As a Canadian in SW Ontario, no one under 40 watches the CFL. Its considered a minor league that old fogies watch. NFL has been pushed down our throats from a young age. Expansion cant be in cities near the U.S. border. Cities like Sasktoon, Sudbury, Halifax have a chance. London, no way. People would rather drive to U.S.
@harleyrandygreen359717 сағат бұрын
The reason why the Maritimes have no interest is there's no team. I know that Halifax has been wanting a team for quite some time, but it'll keep getting strained if the CFL keeps passing Nova Scotia over. It needs 10 teams. Moncton is not the answer, Quebec City couldn't hold onto its NHL franchise, and the American cities of Boise, Spokane, and Fargo would just be a mess. Then you throw Buffalo into the mix and you start really reaching. Buffalo is a rabid fanbase for their Bills and with the Sabres a CFL franchise will always be third fiddle. After the CFL tried to expand into the United States it proved to be a huge failure. The only U.S. team to survivie and win a Grey Cup were the Baltimore Stallions (CFLers) moved to Montreal and became the new Alouettes after the league decided to pull from the U.S. Plus, I thought it was interesting that the Stamps were actually thinking about moving to San Antonio. The U.S. is a non starter for the CFL and should focus solely on Canada and still try to set their sights on Halifax and maybe Saskatoon as well.

It amazes me that the league has not made a bigger effort to do market testing in London or Kitchener-Waterloo yet. You have two of Canada’s fastest-growing cities, both with metro area populations of almost 600k each, both with good household income numbers, tons of sponsors, and absolutely no competing professional sports teams. Both have Ontario Rugby Football Union history and have stadiums that could be upgraded to CFL standards. I know a lot of CFL fans think Ontario has too many teams, but Southwestern Ontario has almost 2M people with no professional sports teams to call their own! Bring back the Lords and the Dutchmen!

Ppl of Halifax. There are 450,000 of you. If everyone could chip in $100 bucks you’d have $45,000,000 down payment and can build a $300,000,000 and pay it off $100 per year in 7 years time. Somebody make the go fund me, you could all own the team, vote for presidents, vote for GM and head coach. Use the profits of the team to pay off property taxes and community sports and stuff

Expansion is fine but ownership is important...you need WEALTHY people who are committed not someone scratching together a group of kinda rich guys...after strong ownership is found...if you go to the US the team should be in a state that borders Canada nothing more southern...and they must agree to the Canadian player rules...no all American player teams allowed...a level playing field needs to be kept...I'd love to see the same amount of teams in the east and west no matter the number...10 -12 something you can split evenly

I can see teams in Quebec, Halifax and London, but of course getting a 24k stadium is the difficult part. The NFL is so strong in the US, not sure if this would work. Maybe Portland OR with 600k+ population, but they of course have deep roots in NCAA football

Expansion for sure! In my opinion, the CFL needs a team in the Maritime Provinces, specifically Halifax, Nova Scotia. A 25,000 seat stadium located near the downtown (possibly on the Dartmouth side and next to the river), i.e. a destination type of situation would be ideal IMO. It's my belief that the entire population of the Maritime provinces would be the target-market for the team. Affordable season tickets initially for building a fan base and inexpensive (cheap) tickets for kids under 14, would help fill the stadium with current and future fans. Yes, I DID hear the statistics cited in this video, but the smaller available percentages of people living in the areas would help to build the fan base I'm referring to. It's happened in many many other football cities (Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego, Cincinnati, New Orleans, etc). I don't feel that expansion into the US would be a good move, as it was tried before but didn't succeed.

I think if the Maritimes get a team, Halifax and Moncton will more or less share it. Kinda like how St. Paul and Minneapolis share Minnesota's teams. Whether its Moncton or Halifax doesn't matter I think the Maritimes will unite under it.

Buffalo is a small metro that is saturated in the fall with Bills, Sabres, and UB football. Plus, a big chunk of the Bills' fanbase is in St. Catharine's; no way the Ti-Cats would allow a market with a Southern Ontario footprint to potebtially cannibalize their fanbase.

Only Quebec City is viable in Canada and I don't think that ANY franchise in the USA would work because of the import/non-import player rules. Having said that, if I had to chose US locations, I think Portland, Oregon, Hartford, Connecticut and Baltimore, Maryland would be the most ideal. Baltimore still has tonnes of CFL fans from the days of the Baltimore Stallions.
@KOZMOGRAFX3 күн бұрын
I love the CFL, and the league has always somehow managed to survive the bleeding and concerns about viability... precariously... but as time goes on, and crowds shrink, I'm really getting worried about the future. It would be awesome if Halifax or QC joined as #10, but unless someone with really deep pockets steps up to make it finally happen, I think ONE POSSIBLE OPTION is to change the name to "3FL" and invite a few American cities back in. Keep the rules and field size intact. Sure, losing the C is a tough compromise, but by naming the league after the distinctive 3 downs, it could make it a lot more welcoming to American fans while losing none of the flavour. Anchorage, Spokane, Grand Rapids. And again, if some incredibly wealthy benefactor would be willing to fund decent 25k stadiums in Victoria, Saskatoon, and Halifax, it could be a massive catalyst. And when I watch the NFL, the tiny field makes it look like they play in a gymnasium... or a basement. ;p

Quebec City has 800,000 people in the Metro area and earn some of the highest salaries in the province. They regularly attract 12,000-14,000 for the Laval University Rouge & Or CIAU games, over 20,000 with added seating when they face off against the University of Montreal Carabins. Quebec has everything the CFL needs except for a viable stadium. If the new Commissioner has any connections in French Quebec, he can get this done.

As a Baltimorean, we kind of forced ourselves to be happy with the CFL... we were very successful, but it just wasn't the NFL. Buffalo is a no-go. The smaller cities in the northern plains, Rockies, and Pac NW ... maybe. NFL has stayed away from Canada out of respect, but if tomorrow the NFL decided to place expansion teams in Vancouver and Toronto, that would be the end of the CFL...

How can you say it’s been storms since 1958???? I myself listened to the Grey Cup game in 1954 (one of the most exciting ever) and that was the 42nd Grey Cup game. The first one was in 1909! The league has been going that long. Perhaps it has only been called the CFL for a shorter time but it’s the same league!

I’m an American living in Dallas, Texas. I’m a New England Patriots fan. I heard someone say an NFL team in Toronto was a remote possibility. I don’t want that to happen. Canadians have a great thing going with the CFL and I don’t want that harmed or diminished in any way. EDIT: I rarely watch the CFL, but when I do I root for Calgary because they use the same logo as my college team, the Southern Methodist University Mustangs.

This was years ago, but I read an article about how Canadians are more fans of the NFL than the CFL. However, the vast majority of Canadians are against an NFL team in Toronto if it was going to harm the Argos, which would certainly harm the CFL as a whole.

This video feels like it was made entirely by ChatGPT. The expansion section was terrible-you know the CFL will never go back to the USA, and you also know Saskatoon will never get a team. As a European who has seen NFL and CFL games, I can tell you that the CFL is the much better product. The NFL is so over-commercialized, like the top 5 football (soccer) leagues in Europe or the Champions League, that there are practically only tourists and fashion fans in the stadium. Very many here are turning away from such clubs/leagues and going to watch lower class, local or neighborhood matches just for the love of the game.

Having followed the CFL for more than 60 years since I was a kid, they have tried to expand to Halifax for 50 of those years in 1975. They actually had a general manager named and there was a supposed ownership group, but it fell apart. I think a franchise would be good in Halifax, but I don’t think they are serious. You keep hearing about different ownership groups, but nobody is seriously prepared to build a CFL sized stadium. That’s why I say Halifax is not serious.
