I’m upgrading from a self converted T5.1 to a GC680 4motion. I spent 2 hours with a GC600 today locally before heading 250 miles to check out a used 680. I found the catches tricky but it took me under 2 seconds to work out how to operate them reliably. They could be much better. I agree the kitchen space is odd but you didn’t mention the top cage drawer or the wee freezer. I have a 65L vitrofrigo compressor fridge that will potentially live under the bed. I found the 600 to be oppressively claustrophobic but the 680 looks really open and airy in comparison. On the basis that everything is a compromise, I need a long distance wild camp tourer, and a car show tow and live Motorhome. Top of the list is an inside loo and inside kitchen and as a good used van the value for money is excellent. I’m a solo traveller, and travel very light (former biker) so I doubt I’ll fill even half the space. Campervan Tetris; it’s a thing. Enjoyed the review and especially relieved at the mpg. I get 48mpg from my T5.1 if I try and anything above 30 for the GC is Good News

Hi there, Thanks for your comment, sounds like you have got yourself a great van ! I have heard from several people that the GC680 is better resolved than the 600, seems strange, but there we go! Unfortunately, the 680 is just too big for us, we have nowhere to keep it at home and we need the ability to sleep up to 4 people inside the van. We have opted for something different this time, but only because the GC600 was too much of a compromise for our needs. Maybe we'll go back to VW in the future. Thanks again for watching and enjoy your new van ! cheers JT

Hi ! Thanks for your message. That's a really tricky one as all the ones we have visited have been very nice, which is why we keep going back. If you are looking for plenty to do in the near locality and tourist places to visit its hard to beat Sarlat or Saumur. If you want something more remote with beautiful local scenery, La Plage Blanc or Aiguebelette would be a good choice. Both of them are more remote, but are in lovely locations. They have recently added some more sites to their portfolio, so we have plenty more to visit... thanks for watching, remember t subscribe for more campsire reviews as we visit more locations. Hi JT All the best with Campervan Journey part 2. I know you said it’s taken 2 years to find a replacement for the Cali, but your next van seems like a big step up and had to be right ( or near as possible). When there isn’t anything out there that fits the bill exactly it doesn’t make the commitment any easier. I find myself in a similar position to you, I have a VW Cali Coast that I went away in with my daughter. She’s flown the nest now and I wonder if the Coast is abit over the top for one person. It’s great, I’m self contained, but I wonder if I should do something abit simpler based around one person ( 2 occasionally), using the van. Enjoyed your video’s, especially the product reviews, clear and concise. Look forward to seeing more in the future. Best regards Dion

First of all, congratulations! Choosing a replacement for a California is not an easy task, even in our experience. We understand your arguments and also ended up with the Campus edition of the Free S 600. But even on this model not all options were available: heated front seats and a soft close for the sliding door, as on the California Ocean, could not be ordered. But you won't hear us complaining, there are plenty of other things we enjoy to the full. One disappointment is that the state of the domestic battery cannot be displayed as a percentage, which is annoying. An optional shunt battery monitor solved this. By the way, a second battery is not a luxury. Best regards from Belgium!

Thank you, we got there in the end ! It has certainly been a Campervan Journey ! I have been following your posts and it's good to see you are settling in well with your new Hymer. We have managed to find a van with Heated Seats which was key for us, and 95% of the other options we wanted. Right place, right time I guess. We are having a solar panel fitted which via its system has an Phone App that will, I believe, detail the state of our batteries. I am going to have to spend the summer learning how it all works ...! Congrats. We just picke dup a Grand Cali 600, having found the incentive to upgrade and stick with VW far stronger than looking to move to other brands. The Svens do nothing for us unfortunately, and the Hymer we struggled with, especially with a pop top (tired of the 'tent' element of them), and the sudden stop/start of the cab and living area decor/theme. Hi I appreciate you may have made your mind up on the choice of a van. However, we looked at similar vans and found that some had an annual habitation charge, if you wanted the warranty to be valid and that pretty much with a basic service was around a £900 and that’s for 10years at current prices. Hopefully that does not apply to you, but just giving you a heads up.

Congratulations on your choice and the colour of the vehicle is so pleasing when you see it in the metal. I would have added the Knaus Boxdrive 600 XL to your list. You can even get 4x4 version right hand drive. It resolves every design deficiency in the GC within the same shell. Rear seats separate and tilt for travel. Slide out bed takes two. It’s insulated. It has a proper kitchenette . Etc etc. .

Great video JT, will you get it in time for your summer hols. Agree German engineering is better than Italian, best going with a Mercedes or VW/Man chassis. I really like the Sven, which would work for us as only 2, however that will be a retirement purchase when I have more time to travel, at the moment the Cali still ticks the boxes for me, as works great asa daily drive. I agree. On paper they look indistinguishable. However, I’ve spent all afternoon at a dealer comparing a Columbus 601 alongside a SH. There is no doubt they are very different viewed in the metal. Rear end of the Man/ VW is much narrower than the Ducato. Side walls also not as box like. Everything in the Columbus 601 is bigger bar the bathroom - kitchen units wider, overhead lockers bigger and rear bed is bigger without having to deploy the uninsulated pop out on a SH. No one should think that the lockers over the bed in SH will hold much at all. They are tiny in comparative terms. All carefully sized to retain feeling of openness in a smaller space. If I could get my head around paying so much for the Fiat base vehicle I’d have a Columbus 601 over a SH if yiu are interested in more camper facility within a 6 metre van
@CampervanJourney
@CampervanJourney 18 күн бұрын

Hi Martin, The Hymer drives very well in comparison to the VW. As a 6m Van it was comparable in its manoeuvrability to the Grand California 600. Whilst we liked the Adria Twin, my preference was for VW/MAN/Mercedes as a base van over Fiat/Peugeot/Citroen for the driving refinement and availability of additional options especially things like full LED headlights and adaptive cruise control. Do not apologize about weather in UK , we have same disaster half north France ! it's funny because i have same project for our Family of three . We love our COAST T6.1 but having a little bit more space and bath in only 6 meters is mid term goal . This HYMER is definitively in our short list and i'm afraid that new Cali T7 from VW is moving away from real life on pitch .. i have no driving experience at the moment but feedback from France is very positive about this HYMER . Just regret about old shower curtain , i prefer swivel wall solution we can find in ADRIA for instance . i'm also follower of belgian travellers Freeontour ( ex Cali T6 owners ) and they recently moved to this magnificent vehicle . Have nice summer vacations

Hi Ben, sorry to hear the weather in your part of France is pretty rubbish too ! We watched Le Mans and the weather there was awful as well for much of the race... Good to hear the positive feedback about the Hymer. The shower curtain is a compromise, but we wouldn't use the shower if on a campsite. The swivel wall concept is good, but have found that vans with it have other compromises that don't work for us. I have checked out Freeontour and it's good to see that they are enjoying their switch to the Hymer. We are looking forward to the summer, hopefully in a new van....watch this space ! Cheers JT

Thanks for the review. I've kept an open mind and this afternoon been to test drive a 600 with your review in mind. It's a sweetie to drive. That is not where the van struggles at all. It is the interior fittings. I can only echo the several major problems in the design and layout of this van that you have itemised.. It is a colossal disappointment. The wall mounted cabinets are abysmal. In principle, splitting the cabinets to upper/lower should help with organisation but every one of the upper cabinets has a 2/3 inch beam running through it. The beam is two inches on its top side , three inches on its lower side and ruins every one of the lockers. The beam means that items are necessarily pushed forwards and renders all of them substandard. It is easy to see why a net is placed in the rear locker. The reality is that every locker needs some restraining device. The catches are pitiful and temperamental from the outset. The kitchen is a dud for the size of van. There are just two little cuboid drawers which will not fit big pans or much at all. The fridge system takes up a disproportionate amount of the kitchen block for the volume of cold storage on offer. The lower slide out section has low walls and I can easily envisage items getting thrown backward into the rear of the fridge void when in the mountains. The reality , sadly, is that the kitchenette in my T6 California is not only easier to use but has more storage space than this disappointing version. The whole kitchenette unit jibbered noisily throughout the test drive even on the smoothest bits of tarmac. The only reason to buy and compromise is that there is a demo fleet out there with nearly no miles on the odometer being sold at 66-72k via the VW dealers and, tragically, in the current market that is starting to look 'reasonable'.
@CampervanJourney

Glad you got to test drive the GC600, but sorry to hear you came away wit the same misgivings as we did. I really struggled with how poorly the interior seemed to be designed in some areas. It was a real surprise and disappointment, especially as we wanted to like it. I was hoping that the update coming soon was going to address some of these issues, but it does not look like that will be the case. I'd love to be proved wrong ! Thanks again for taking the time to share your detailed thoughts. JT

Well, have you decided on the Free ? How are the driving dynamics compared to a 6m Vw/Man based vehicle such as the GC or the Sven Hedin or the Adria equivalent ? I remain unconvinced by any rear seat in any motorhome or Hymer conversion bar the Westfalia rear seats. The 3 person bench they used to put in a Nugget and then in the James Cook in the early 200s is still hard to beat. It had an angled bed rest and arm rests - really neither difficult nor expensive. The patented seat in the modern Columbus seems to be as good as it gets. It is still nowhere near its precursor - the same seat in the 2008-14 edition of the James Cook - it was wider, softer and also had arm rests upon it. The rear seat in this Hymer looks no different to the bolt-upright cushions-on-cheap-bench formula that Hymer seem always to deploy. It's the main reason why I am not now heading south to have a drive of a Free 600. My kids are grown but I cannot think of a single mountain biking friend who would want to travel any significant distance in a rear seat like this or 90% of what is out there. It is just so dismal that none of them, save Westfalia, put any effort into rear seat ergonomics. Why is it so very difficult for them to do something as simple as Westfalia's sliding bar to put a 15-20 degree rake on the back rest and extend the seat area when in transit ?

Hi There, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed response, which absolutely his the nail on the head with regards the travelling setas. Over the past two years we have been looking for a replacement van ONLY the Westfalia has had seats that we thought were top notch. Why all the other makers don't get this I don't know and I have raised it on many of my previous videos. It seems all the good vans have a compromise...it's just a case of finding a compromise you are prepared to live with. We were sold on the Westfalia Columbus for some time, but call it brand snobbery, I could not spend £95K on a Fiat Based van. Their passenger seats are by far the best we have found and the clever converting seat bed option was a big drawer as well. On more than one occasion I spoke to representatives from Westfalia Germany to ask when the same set up was coming in the Sven Hedin, only to be told it won't due to the Crafter/Man chassis being too narrow to accommodate it. I think Westfalia have missed a trick here as it could provide the logical step up from many VW California owners who don't want or like the Grand California. I also don't get why Westfalia don't offer the Sven as a 4 berth with a poptop, again, trick missed I feel. The Hymer travelling seat is not ideal, but despite appearances it is better than the Grand California surprisingly. It is wider, deeper and although it does not recline the cushion design does give an element of slope. The GC travelling seat is fixed, almost vertical and narrow, suitable for 1 adult and a child really. Poss two children, but would be no good if they were in child seats. Having been used to the equipment we have had on our California; LED lights, adaptive cruise control, comfy seating and sleeping for 3 / 4 people, good driving experience (the Hymer drove well on test drive) , auto gearbox, good infotainment as standard and good build quality, the options available rapidly diminish. Having had a converted T5 prior to the Cali, I didn't really want to go down the self build route again, so we were left with a relatively short shortlist. The Hymer, A GC600 (but I would want to see the new upgraded one before committing) or a Westfalia Columbus. There have been lots of other nearly made it to the shortlist options that we have dismissed because they are not as good as they first appeared and we could keep looking for the perfect van forever....! So in answer to your question, the Hymer seems to have ticked more boxes than many AND we won't have to wait months for it... Thanks for taking the time to get in touch, cheers JT

2 things I have learnt from moving to larger van which was not aware of... Check your payloads. Especially for vans with 4 seats, poptop....factor in your water tank weight. Then all your kit. You will be surprised how close or over 3.5T you will get Consider your battery system. A lot of these vans don't really talk about batteries and electrics. But if using not on hookup, a good system is crucial and not just AGM. If on hookup much less an issue

We would definitely look for upgraded batteries and ideally solar as well.

Looking forward to the other 2 contenders! We got a MAN TGE3 with factory poptop and then got it converted. Arrived back in March. A game changer on the campaign front and we now do winters, get up and go etc so much more easily. It's a bigger van, but only really noticeable that when parking and cornering (it leans more cornering that our Beach) on country roads. But as long as using it for campaign and trips it's a game changer

That’s an option we didn’t consider but sounds great. Good to hear that the move to a bigger van seems to have made getting away easier and more comfortable for you, which is exactly what we are hoping for … 🤞

Worth trying the new Swift Trekker X, based on a Ford Transit platform

We did have the trekker on the shortlist and managed to see one a few weeks back. We found the bed on the Trekker really narrow, and the trekker x felt like it had a really narrow galley. Great case of looked great on paper but in reality was not quite right for us…

Looks like the van you looked at has sold, is it possibly you? They still have some in blue.. I have a T6.1 and looking to change to a 6 m van next year, don’t want a Fiat… so this looks like a good option
