this helps. Being somewhat flexible doesn’t hurt either.

That's what I ran into as well.

Scrubasaursrex it could be different. It will be the same concept though. Back the screw out and it should move a slide mechanism. Just be sure not to back the screw out too far and drop it in the door. Some have stoppers to prevent that some don’t.

I unscrewed it for what seemed like 5 minutes straight. No change. I think it has black stopper. Still can't pull the handle off

It is odd...I tried loosening the screw for a while and tried tightening the screw for a bit. Neither made a change. I feel like I should remove the door panel. And that just seems like too big of a hassle.

This is our Journey , I didn't have anyone to film while I winched it out. I laid the hi lift frame from the windshield frame to the back of the cab put a d ring through the hi lift and and used my winch on my Jeep to raise and lower once it was all unbolted. Pretty simple setup I have pictures somewhere if you want to PM an email address.
