My main logic for WD-40 is that it doesn't evaporate, and the blade won't start rusting while I'm sanding. I have seen people use 3 in 1 oil and it doesn't make much sense to me.

I don't expect a response to this comment since the video is 4 years old now but is it best to weld around the billet making sure there's no way any oxygen can get in-between the plates? Or is it only the best way when you have properly faced plates, I don't have a very good sander so my plates are never perfectly fitting together but with clamps I can usually close any gaps left over. I'm curious because in theory if there's no gaps between the plates in the stack then even just fusing the plates together is a good idea. Actually probably the best way to do it since you're not adding/mixing metals with the weld. I might have just answered my question, but thanks!!

it alwas bugs me when the components are pre-welded together, that destroys the pattern where the weld penetrates to and wastes materials. it is more work to forge weld them when they are not contained but i think the end result will be better.

Jason, what do you think the best way to do that is? I read old books now, I have been watching KZbin with a consistent goal of pursuing new techniques and tips, I invest in Kyle Royers online classes, I invest in my equipment, I am saving to take a class, and I build new tools and practice in my shop weekly leaving enough time in my schedule for some rest. What do I do next?

I love 80CRV2. Thank you for recommending it in a text years ago. I love it. I forge it regularly and know it is solid steel. I'd say it is also relative!y expensive, that's why manufacturers use steels like 1075. I can make a great blade out of some spring steel I've done the work to figure out. So 80 CRV2 is excellent all around but other steel may work great by aplication.

I was supposed to die from an incurable condition that I cured myself because of studied certain aspects of the human body and pharmaceutical research in my career. I came up with a hypothesis that almost every single PhD that I worked with said yeah that's what we're finding out that's what I believe so I applied my knowledge and with a little luck I cured myself. I'm advocated for my life and it worked and I'm very grateful. Now to pay the universe back I am going to Vietnam to live whatever's left with my lifetime and I've always wanted to help the children of Vietnam there are a lot of orphanages and a lot of orphan children and I decided I'm going to spend 75% of any money I have left out of my guaranteed income on feeding these kids and repairing their facilities and even working with non orphan poor farmers and supplying with them with things that are out of their reach and that would make their lives so much better. I love the Vietnamese people they're amazing the resilient they love their country they love their fellow Vietnamese. That's why they won the war they're absolutely unwavering in their devotion to each other. It's really an amazing thing when you get to experience that. And I want to make a difference and try and give back a little bit hopefully a lot but I don't know how much time I have left I'm not going to die from my incurable condition though because I proved them wrong. I would love to be able to come and learn what I can about forging before I go to Vietnam so I can concentrate my free time on making high quality farming tools. They rely on trying to find the cheapest tools they can but they always end up being crappy and don't last very long but it gets them to the next season or the next harvest. So I thought that it would be a good idea to learn that even if I can only help a handful of farmers it'll make a difference in some of their lives if they can have a good machete they rely a lot on machetes they do all kinds of work these women can wield the machete like you wouldn't believe it scares the living hell out of me lol. They built houses with just using a machete they build them out of bamboo and they're really amazing structures and the only thing they need is their curved machete maybe a shovel and a small pointy knife for drilling holes. I need to learn the basics of forging very quickly so when I get there I can start applying and learning it more. I'm going to have a full play cuz I also grow medicinal mushrooms that can help these people a great deal as well and I'm going to teach some farmers how to do this as well if anybody that reads this we're in my situation and I have less than a year to learn whatever I can about forging what would you do what resources would you use to train get as much knowledge and experience as you can in such a short time? I mean I can make anything on machinist machines but I need to learn how to forge to begin with I'm going to buy a male and a lathe when I get there and I can make anything else that I need. For example a lot of the girls for extra money after they're done with their 15 hours a day in the field they will harvest cinnamon bark and it goes through this whole processing thing I have already designed on CAD a machine to do this and I know for an absolute fact it's going to work stellarly so I'm going to try and build these machines there too I'll build one and prove that it works and then I'll be probably obligated to a hundred people to build other ones lol. You know for the past couple decades I've been learning how to machine just for the sake of learning and I didn't know why and I think this has something to do with it I love to make gears and then once I realized I can make gears really good I applied them to machines that I had ideas for and I learned how to operate a metal lathe manually and I got really really really good and then I got tired of using other people's plans for building machines so I taught myself how to design and CAD and I got really really really good so I think this is all predestined to happen if you believe in such nonsense lol I learned all this stuff and it's all tying together but I need to step back into the 17th century and learn how to forge that will also serve my purpose as well. I made moonshine for 30 years I don't really drink lol That's a contradiction right there but I need a lot of green alcohol for the medicines I make with my mushrooms My whole life has been like this everything fits together. You don't ever know what a great feeling is until you realize you save someone's life with alternate medicine maybe that's why I got sick too because what I had would have ended in small cell lung cancer but as soon as the cells were developing they were destroyed by my method my treatment so my whole life has been this puzzle of things fitting together all for this opportunity to go live in Vietnam for the rest of my life and help others it's going to be the biggest joy of my life. I've been here in a small city in the Midwest and all I can really do here is drive people to their appointments homeless people and try and get them into shelters and things like that which is gratifying but there's so much more work to be done. Even if 1% of us were to do this type of thing this planet would be a wonderful place to live anyway if anybody's got any ideas if they could make it through my wall of text let me know where I should start

I agree that good, high quality steel isn't expensive... if you're American. Steel costs an arm and a leg to get up here to Canada from the US and there are almost no actual Canadian steel retailers that actually ship from Canada.

I was chosen for a free bladesmithing course for veterans through a local university with a master bladesmither. They were only choosing eight candiates, I've always watched the videos on KZbin so I'm here to see what exactly fhe course will entail. I'm a female but, I've always like working with my hands my very frist job was as a generator mechanic in the military. 😅 Kind of excited to learn this trade after only watching on KZbin.

Concerning the hammering out process, would it at all speed things up to have a partner holding the metal when hot while you draw it out with a considerably larger hammer?
