@CalebA-sv2kw It was too great of a moment not to catch on film. There was something so peaceful about the breeze and hearing that chain slap against the signal ladder and the creaking of the metal doors on the old rusty structures. It was making me feel like all of the history for that location was in fact whispering to me. I love that area so much and it's rich history, I think you get it. Thank you so much Caleb! 😎🤝

Hello Mike!! Thank you for coming. Now we're all friends here with no judgement, now start at the beginning 🤣. I started in November 1973 when I met a friend in high school, Ray in Rosemead CA. He was 2 years older and drove so he took me all over to railfan over the weekends. Our usual hangout was just outside LA Union Station where we would watch all the Amtrak trains arriving and departing. We made friends with other railfans there. It was there were I decided to take a "quick" break from college and work a summer at Amtrak. 38 Summers later, I decided to retire from Amtrak. Keep your amazing videos coming my friend!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

@P30CH 🤣🤣🤣 I love it!!! 💪💪 Sounds like a dream come true! That is so awesome. I wanted to be an engineer ever since I can remember, I used to watch the trains every chance I could and when we drove through the Cajon Pass (which was daily at one point as a kid) I would day dream of being the guy in the cab of the loco driving through all of that beautiful countryside. That obviously never did end up being my path, however I never lost my love for the trains. Especially ones in the Cajon Pass. 😆 I still day dream that I am the dude in the cab, and still also of one day building a model train layout. Perhaps one of the Cajon Pass! 😉

@@FJDad777 Same boat different paddle i also dreamed of working the rails loved trains since i was a child, used to sneak out the house and walk 3/4 mile down my street which ended at the, what was then the Santa Fe mainline into the San Bernardino rail yard that runs along the 215. Now and then a train would be tied down and i would just go and touch a box car and i was thrilled. Later on when i got a bike i would ride down to the old train station and sit there in the back where the metrolink now runs through and just watch trains for hours. Then when they first opened up Silverwood lake i remember seeing them run along side 138 when i would go with my dad fishing. I did have a model train layout on a 1/2" 4'x8" plywood board. I had a DDA40X and Burlington Northern SD-9 and a Santa FE (blue) GP-35 (was a EMD man even before i knew it hahaha) about 30 cars to go along with it. So i was running manifest back in the day. Wonderful catch Mike thanks as always for keeping me young . Be careful out there brother.

@@FJDad777 Oh man, me too. After railfanning for awhile I would have loved being an engineer. Unfortunately I'm colorblind. So instead of running trains, I ran train stations. I worked for years as the ticketing manager for LA Union Station and San Diego Station and all the stations in between Santa Barbara-San Diego. But I did get a chance to be engineer one time. It was on Amtrak's Desert Wind. The train ran SLC thru Vegas to LA. I got on in Vegas. The conductor was a good friend of mine. And during our stop at Barstow, he asked if I wanted to ride the cab. Didn't need to ask me twice. I climbed up, met both the engineer and assistant engineer. Just before we highballed BAR, the engineer said here have a seat, the engineers seat. I told him thanks but I'm colorblind. He said no problem, just call out the signal and we'll confirm it. We took off, running at 80 MPH. Semi-smooth stop at Victorville, didn't knock any passengers down LOL. Did a running air-test at Summit and ran down Cajon on dynamic and train brakes. I got off at San Bernardino. And amazingly I called out the signals correctly. I thought I died and went to heaven. 🪽🚂

@CalebA-sv2kw such an awesome story Caleb! Thank you for chiming in on this fun thread. I enjoyed reading your train story 😁 I did have an HO layout on a 4x4 sheet of plywood too as a kid. I would lay there for hours and watch the trains go round and round. Great stuff.... the good ol' days.

Perfect lighting my friend, another awesome one 👍🏼!! About the deer, I agree with one of the comments. It could be a clever cover up for a another murder committed up or downline 🤣. But seriously, it is traumatic for the train crew when they hit a car/truck and especially with kids involved. Or the obvious suicide. The crew can request relief from running the train and wait for a relief crew. Crew can take 3 days off and counseling if needed.

@@FJDad777 Engineer friends of mine told me that every run there would be near misses. It's a call the engineer has to make, whether they will get out of the way or not. If they "plug" the train (emergency application of all train brakes) there is a big risk of train truck damage with flat wheels, blown cylinders etc... plus the time to recharge the train with air 15-30 min. I was riding the cab of a northbound San Diego-LA train doing 80 MPH thru Carlsbad. Over the rise there was a bicyclist with his bike on his shoulder walking the rails same direction as the train. Engineer just laid on that horn. Kid must have earphones on because he would not get out of the way. Engineer plugged the train. The last second the kid looks back dives off. The tracks are on a rise there so the kid took a mean tumble with his bike. Finally got the train stopped and the conductor took a walk to find the kid. EMS was called. Not sure how bad he was hurt. 🚴🏼🚂

@FJDad777 3 күн бұрын
@P30CH Wow! I did not realize near misses would be that frequent. It's probably because sadly, most lack enough common sense to stay at a safe distance. I would say that if that kid survived, even if he was injured, he was damn lucky. Thank you so much for sharing some of your amazing stories from the rails with me today brother. Nice catches dad i think you are right about the deer. The term "deer in the headlights" is used because deer's eyes are designed for low light so they can see very well at night in the dark. So when headlights, either from a car or in this case a +400.000 lbs. locomotive hits the deer's eyes it takes a few moments to adjust and the deer won't move because it doesn't no where to run to. So. if I may play forensic investigator here i think the deer encountered a west bound train and was hit head on you can see its broken front leg ahead of it on the track it went down and under the train quickly because the body isn't far away from the leg. OR.... it was killed elsewhere and dumped on the tracks to cover up the original crime now i have gotten too CSI (not funny i know).
@FJDad777
@FJDad777 4 күн бұрын
@CalebA-sv2kw a great assessment of what more than likely occurred. Total bummer for the deer, I am sure that the train crew was pretty bummed out too I'd bet. I never even considered the fact that maybe it could have been dumped on the tracks! That's totally plausible. 🤔 Thank you Caleb!

Digging your railroad tie view of the passing train! Your drone shots remind me of a very detailed train layout. Looks amazing! It’s wonderful to spend time with other rail enthusiasts. Such incredible scenery. Breathtaking views. We had two Boston Terriers, Sam and Nikki. Both passed on some years ago. Wonderful life long friends.
