50 years! That's a long time to stay way. Oriental Bay is still the jewel in the city, especially since they started shipping in nice sand from down south somewhere. Other than that, the city council is hell bent on destroying this place. I had a ride on a CB50 back in the 70s. It was slow compared to our 2 strokes but I loved how it sounded and felt... like a real motorbike. Getting this Dream 50 decades later pretty much arose from that ride on the CB.

I studied all the aftermarket ignitions available to replace the Bosch in my '82 SS and found OEM Digital led the pack. I like the "no kick back" advance curve, the ability to set different advance curve easily by Bluetoothing your smartphone to the ECU and the quick and easy installation. For my '74 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport I had to go with Sachse only because OEM Digital don't offer a solution.

which exact ignition are you recommending then? [I'm assuming you sell them] I also have a '78 Darmah SD. . . The front cylinder works when it feels like it. Generally, it's fine until I stop at lights etc, then it drops out. The bike has got me home on 1 cylinder a few times, so there's that...

Hi Merlin. Brook was involved in the Sachse ignition for these bikes and he sells those on his website linked in the video description. Have a look there. He has them for different engines, e.g. the squarecase such as yours, and there's a form on every page where you can ask for any further details. I don't sell anything myself - just made the videos for my channel here. You might also want to check the first video in this series titled "My Ducati Bevel Eats Spark Plugs! - Ask Brook Henry - Rob's Garage". That could be related, but chances are you'll still want to install a modern ignition.

Elektronik Sachse ignition on my 250, 350 and 860 made a huge difference for all of them. Don't waste your time on the stock electronic ignitions. The points were just fine but adding a digital ignition to the singles gave me more ignition curve options, easier starting, better idle, more reliable.

When I was 16 I owned a 1977 Yamaha FS1-E, which regularly achieved 50+ mph (best was 57mph on the clock). 75kph equates to 46.6mph, so the Honda is certainly no quicker than my old Fizzy, and I suspect, probably a bit slower. It would be interesting to see how it performed if it was tuned.
@Ducati900SS
@Ducati900SS 5 күн бұрын
Yes this is not even up to scratch with all the tuned Mofas and Mokicks that teens had when I lived in Germany in the 70s. There were also the legal 50cc "Klein Kraft Rad" bikes that were unrestricted and could do those speeds legally but needed an expensive license to ride. Once I did about 70 on my 50cc Hercules Mokick that was only legal for 40.. that was exciting. That's why I put this Honda at about 3.5 horsepower. There's a video on YT of someone trying bigger carbs without any benefit, and pretty much all the other performance mods involve bigger heads and pistons, which I think sort of misses the point of having a 50cc bike. But there must be power hiding somewhere in this motor as it is. I don't think they'd claim 5.6hp if it couldn't do it. At this point I think the biggest speed boost would come from me losing about 40 pounds!

Do you sit down or stand up when using the lathe?
@Ducati900SS
@Ducati900SS 5 күн бұрын
hmm good question. I have a tall gas-lift stool that I use on both the lathe and the mill. I'd say I sit on it 90% of the time on the mill and 70% of the time on the lathe, even though the lathe is lower down on the bench. On the mill I need to see the work from the front/side, whereas on the lathe it's easy to view what I'm doing from above. And relating to this - I got a stool that only has legs and not wheels, because I didn't want it rolling around when I'm on it. I have got my eyes on a similar stool that has a back rest, but the one without it has the benefit of being usable from all sides without looking at it. So far, the cost of the backrest stool has made up my mind on that.

@@ThanasisThomas That's pretty much exactly what I've been doing. So long as you have a basic knack for engineering and a good sense of safety, you can certainly get into this just by watching KZbins and visiting some of the hobby engineering forums and Facebook groups. It is however a topic where everyone has differing opinions about the same things and it can be hard to filter out the right advice. I don't really do tutorials (because I'm a beginner) but check out the playlist of beginner videos by Blondihacks called Lathe Skills. I watched quite a few of those and also the ones on Mill Skills. I watched those and I think she does a good job on many of the basics. Just a comment - If you haven't yet bought a lathe, be aware there are two basic types, those called Sieg or Sieg-type lathes and the others which you can group as Optimum (as I have) and also Warco and Chester. In my opinion, these latter ones are a much better machine out of the box, and so I would avoid a Sieg type lathe at this price and size level unless you have no choice. Ask on any of my videos if you want any advice on a particular model you find. I check all questions and answer them.

I bought a small lathe which came with HSS tooling. My grinding was not up to par. Because of that I decide to go to night school to learn how to machine. There I could play with different radius inserts. There the teacher told me to go down in radius to get a better finish on a smal lathe. . Of course with the correct feed rate and depth of cut and rpm. Our small lathes just don't have the horsepower to handle a 0.8 nose radius. I now even use a 0.2 with great results.

Gawd - I've had so many heated discussions about carburetors. On my 79 900 SS I run 32mm Dellorto PHMs - I've known numerous who wanted 40mm and some who decided to split the difference with 36mm. Me, when I'm ridin' hard (usually raping a mountainside) "most" of the time the engine is running in mid-range and I have always thought the engine breathed better in that zone (eg: mid-range) with the 32s. Yes - I tried 40s once and once was enough - the 32s are ideal. Flat knacker 225kph

Very interesting discussion. I wasn't aware Laverda triples had a splash lubed crank! Another reason that good filtration is essential on a unit construction motorcycle engine with shared oil supply, and that is clutch wear particles, nasty stuff!! Something else about splash lubrication, two strokes!!! They survive on just a solution of oil and fuel, with oil at a very small ratio, it has always amazed me how that is even possible!!! Although the oil is always clean of course! I used to run my 900SS on Castrol GP50 back in the day, it seemed to do OK on that, I had reason to lift the heads and barrels on it and they looked perfect. It did 2 trips to the Bol in the early 80s, in some very hot weather, and all was good, although I only did about 6k miles on it during my ownership. I wouldn't run one on 50 grade now though. I have a 1975 750 Sport now, that's run on 20w50 mineral, bike spec of course, to Jasma. Also have a 450 SCR that I'm recommissioning to use next year, that's been in storage for 36 years!! Only one owner before me, I was going to fully restore it but I've realized that won't happen now, too many toys not enough time! It's good enough to use with some thorough cleaning, actually it's patina will give it a well used but proud look!! I'll run that on 20w50 too. I will be fitting Vee Twos filter screens to both though.

Good info. No mention of magnets..... they'll capture the ferrous bits that are most destructive. Even a magnet permanently affixed inside the sump would be good idea. I ride narrow-case singles and there is (or was) a screen on the market with magnets in it.The steel dipstick of the singles could also be magnetized. Off topic, the XS650 has two drain plugs, each with a massive magnet. Better still, a slot ground through the first few threads of each drain plug ensures that they act like thread-cleaning taps when being installed - very thoughtful those Japanese.

I looked at those magnets for mine a long time back and quickly decided against the one that hangs off the oil plug/stick thing. Those Neodymium magnets are a little fragile and the last thing I'd want flying around the innards would be pieces of magnet. I didn't closely examine the other one that sits on a plate under the oil filter, but it also hangs over a hole where it could cause trouble. That's as far as I got with the idea, but obviously plenty of people use them without issues. Thanks for the comment.

Check the voltage to the ignition unit, aging Ducati electrics are notorious. Check float height and needle valve seating. As regards ht voltage, there is no such thing as too much!! Fuel can be an issue now in the UK with the new ethanol blend sh1t, this can cause rich running at low speed, it could be the ethanol separating out and lying in the bottom of the tank, so if only used occasionally, it could be trying to run a high ethanol mix, so very rich. Use an ehthanol shield product to prevent this. And give it some stick!!!! I remember caning my 79 900SS back from the bol in the 80s at 100 to 120 for hours on end, they love it!

Would have been way more time consuming, way messier and way more inconvenient to do the same with a grease pump assuming that is what you are referring to. Inconvenient because, as mentioned in the video, there is no simple way to seal up the multiple holes, and if reassembled, then the issue becomes one of dealing within only one piston coming out in the pair. And lastly, one has to have a decent pump, which mine is not. But if you have something to show this, I'll be keen to see it 😀

Have seen this problem often, both Suzuki and Ducati told us at service schools (mid 2000's) that 98 ULP fuels were denser and designed for loop injection systems(oxygen sensor in exhaust) All bikes without this much happier on 95 or even 91. This was a problem with Gixxers and Ducatis we serviced killing iridium plugs at 1500 km if you were lucky. All my classic bikes both 2 and 4 stroke are happy on 91/95 but the race bikes do miss avgas so have had to switch to Methanol for them. Have had dramas with the newer dyna coils (China?) but these days the scariest thing is the fake NGK and ND plugs on-line, do not buy plugs online, reputable shops only.

Too much fuel and maybe some oil. Find a shop with a dyno that can put an exhaust analyzer in the exhaust and determine what the mixture under load is at all throttle openings. Fouled plugs usually indicate richness or oil going to the guides or up the rings. With those big carbies on there I'll bet they're running rich somewhere in the range. "It was just rebuilt by a reputable shop....." Means nothing! Unless you personally, confirmed that the cylinders are straight and perpendicular to the cases and were properly honed to match the ring material, and unless you assembled the heads and checked the guide-to-valve clearance and ensured that the proper guide seals were installed, all bets are off. Trust no one! Some shops have coil test devices (We had one at our shop). These are very handy for identifying weak coils. B7HS is a resister plug, I believe. If it's fouling a 7, put a 6 in it and do periodic plug checks.
