I wonder what desk jockey was sitting around that thought..." You know what a battle grade generator needs...electronic touch screen and all the sensitive electronics necessary to run it. And while we're at it, let's make it as reflective as a mirror."

What is even better are the clowns that don't even have a desk talking about things they know nothing of. You speak as though somebody is humping this on the front line.

The modern battlefield is full of electronics. This is simple compared to what is out there in tactical vehicles, radios, and observations systems now. Even grunts are equipped with tablets & drones.

All waiting for that big EMP to render them useless. Until there is a source of supply for this controller, I'm staying away from these MEPs. I think an MEP-803a is the sweet spot. The Hz regulation isn't as good, but they are easy to repair and reliable as all get out.
@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 4 ай бұрын
@@paulstavrides9785 the control box is just as resistant as anything else in any generator. Any wire will absorb EMP if it's within range. These newer units are no worse off than the older style in that sense. Tons of the DCS are out there & are all interchangeable between models. 5-60kw. Everything has a positive and negative.

Nice video, a buddy of mine here in Canada is an industrial electrician and lives out in the boonies , has a bit of solar and is till connected to the grid, he bought something similar to yours , was a former CAF unit, I think 12 or 14 k unit, he bought it just pre covid and i think he payed around $3000 for it, not sure, only spent a few hundred to get it running right, basically did the same as you did and load tested it himself , our winters here in Manitoba get very cold plus allot of windchill on top of the very low temps, like North Dakota -30 is a regular occurrence here ,his power goes out a couple of times a winter and its wired into his main house/shop panel and has automatically kicked in without issues so far and that is 4 winters already, he did get an AUX diesel tank for it, 30 gallons on top what it came with, he said the most it ever ran continuously was 10.5 hours and used 11 to 12 gallons , thats nice to have such decent back up for your home, 👍 i just have one of the small Honda generators, my place is small and have only used it 3 times in 6 yrs, great video 😎

The military generators are a big step above most. They can run continuously unlike most gasoline units, that should be shut down after 6-8 hours to cool.

This is so cool! I want one now so I can charge our 13kw bank of batteries hooked to our solar system. We have 17kw of panels but a few cloudy days would deplete that pretty quick.
@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 3 ай бұрын
This would be a bit overkill for that. I'd consider something smaller to conserve on fuel and charge the batteries a bit slower. Like an MEP 802A. You can get a kit that remotely controls it as well. Much less fuel consumption & cheaper to buy/maintain. most people think they need a 10KW military generator when they don't.

Suggestion on the radiator , guessing the damage is area is copper / brass ? I would clean the outside & inside - so that you can silver solder the damaged tubing , maybe even pinch off the open tubing before soldering .

Plastic & aluminum is what it looked like to me. I don't really have time to go through all the effort to make a repair that may work. Cheaper in the long run to just replace it with a new one. I have a lot of projects, a business, and a full time job... on top of 4 kids. A few hundred on a radiator to not worry about it again is well worth it.

Great service as a u tuber, highly educational., learning a lot. Planning to get back into citrus again and the military gens seem to be the way to go..cost, etc. My question for you how hard, after watching would it have been to totally remove all or most of ths sheet metal surrounding the generator.
@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 4 ай бұрын
A lot of the unit is attached to the panels. They are not designed to have all the panels removed for it to be worked on unless you are also removing components like the coolant system, controls, so on.

If the radiator turns out to be too expensive GM used to have a aluminum radiator repair kit in a tin. It had some cleaner and what was like sticks of P-tex.

Somebody dropped or poked the radiator. Damage seems to be in a good spot to crimp off the damaged row and seal it shut. Soldered connections in high vibration environments... Some branches never learn.

Just curious, I am going to be building a house in the next few months and at this point I am thinking of off grid solar. Is there one of these generators that you would recommend as back up? I think a 5k would be sufficient but 10k might be ok as well. I'm fairly good with diesel engines, etc. So basic repairs and maintenance would not be an issue for me.
@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 4 ай бұрын
The engine is the easy part. Understanding the electrical side & how it works is what takes time. Figure out the size you need & go from there. Military generators are a good choice as they generally produce very clean power, use a fair amount of fuel, and once properly repaired, go a while without issues when used properly.

@CallMeColtLLC
@CallMeColtLLC 4 ай бұрын
Not this model. I have a few military generators for sale that I have refrerbished, but once they are sold, I won't be doing anymore. People seem to spend more at the auction sites like GovPlanet than with people who rebuild them because they think we are ripping them off. So, I'm just going to deal with parts & kits only.
