Congrats on your machine! Try pushing your fingernail into the platen rubber. If it gives at all, the rubber is likely in good condition and you should be able to enjoy typing on it. If it’s hard as a rock, it’s time to replace it. Once you do, you’ll notice the difference, believe me. If a platen is properly reconditioned it should wind up lasting many many years. Happy typing!

The shadow self is something I have eyeing for quite sometime now. I mostly do a lot of drawing and painting. However, my creative spark tends to come and go at random. I noticed that I will only produce a few drawings/paintings and then it’s as if the creative energy just disappears. Then I am met with an overwhelming amount of fear, self doubt, negative thoughts, etc. When I get a new idea… The negative voice within me shuts it down, and I believe this voice. I’ve tried talking to some people close to me about it but I feel like a crazy person and nobody seems to understand. I’ve been into spirituality for several years and I meditate on and off. I’m hoping that if I stick to a routine I’ll be able to get some kind of insight on this whole thing. I’ve thought of the many times I’ve had people tell me that being an artist is hard. Or the one time my mom signed me up for an art class and for some reason I was placed in a room by myself while the other kids got to paint together. I wasn’t even a bad kid so it made absolutely no sense to me… That experience has always weighed heavily on me. My dad leaving also effected me as well since he was also an artist, and I always looked up to him. I remember one day he was packing his things and I wanted to show him what I was working on but he turned me away. One of the best memories I had was when I was in 5th grade. Somehow just by drawing and being creative I was able to spread this creative drive to others kids in my class. I even had one kid named Spencer come up to me and ask if I could put the robot he drew into a video game😂 I apologize for typing so much… I’ve just been feeling stuck for quite some time now. I’m hoping that by meditating daily and digging deeper into my shadow self that I will be able to overcome these “blocks” that I have.

Hi, @ReincarnatedAngels. We don't know each other so forgive me being so forward. But having read your account, my strong suspicion is that these things might help you. 1) Show up at your work every day no matter what. Even if you can only schedule 15 minutes. Even if you end up staring at the blank pad and doing nothing. The discipline of art conquers the more important creativity of art. The small mind opens the door to the big mind. Do this without fail and, if you have nothing to sketch about, sketch about what you're feeling in that moment when you have nothing to sketch about. 2) Confront this thing that happened with you in the past when you were put in a room by yourself. That person little person is still inside you and, I suspect, still confused about what's going on and perhaps hurt and resentful toward just making art. Figure this out. 3) Ditto the stuff with your dad. If he's alive, go talk to him. If he's no longer with us, speak to him in the more powerful arena of your imagination. But make your peace with him. I have no idea what his situation was but I strongly suspect that, if he was an artist as you say, at his best, he would want you to enjoy making art too. 4) Explore how much you enjoyed working with other people to spread your love of art. Perhaps this is the key to the lock of your current dilemma. The more you help others, the more you will likely help yourself since, in truth, all is one. 5) Realize that getting stuck is part of the game if you're an artist. Don't run from it. Embrace it. Enjoy it! The Shadow holds no power over us once we give it what it wants and realize that, ultimately, we are the Shadow. I hope this helps and I'm pulling for you. Now get to work.

Tucked under the paper table there's a long rubber-covered rod. What's it for? ... other than anchoring the paper table torsion spring, which could be attached directly to the paper table ... and why covered with rubber? The rubber is cracked and crumbly. Did you do anything with it in your restoration? Many thanks for the video and replies to our questions!

Just finished similar work on a new-to-me RRM1. I'm new to typewriters but have worked on clocks, treadle sewing machines, and racing bicycles, so that helps. Putting new rubber on feed rollers and paper fingers with auto vacuum tubing (judiciously sized) was super quick, easy, and cheap ($6) so I wouldn't send them out. I used a bike innertube to resurface the platen, and after putting in new ribbon, adjusting the letter height (it was off to start with) and the spool back-tension I get mostly good print quality. But the print isn't as bold as on my SC Silent or Olympia SM9. Is that just the machine with its different strike mechanism or can I adjust that? And the letters on the periphery, like q, a, s, z on the left and 1/2, ;, and / on the right, are fuzzy. Is that due to the greater strike angle these letters have? Or is there an adjustment to clear up those lateral keys? Thanks so much! BTW, I had a !*#! time getting my platen back in.

Success! I was able to slide a bike innertube over the platen of my own Remington Rand Model 1. I used a tube diameter a bit smaller than the platen and a length a bit longer, turned it inside out, then rolled it on to the platen so that the outside of the inner tube ends up on the outside of the platen. I failed the first try, but then I used soapy water between the two layers of the tube as I slipped it on, and Voila! I then sanded the little manufacturing ridges smooth with 400 sandpaper. I'll have to wait till I get the paper rollers out and redo them before I can report how the new platen surface works.
@dugldoo
@dugldoo 18 күн бұрын
The paper feed rollers and paper fingers have new rubber and the platen, resurfaced with a bike innertube, is back in. Everything works fine, but as people with more experience might have anticipated, the platen surface may be a tad soft. Before I make a final judgement and try heat-shrink rubber or JJShort, I'm going to adjust the letter heights, replace all the bumpers and dampers (up front under and over the key arms, and the felt under the backs of the letter slugs), and other tweaks that I learn about along the way. Thanks for all the great maintenance and repair videos!

Great demo. I have a couple antiques that won't get much use but could use this treatment. I wonder if you could judiciously choose the right sized thin bicycle inner tube, sand off the tiny manufacturing ridges, then stretch and pull it onto the old platen. I did a trial over a short wooden dowel about the diameter of a portable typewriter’s platen. I liked its look and feel but don’t have a way to measure its surface hardness. And maybe longevity would be an issue. If the platen is old and hard enough, it's probably shrunk enough that the added thickness would be helpful.

I'm delighted to find your video, just like I was delighted to get this machine from the estate of the original owner's daughter, born the same year the typewriter was made. It sat on the top shelf of her closet for the last 50 years unused. It's immaculate except for the inevitable aging of the rubber. The original instructions pamphlet is in the case along with cleaning brushes. The pamphlet describes changing the ribbon by winding an unspooled ribbon onto the built-in spools, as per these instructions: “Changing the ribbon of your Model 1 is a simple matter if you just follow directions. First depress Shift Lock, 3, Fig. 1. This raises Carrier Mechanism, 17, Fig. 1. Now remove both Spool Covers, 6, Fig. 1. Note position of ribbon on Carrier, 17,-behind Carrier and in front of Platen, 12, Fig. 1. Also note that on the Spools, the ribbon winds and unwinds from the side nearest you. Replace Left Spool Cover. Wind old ribbon onto Left Spool, using Ribbon Reverse, 5, Fig. 1 to free Spool if necessary. Remove end of Ribbon from slot in Right Spool Center. Then remove from Carrier Mechanism. Remove Left Spool Cover and lift old ribbon out of Left Spool. Put new ribbon on Left Spool Center. (Be sure winding side is toward you.) Insert free end of ribbon in vertical slot in Right Spool Center. Allow enough slack to permit running ribbon between Carrier and Platen and then "looping" over front vertical posts of Carrier as per illustration above. Replace Spool Covers, wind ribbon taut and you are ready to write.”

@TheWriteStuffPro-DamonDiMarco Ай бұрын
Hi @BenJam. Without seeing the specific model that you’re dealing with, I really can’t give you an answer. However, as a general rule, I have used any screw that I find on the furthest side of the carriage as an anchoring point for the draw band or string. In fact, in some cases, if I can’t do anything else, I will drill a small hole into that side of the undercarriage, and use a new screw to anchor the draw band that way. The bottom line is you have to make it work. The mechanics are simple. Just make sure that the line reaches as far to the end of the carriage as possible, is anchored securely, and that the line is tight so that the spring will pull the carriage back. I hope this helps. Please let me know if it does. And I wish you my best.

I had to make my own spool nuts for it to work. I think that is why no one bought it because it was not working without the spool nuts. I had some small plastic gears from another project & drilled the nut part to fit. Now it types beautifully. I've since seen other Cursive typewriters and I think the Olivetti Studio 44 has the prettiest Cursive font. Mine was made in Barcelona Spain. My first typewriter is certainly testing me. It meant taking the carriage out to get to that escapement wheel. Taking them apart and putting them back together seems to be typewriter equivalent of turning it off and on. Here's a little more on the issue I had, and apologies my terminology may not be 100%,...my issue happened after hitting backspace, the carriage flew all the way back rather than go back 1 space. From then, It also wouldn't lock into position at the start, I would push the carriage to the right using the arm lever (where I would start typing on the page) and it wouldn't stay in the position and it'd fly to the end of the page, carriage would fly left.. A visual of the same issue but on a different typewriter, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJnHeJ2NecedqsU

@@markarfur1 Got it. The video makes it a lot clearer, thanks. At first blush, I would call this an escapement issue. The escapement on a typewriter, like that of a watch (although watch escapements are smaller) are called as such because they open and close at intervals allowing mechanical motion to "escape" in measured increments. Press one key, get one space to the left. Press another key, get the same one space to the left. The carriage, when bound to the escapement, is controlled by the escapement's operation. If the escapement is malfunctioning, the carriage (assuming it's still connected to the mainspring) will be subject to the mainspring's action and will not move in measured increments. Did you say you were able to fix this yourself?

@@TheWriteStuffPro-DamonDiMarco thanks for the in-depth detail, I really appreciate your knowledge on this. I did manage to fix it, there was a spring that had disconnected from the plate (wrong term i'm sure) that nudges the escapement wheel after each backspace. It was tough and took me the whole day to figure out. But the fulfilment of fixing something mechanical like this is amazing. So thanks again for your resources.

@@markarfur1 I'm pleased to have helped in any small way. Sounds like you did the real work though. "...the fulfillment of fixing something mechanical like this is amazing." That is one of the best ways I've ever heard this articulated. Yes! Agreed. And congrats to you for having the curiosity and grit to see it through. Wishing you all my best.

I just purchased my first typewriter today a royal and this video not only showed me the basics but inadvertently showed me simple troubleshooting things when I kept screwing up!

Hey Damon, just having a weird full circle moment. I've recently bought a typewriter (the same as yours) and KZbind how to set one up as it's been a while since my grandmas lessons! Then I realised when watching your video you narrate my favourite acting audiobook that I use pretty much as my acting bible for work!

Oh, no! I just followed a few of those links, and... got a bunch of bad news! Well. I just recently learned that there are type faces that have names, more than one sans-serif type (my dream)... I got an Adler J4 for college in 1974, it had CUBIC type face, which I loved and seemed like the last word. I just found out that this had a name (!). I thought it was just something about ADLER! Now I'm going nuts shopping and spending to find a few others with this... and NOW I see that there are other type faces that are BETTER, and probably in practice not available. SIGH. Altessa? OCR-B (seen once in all my life)... Financial Gothic Heavy? There's more! I imagine going to a typewriter STORE in the day and selecting something like this with their expert help... but I didn't have such budget in the day, it would be like buying a car! In reality if I see a hundred typewriters three will be "Cursive", and the rest regular typewriter type more or less. Sans-serif is one in a few hundred, and it's always "Techno"!!!

It can be challenging, I hear you @leonardperalman4017. But it's worth the inquiry, I suppose. The journey being more important than the destination. Sounds like you're learning a lot and I'm very impressed by that, your curiosity and tenacity. Wishing you the best of luck finding your dream typeface.

@jaylt5136 From what I can see, self-awareness is one of those paths that never stops unwinding. We're on it from the moment we're born to the moment we pass to wherever we're going. That's a good thing. It means we have plenty of opportunities to grow. Wishing you all good things.
