thank you for the video! can you tell us what type of magnification you use? power and brand
@bristlyInnkeeper17 күн бұрын
You're welcome - I use a basic loupe with 15x magnification that I purchased for plant identification. 15 is good enough, but I sometimes strain my eyes, so I would recommend 20x or greater to make it easier.

@bristlyInnkeeper17 күн бұрын
What is the magnification of your loupe? I use a 15x and the wizards word in the stamp is difficult to see and I have to strain a bit. I would recommend 30x loupe if you can get one to see it easier. Green dot test is easier though, so I mostly just go that route. Good luck!

As a returning player (once again) after being gone for 13+ years, i hate backward curling foils. What do you thinknof recent secret lair rainbow foils vs non foil editions? Any insight there into process or where they come from? I'm thinking of upcoming marvel drop.
@bristlyInnkeeperАй бұрын
Great question! Yea most recent foils look like pringles and it’s really too bad since old foils seem to stay flat forever. I’ve only opened a few secret lairs but they also bend like the rest of US printed foils. I think Sectet Lairs are all US printed, but that may have just been my experience. On foil look, I think some of the rainbow foils from SL look very dark and flat but it really changes SL to SL. Ultimately it’s the question of, do you want the SL or not since you don’t really get a choice on quality. Good luck!

Is there a rule on prerelease foils and if they come from Japan or Usa?
@bristlyInnkeeperАй бұрын
Prerelease kits tend to be USA printed. Some may have other experiences, but every prerelease I’ve been to in the last 3 years was USA printed. Good question!

I went to the event at my LGS yesterday and it was great. We had a Theros Beyond Death Draft Booster and a Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Collector Booster. One of the saddest ways to detect that a modern MTG card is fake is that it's higher quality that real ones. Cards don't feel flimsy. Foils don't curl. Older cards are still pretty obvious. No one who has been playing for any length of time is going to be tricked by fakes of ABU/Four Horsemen cards. They can't seem to get the colors on the backs of the fakes quite right. I got an Arid Mesa that was almost bang on on the front side, but the back looked like day glow orange sherbet. I've never seen a fake that had a correct reverse side, and I own thousands at this point. I was comparing a real Alliances Force of Will to a fake one day. One thing to consider is that fakes are printed on modern equipment. The expansion symbol on the real Force was grainy and lower resolution due to being printed on machines of that era. The fake was CRISP with very high resolution. Someone inexperienced who was looking for Forces may have been fooled, thought the real was fake due to the lower resolution, or not even thought of something like that. There's no real catch-all way. I ordered two fake Drop of Honey from the same vendor, and they both looked radially different. Both _obviously_ fake too at least.
@bristlyInnkeeperАй бұрын
Yea sometimes it’s as easy as the back, and other times there are other tells. Just using a combination of authenticating tests is the best move.

@TheGorillahАй бұрын
Thanks for the video, it really helps to got an updated view on this - appreciate it. I recently got some troubles to declare cards 100 % legit. From the back they all seem legit - rosette and color variation excluded. Bend tests are positive as well. Most of the time my suspicion grows from different combinations of the following: • the black parts of the set-symbol or mana-symbol are blurry • font weight is different • light is barely coming through the cards • weight ist outside of 1,7-1,8 g - most of the time under • sometimes thick black layer in between • on some holostamps the "WIZARDS"-Sections are not shown or just barely shown If they are legit inspite all these, there is only the back to tell if cards are legit. What are your thoughts about rebacks? Everybody keeps telling me, these are only been done for old expensive cards. I think, if someone finds a cheap way to do them, they would aim for cards that are commonly been sold - which i think is more like 3-20 maybe 30 dollars.
@bristlyInnkeeperАй бұрын
Good question. Usually for double faced cards or a card where you can’t verify by green dot test, the blacks on the front are a good tell. The border, set symbol, and text that is black needs to be crisp. All of them. Fakes do a good job of one or two but never all of them. On the back, just look for greet dot and sharp line on H and double box like in the video. I’m not that worried about rebacking. To do it well and potentially destroy a high value card, the card you are backing needs to be of significant value and there will be tells if it is rebacked. Most cards we play with are not going to be rebacked. Good question and good luck!

as a new player, i am curious as to what people are talking about when they mention old foils. what was different about them? at what point did they change?
@bristlyInnkeeperАй бұрын
Old foils are basically just when the used to only foil the border. No art or text box foiling. They are especially vibrant and shiny. A tell tale is the shooting star they used to have. They call them ‘retro foils’ now,but they are not the same quality. I forget when they switched,but I think it was in the early 2000s. Good question!

Good question - It's not always indicative of a fake. Sometimes things like that may make you look twice at something which is then a good reason to check the green dot, borders, symbol, etc. But thinner text or smaller kerning is not indicative of a fake.

Depends on how you view quality, but I would say fakes tend to be consistent in their quality since the idea is to fool the receiver. You don't want someone looking too close at a smudge or double printing/ light printing or other type of misprint.

I bought a draft box of Wilds of Eldraine from Amazon and I felt they were really weird. The first thing that stuck me was how fragile the packs were. Breaking apart whilst opening them at the top. Felt strange and more plastic-y. Then I noticed the smell of the cards that smelled very strange. Like cleenex or very strong chemical smell. Then the cards felt a little rough on the sides, a little bit like sandpaper but very light, like a bit rough. I feel they are fake but I gotta buy one of those magnifiers to make sure I guess
@bristlyInnkeeper3 ай бұрын
If you bought a box and it was sealed with the Wizards branding wrap it's very unlikely that the cards are actually fake. Some packs open easily, others open with more force. And the card texture can feel weird, but it's only due to variation in factories and quality these days. I wouldn't worry too much about it especially if it had the Wizards branding wrap around the box. If I can answer anymore questions to help I am happy to. Thanks!

These kinds of things will always be a lock and key race. It happens. The trick isn't to make a perfect clone of the product, but make it close enough that the majority of players won't know to look closer for the minute differences. The fake I received in the video is very, very good unless you looked closer that extra 10%.

WRT the green dot test, some of my legitimate Caverns of Ixalan cards (straight from a booster box) are closer to the "fake" cards than the real ones. I think we're very close to Wizards having to put an NFC tag in legitimate rares/mythics to avoid fakes.
@bristlyInnkeeper3 ай бұрын
Yep, always use multiple forms of verification for best results!
@thatffxiguy3 ай бұрын
Several of the tests you list as not indicative are effective on very old cards that were all printed in the same facility, for example the 'four horsemen' sets all had very small print runs from a single printer, so all the rosette patterns and card stock tests should match up. These became ineffective later on, when WotC started outsourcing the printing process to multiple printers, introducing more variance in processes and materials.

That said the quality of reals is all over the place right now, alot of misprints, bad/missing holostamps or faded (end of print run) cards in packs. Some things I would have said were fake because of color etc in past are real now lol

I've had a couple cards get rejected on TCGplayer because they were fake, but I had no idea. I only recently started trying to look into this, is it worth it to get a loupe and scale and all if I'm not dealing with cards over like $50 or $100 or something?
@bristlyInnkeeper4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't worry about a scale, but each person has their own preference. I use a 5x-15x loupe and it works just fine for in-person verification. Everyone is different, but the tests I mention (green dot, hard/wobbly lines on back, and general black printing on face of card) are usually enough for me. Depending on your volume of cards, I would try to loupe anything over 5 dollars, but it's up to you. Most good proxies cost at least ~5 dollars to print per card, so most people will not be paying to proxy low value cards. Good questions!
