Clicked this purely because this kind of character brings so much nuance and I LOVE to unpack the the reality they can bring to any story. Was a bit disappointed by the limitedness of the examples -- All men, all criminals of some stripe of kind, all living their adult lives. It would have been so much more joyous to look at this with more genre variation and variation in kind of character. Family members are often mentors. Women often have very complex psychological and emotional relationships to their mentors male or female. As kids grow older, darker sides of seemingly golden mentors may appear. And part of the game here is a constant question of if this guidance relationship has self-serving anterior motives from the mentor from the start. There's also great power in allowing a mentor to fall down in such a way that important lessons are learned from the last people we expect to be giving us teachable moments. Anyway, I'd love a more careful look a this kind of character across genre.

Hi @myragroenewegen5426. I appreciate your response. And of course it’s always impossible to please everyone when doing… well, anything. Are there any particular examples you’d propose to expand the kind of dark mentor you’re describing? Specific references from literature past or present are very welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting!
