I sense that Robert's SMILES had some special meaning to E.N. In all of the photographs I've yet seen of E.N. I get the impression that he never let-go and laughed when younger. Can any envision E.N. ever doing so?

I didnt realize there is possibly a second cat early on. He seemed amazed that the cat likes it. I wish we had video of that one too. Thats awesome moment. Starts about 00:26. I didnt notice it the first few times. He turns to look in amazement at his listener several times...then he talks quietly to it. Thats a hoot in a half

Big chops, and an evocative moment or two, but overall Hambourg always seems more occupied with projecting an aura of "the virtuoso" rather than really interpreting the music. The indulgent waywardness of his playing to me seems to apotheosize the drawbacks of the Grand Manner and why it went out of taste. His playing is a discredit to his more artful Leschetizkyan contemporaries Paderewski, Friedman, and Moiseiwitsch. Compared to Friedman's liberties, Hambourg's seem slapdash, trivializing, and just plain sloppy.

I have just listened to Rubinstein's recording of this piece, and this performance seems faster and more passionate. I watched KZbin videos of young pianists play this, like Daniil Trifonov (sweating profusely). How did Rubinstein do it at his age? Even for those who doubt it is him playing, there are plenty of videos of live performances from his old age, many of which his hands are visible. Now with KZbin, we can see many more of these than were possible at the time, so his career achievement into old age seems even more remarkable now with the passage of time. He continued to play the big pieces right up till the end of his career.

And THIS is why Horowitz is so revered as a player. The excitement of this performance is off the scale. Yes - the sound is pretty bad and they almost didn't get tot the end together but WOW. Nobody has played like that since. The closest I've ever come is Argerich/Pappano in Japan in 2001. I must have about 10 pirated Horowitz Tchaikovsky 1's from this period but this is near the top (personally I think the 1953 Szell is slightly better, but still so exciting). Imagine being in the audience listening to this incredible man. I only heard him live once and was totally blown away by the sound
